Those opening chords can stop people in their tracks as they all tune into this song. Try it at a mall one day and you'll see everyone of a certain age stop, tilt their heads like dogs when they hear a certain sound, and then start singing along or going into a trance as they slip back into yesteryear. For a few years, you could hear a Journey song pouring out of car stereos at every high school or college parking lot as they drove in and out.

Amen. As a newly inspired (beginner) guitarist when this came out, I was forced to notice that bass guides it all. Contributed to my respect for where bass can really bring a tune to life. Neil's guitar is awesome, but it needs that foundation.

I am glad you did the studio on this because when you do the live version from Houston 1981 you will appreciate it that much more. This is actually my favorite Journey song. Please do the live soon. Steve's vocals are even better, the energy is higher and Neal Schon's outro is better and extended. I am willing to bet you that you will find the live version at least 10X's better. Thanks and God Bless.

The winners on this one for me are whoever arranged the background vocal melodies and harmonies (probably Perry) and the bass player Ross Valory. The long outro was unusual even for the late 70s & early 80s, but it's one of those songs that build up such good will that people WANT to vibe with it a bit longer, so the outro was rarely cut short, at least in my memory.

Alright, when I was about 10...I can't say I cared about music...I was more worried about power rangers. As a kid, 98 degrees and Britney Spears etc. ruled the airwaves. Internet was hardly a thing. We listened to what was on the radio station. Surely, by my teens and into my high-school age, I was into music of course. Music like Taking Back Sunday, Linkin Park, System of a Down, Green Day, Paramore, Blink-182 and Incubus just to name a few. I could of CARED LESS about anything from the 70s 80s etc. I had no idea what it could of even sounded like, it wasn't even an IDEA to me. Into my early 20's it was mostly rap and some mainstream pop. My late 20's was A LOT of podcasts and ambient music, hardly any popular music and certainty not the radio. Music to me, at this point in my life was boring. It wasn't until my early 30's (now) that I decided to see what the hell music even sounded like before the 90s. For example, I could ask my entire friend group to name 1 Led Zeppelin song and they would say who? This music is mostly lost to my generation, that's just the truth. Anyways, sorry for the long explanation but long story short, this music was nowhere to be found my entire childhood/teen years. Lol

@@SalvoG It is kind of sad, to think of music being lost, in an entire generation. But I LOVE to see everything you are now discovering, and enjoying. Synth-Pop, Folk, Classic Rock, Musicals...very few people have such an eclectic interest in music. Most only like one or 2 genre's. I can find songs in EVERY single genre, that I like. Music can create and explain feelings. I grew up with my mom loving country, my dad loving folk and rock. And like I said, I like everything!
