Severe developmental disability + attraction to minors is really hard to unpack. It's hard to feel any sympathy for a guy with his predilections, but it's also hard to hold him fully accountable for what he's become. I don't really know what to say about him, except that he belongs somewhere where he can be safe, have structure, get offline, and not have any exposure to kids.

My little brother is disabled. Luckily he has a great family around him that ensures he’s taken care of, loved and looked after. It terrifies me to think about what would happen to him if he was just on his own in the world. This is extremely sad and everyone who enables / terrorizes this individual is sick in the head (more so than the person they’re terrorizing).

Same situation with my little bro, being surrounded by great family makes all the difference besides my older bro he used to make fun of the way he talked, crazy when close family even will pick on disabled people sometimes. My mother made me promise to always take care of him. Honestly freaks me out to think about what would happen if he was alone as well. Will always take care of him regardless of a promise, can't imagine life without him.

I was a social worker in my first career. Specifically, I worked with clients like Daniel. The cruel fact of life is that some people are incapable of living independently and require lifelong hospitalization for the safety of themselves and society. And I'm not advocating the mental institutions of the 1950s that were shut down by Reagan. We need compassionate, livable institutions for individuals like Daniel, which have highly qualified staff. It's far more cruel to have these people roaming around untreated than it is to force them into institutionalization. I used to think the opposite, and then I saw a severely mentally ill man with extreme paranoia bash a guys head in that he had never spoken to with an industrial mop bucket until blood was dripping off the ceiling because he thought the guy was using mind control on him.

I'm from Europe and here we have facilities like that,so it's always wild to me that people like Daniel or Chris Chan don't get help and are quite literally just thrown to the wolves (extreme trolls) which makes them spiral.

Sometimes they treat them better and we could learn from it. but then you got places like these where Daniel is pretty much a social punching bag with little to no support from his surroundings. These are people that were neglected their entire life by everyone and bullied /assaulted by random internet users. That would have an effect on even the sanest person, let alone a person with a developmental delay/ mental handicap. The things Daniel/Chris / other " lolcows" need is people that actually care about them and professionals to work with their mental health. Whatever these trolls are doing is making it so much worse and can and will result in more aggression/paranoia. You can't blame a severely mentally ill person for acting severely mentally ill, you can however blame these supposedly "vigilantes" (trolls) that egg him on .And now he could be going to jail? American jail? Where noone has any regards or training for a persons mental status or ability? Nah, this man should go to an intensive care institution that offers him safety, therapy, structure and protection from himself and others (like restricted or no internet access) .

I put Daniel Larson in a similar category as gypsy rose. They were so abused and slipped through the cracks when so young, that it caused some developmental delays. Thats why we see, with proper support, they could become more of a functioning member.

@scubatuba1083 i slightly disagree. The only thing that matters is intent to act on that attraction. You may never be able to "cure" a person of that attraction, but they can learn not to act on it. It would be similar to the therapy for those who have impulse problems or addiction or intrusive thoughts. It's learning to recognize those thoughts shouldn't be acted on. But that's hard when the internet is constantly pretending to be minors that want to be with him. They are LITERALLY feeding his disorganized thoughts. How can he ever get proper help when its popular to stalk him, trigger, or abuse him. The internet is feeding parts of his mental illness at this point.

The logic doesn't pan out and it's just an excuse to ignore the fact that tons of people are born evil or with the pdf disease. Girls are more likely to experience abuse in childhood, yet women are far less likely to hurt people compared to men. No one was bothering Daniel before. They started bothering him because he was trying to meet children. Daniel being left in peace = Daniel trying to meet children. Stop acting like he had no choice or chance at happiness. Not only does he know it's wrong, not only has he be caught multiple times and re-explained about why it's wrong...He does not care. There should be no sympathy or distain for him because no one should even know who he is. The second the state knew about him trying to groom minors and meet them for s*x he should have been locked in a ward for LONG time. Generally when you plead "insanity", they put you in a facility (basically a prison psych ward) where you can be "rehabilitated" to the point where you can understand right from wrong. Then they proceed with prosecuting the charges. The only times when you can get off from a serious charge are when you were literally not in control of yourself in any way, for example if someone drugged you without your knowledge. What I will say is that it becomes a medical issue either way at that point and the records are usually sealed. That's why we have very little understanding of what actually happened to Chris leading up to his "release" or what conditions have been imposed on him.

There was another update in this story which may play in Daniel's favor. His lawyer has filed a motion for him to be released on bond immediately as there was no confirmation that he was a flight risk when he was arrested. That coupled with the amount of people calling him impersonating FBI agents & celebrities may just be enough for Daniel to avoid jail time because let's face it the dude isn't going to blow up the White House or the FBI headquarters. He can barely afford food and shelter let alone the material for an explosive device.

hear hear, I have a friend who has asperges, he has an IQ of 140 and can draw you any chemical molecule of any drugs he has ever taken or seen in his life on a napkin, but he cannot properly function in society sober, but give him a little something everyday and he wont be a problem, ( I know he abuses the system to get as many different types op legal drugs too, can't blame him in this over simulated world.

You're taking that assessment from him, not a doctor. He either misunderstood or is plain making things up to try and give himself compliments. Also from what I remember he said because he was smart that's why they thought he was autistic, but then decided against it later on because he was showing the ability to learn further (which makes no sense, and no doctor ever said that to him, I'd bet money on that.) So yeah, you really don't need to explain to that autistic people can be smart. Cause I'm pretty sure that even he didn't say that.

There's nothing wrong with encouraging people with mental disabilities in their pursuits. However, it's easy to see that there were well meaning people in his life that cared very deeply for him who played into his delusions, rather than preparing him for the hard life his disability would ensure him. The issue I think is that when he was younger, his disability was covered by his natural charisma and ability to communicate. Just imagine if that kid spent his teen years in life skills instead of theatre classes. He was love starved, and that experience of being on TV , then in plays was like a drug for him, and that destroyed him. He's not free of guilt, but there should be some law against manipulation of disabled folk.

It reminds me of the kids in highschool that weren't classified as special education students but were obviously traumatized or developmentally challenged in some form. Teachers would allow students to harass these kids and also let these kids kind of run wild over the class. Everyone just looked the other way. They acted out often to those of us that paid attention but on their really bad days, that's when they finally got called into the office and let off... Just hands thrown in the air to these people. It seems that it continues into adulthood, through the system.

The way sentencing works, they will drop several of the charges and combine others into one single charge. So even if you have 10 charges that are all the same charge, and each comes with 10 years, most likely they'll be combined into one single charge. And then you'll only serve a percentage of your sentence in MOST cases, depending on the judge's order. For example, Arizona, you serve 80% of the sentence. Some states are as low as 30% with specific qualifications. So, in the end, he probably won't get a lot of time.
