"It's Okay To Go" is a project documenting those that have chosen to leave organized religion and the challenges we faced when we decided to go. Did we make the right choice to leave our religions behind? Who are we without our former religions? What happened to our relationships with friends, family and our community when we decided to go? Leaving organized religion is a unique experience for everyone, but there's one powerful feeling we all share: "it's okay to go."

He's dammed but not a saint. These people have never been born again Christians in the first place because true Christians can not become "unsaved"! People receive the HOLY SPIRIT as soon as they thankfully accept JESUS CHRIST'S ultimate sin sacrifice on the cross and HIS resurrection on the 3rd day = being born again www.gotquestions.org/born-again.html

Balls Murphy same here. I didn't get out of that insanity until I moved out at 19. It haunted me for a while after. Luckily my parents didn't take all that "disfellowshipping" stuff too seriously and we have a decent relationship now. To anyone involved in the utterly nonsensical fantasy that religion requires you to believe in, just remember, science and reason have advanced our culture way beyond whatever small advances religion may have provided when humans were still in the bronze age and had to make up stories to make sense of their world. The sooner we put that in our past, the sooner we will be able to become a more understanding and intelligent species.

I have a friend that recently converted to evangelical, it took less that six months for his family to stop talking to him. He is also ready to end his marriage because his wife won’t convert with him. To think that this happened because he heard a youtube video mention if he didn’t give his life to Jesus he would burn for all of eternity, thats it thats all it took to flip his lid. I wish I could have my friend back. 😥

I don’t know how the situation evolved, but it sounds like your friend was facing a time of deep personal crisis and maybe a lot of fear, and guilt, and regrets. That’s when abusive religion gets you.. when you’re vulnerable. I hope your friend is doing better, and I hope they realized the made up teachings of a fictional deity is not worth losing good friends and family.

Hi Ben. In case you ever read this, I'm a current Lutheran in Wisconsin (even if I'm Seahawks fan). Even though my faith is (to me) the most important and most beautiful part of my life, I have a lot of respect for you, your experience with Christianity, and your decision to leave it. I don't believe the Christian faith is something you should ever be forced into or forced to remain a part of. The feeling of compulsion and pressure in any faith, or any viewpoint for that matter, is terrible and emotionally burdensome. If anyone does become a Christian, I hope it is because the love of God works in that individual's heart, and never because they feel like they need to conform to the people around them. Hate, fear, and pressure are powerful forces, but love conquers them all. I hope that anyone reading this comment knows that I love them, even if I don't know them. Regardless of who your you are, your background, or your religious beliefs, I love you. I may not agree with you on religious matters, but you are still a human being that I love and respect with my whole heart. In spite of religion, politics, and any other obstacle, love conquers all =)

Mad respect for all people who leave organized religion. Practicing religion individually and questioning what you believe in is always fine (just like not believing in any god is fine) but when hierarchies get established... gaslighting and manipulation are granted. I'd like to say I still believe in god, but I cannot accept that a loving, omnipotent entity would allow so much cruelty and greed in the world.

Religion never brings life. It is based on rules, regulations, and dogmas. What makes the difference is having a relationship. This is what a Christian really is. Someone who knows Jesus in a personal way and follows Him. No wonder so many are falling away from "religion." If you don't know Jesus, then what's the point?

@@user-zy8th9lo2c Yes. You can not know an imaginary character. But you can know Jesus. It's because He is not imaginary. Here is Jesus speaking,..."O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me." (John 17:25) And then John the Apostle states,..."I write to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning." Love listening to you Ben and yes there are churches that seem to be there to make money, but I've gone to very small churches that I believe do really care about each other and would not react with violence or anger if you left the church but would just ask how you're doing if they ran into you. The pastors at some of these churches definitely aren't there to get rich because they could probably make more working at Wendy's. There's exceptions to everything though, sorry to hear your experience sucked so hard.

I hear what your saying, its happenned to me, we must reach perfection, good people make mistakes, like me, we are fragile, God gifts us Love, virtue, we must be constantly seeking asking. God gives us Strengh, wisdom, Power to over come all, we have to be constant as we are given by Grace, but the flesh is weak, so we must be contactly asking the lord, so God is honoured and not us, if not we are in danger of becoming vain, proud, blind, darkness. I was raised a Catolic, all my family as I grey up became honest with myself and started anaylysing, just like the Priest the practisices and my life did not make sence, I was studying to be a priest. Then something happened that I felt my life was in danger that I called out to God for help, I was certain nobody could help me but him. I he got me out of the danger a true miracle, I prayed to him that I was gratefull I wanted to find him, then he manifested, I found the Living God who Talks, Listens and sees, and everything in the Bible started to happen to this day. Dreams, Visions, Miracles, except the miracles happen everyday, i have witnnessed the power of God, seen true Prophets with the gift of the Holy spirit, powers, Anoited by God Himself. I understand if you don't believe me, so I suggest: you pray by yourself in private where only God can see you and ask him to please with all your heart sincerely to manisfest and show you he exists. He has the power he will do it himself. Just one suggestion, be 100% honest as God cannot be deceived, God sees sincere hearts, then God by Grace will do the rest. I pray to God now that he has mercy and manisfest to you and bless you.

Tonight, I saw you on the Greg Gutfeld show and thought it would be fun to check out some of your comedy and came across this confession. I am saddened by your comment that church is a "human institution created by men to make money...just a business." I'm sure there are some churches like that, but my experience is that meeting together with others who love Christ is a meaningful and important way to worship God. I have never been part of a church that existed to make money, but I have been a part of several churches that existed to love and serve God and others. The impact of those churches is phenomenal. I really am sorry that your experience has caused you to see evangelical Christianity in such an unfortunate way. I hope that maybe you are still seeking a relationship with God through prayer and His Word, even if no longer involved in a church. Blessings to you.

You did not believe it anyway... A human institution...? I was thinking that too. But seeing clearly there was a truth behind the facade of the churches. Missionaries testified of God really doing something. So I started my search for the real God. And found Him in Jesus Christ. Now I have contact with real believers in a lot of different churches. Pray for the hypocrites. Ignore the stupid traditions. Open your eyes and you'll find the real Jesus in real believers. And the big wonder is: Jesus is still building His church through a lot of broken churches. The power comes from Him. Surely not from the well organised evangelical church... Blessings in your search for reality.

Dont necessarily agree with everything you said but I really appreciate your balanced non judgmental point of view. Like you I think there are genuine ways of doing things if you want to go that way. I know no one asked for my opinion but it's cool to share haha

All good, the evangelical church caters mostly for women with their pop worship songs and emotionally charged sermons
