'It's ok to not be ok': Humboldt Broncos survivor opens up on mental health

On April 6, 2018, Canadians across the country were heartbroken to hear of the devastating Humboldt Broncos bus crash, which took the lives of 16 members of the Junior A hockey team and injured 13 others.
Tyler Smith was among the survivors. He suffered eight different injuries, went through two surgeries and spent 13 days in hospital. But for Tyler, the physical injuries will never compare to the mental health struggles he continues to face each and every day as a result of that horrific day.
Two years after the accident that changed his life forever, Tyler is opening up about his story in an effort to let other men who might be suffering know that it’s ok to not be ok: “My overall message would be to realize that you’re not ok and if you’re not ok, do something about it. I think a lot of people just suffer in silence but being able to open up takes a lot of courage.”

Not knowing what happened that day can either be a curse or a blessing. You can never replace the family you lost, but you can help keep their names alive just by lacing up the skates. To watch the hockey community come together again to show support was beautiful. Let's hope the fallen are up there playing hockey together ❤

I just watched Amazing Race Canada and I am was overcome with emotion, I cried watching the final episode. I watched Ty and Kat win the Race and the other 2 Teams were very inspirational, as well. Thank you for sharing your story Ty Smith. My prayers are with the Humboldt Team players; everyone who lost their lives and the lives of all the family members affected. You know firsthand who each of the players were and thank you for running the Amazing Race Canada and sharing their life and journey with others. Many families were deeply affected and I pray that you know how much all Canadians across Canada, care for the community of Humboldt Team and Community. May you know my prayers are with your community today. From Edmonton, Alberta Canada-Thank you Ty and Kat and Congratulations on winning the Race. You did not win this race alone. You won it for your community and for the entire Humboldt team. I truly believe in my heart, that all 16 team members were helping you both, finish this race. Thank you Ty Smith and Kat for your commitment to this race and for uplifting the families of the Humboldt Community :) We are all proud of you both! From Edmonton, Alberta, Canada=Thank you Ty and Kat :)

I'm American still playing hockey in my late 50's because it truly is the greatest game on earth. This tragedy hit home to all those in the world of hockey at every level. We keep a hockey stick by the front door for the boys just in case.... Godspeed to those survivors and rest in peace to those who were lost.

Great message buddy. I myself played in the OHL and Jr.A and was affected by this absolutley heart breaking tradgey. I struggle with mental health, the depression and the anxiety of certain situations and the best thing you can do is open up and talk about it, and be there to support others and care for others as well. You're not weak to show weakness, whether you're a guy or not or a hockey player or not man, we are human beings and being real and doing the best to be the best person you can be is important. The hard times are very tough, they're very dark and the thoughts and emotions and feelings can be very painful.. but you're not a lone. Love yourself, do more, be better. Hope you find happiness and do good things in life bud.

Still tear up when thinking of the tragedy that unfolded. It will never be forgotten for as long as I live, and I’m sure the whole hockey community would say the same thing. I wish well to the survivors and all that were affected by this horrific event. Rest In Peace to those who did not survive. #Humboldtstrong

I can even begin to remotely fathom what your experience was like. I can only have empathy and compassion. I can however relate to the mental health issues you are facing. I suffer from extreme depression, anxiety, ADHD and PTSD. These issues have had me near death multiple times in my life. I struggle even on the good days to be a functioning human in society. You are absolutely right to say it's ok to not be ok! Because some days you just aren't ok no matter what you or others do to alleviate the turmoil inside. Thank you for speaking up and doing what you can to help break the stigma against mental health issues. We stand with you and you are not alone. I have nothing but respect and love for you and your struggles. Stand strong when can and rest when you can't. We got your back.

"Touch people, give them a sense of hope" bravely, with courage and honesty. Tyler, you most certainly are accomplishing this and are an inspiration to many. Your words remind me of concern for Kaleb and Ryan being in the spotlight a bit too soon even if that's what they wanted. All of you can be ambassadors for traumatic stress recovery when you are ready. The fans need to give you the space and time to do it.

Over 60 years the DSM handbook’s been around and we’re still waiting for a reliable test for “chemical imbalance” The more I think about it, the more I believe that mental health awareness is more a marketing plan than anything else.
