I have struggled with the exact same thing, Paige! As I’ve gotten further onto my twenties and started a full-time job, I’ve slowly become a check-list person who can’t enjoy the little things in life, only thinking what needs to be done… What has helped with this is making up rules (ironic, I know) for the weekends, like banning the use of actual check-lists and playing it by the ear.

The checklist life! It's living by others expectations too much in my opinion. It takes practice but it's learning to say no, also shaking off the social pressures and doing your own thing and being okay when others don't approve or are indifferent to it. It come back to finding a balance.

about the checklist problem, I completely get it. I feel like I have to organise everything into lists and flowcharts. but at some point the checklist will become second nature, slightly more spontaneous. you're life will become more a series of fleeting, exciting and beautiful moments.

It’s really nice to see you growing up so well, (i’m only 25 myself so not in a patronising way). Best of luck for the future xx

When I was a student at University studying for both my Bachelor degree and Master's degree, I found it very stressing with the large amount of work which I had to do. I was worried about not being able to study for my mid-terms and final exams not finishing my essays and dissertation on time because I always struggled with essays.

Paige, I totally had this same problem of seeing life as a checklist, even the fun things. It was hard because I couldn't actually enjoy the moments and I felt like I aways had to do more to be happy. But through therapy and my relationship with God, I could understand that I had this mindset because I would put my value in what I did instead of what I was. I thought I needed to prove my worth to be good enough. Thankfully, I was able to overcome it as I understood that I was loved in spite of what I did, and that I was precious to God just by being myself. I hope you can also come to an understanding of why you think like that and be able to overcome it! :)

You sound so overwhelmed, even the way you talk about parties at your house as exhausting and a drain on you. You need to stop feeling like you have to do things, and to make more time for yourself. Turning life in to a check list means you're not present in it. Try and find some social things that are relaxing, like Netflix watch parties where you watch a film together but on your own. Or something that's a slower pace, like pub quizzes or crafts. I learnt how to crochet and found a class for this, it sounds granny-ish but it was so relaxing, just six people sitting together and having tea and chatting whilst learning. Something I wish I'd known is that you don't have to stay in house shares if you're not comfortable. Landlords will release you from contracts if you can find a replacement tenant (you can put up notices for this or ask around). You need to put yourself first instead of worrying what others will think of you. Two friends of mine who graduated Cambridge this year and wanted to stay on rented a two-bed flat overlooking the river and it's completely affordable for them on entry level salary for their jobs. It's such a nice space. Ground floor bedrooms that are part of the communal space are always the worst in any house share, and also the least safe. I am frankly surprised the guys are all upstairs and you're the one in this room, my male friends would never stand for that.

12:00 I can relate to this as well! When I moved out for the first time, I couldn’t feel myself at home at that place either and only viewed that flat as “a temporary place to live in”. I don’t know your situation, but maybe you know deep down that you won’t be living there for long or maybe you only go home to sleep so you don’t spend enough time there.

Definitely struggling with the checklist problem since starting my PhD - trying to do too much in the very small amount of free time I have at the moment... scheduling in some actual free time where I can do whatever I want has helped to some extent. If you find the solution please share 😂

I think people discount the post-college adjustment phase… you’ve been a student all of these years with expectations, deadlines, no real responsibility.. when you’re free, some people flounder or wonder what’s next. I think relaxing and taking your time to plan your life takes time and practice. RELAX! There’s no next steps.. this is life.. work and sleep 😂🥴

Hi Paige, I can recommend you to buy the Alpine Sleepsoft earplugs. I'm a difficult sleeper myself and woke up from every noise. I've tried many different earplugs to find out which worked. These earplugs are the best ones I've ever had and are comfortable too. They are suitable for different ear sizes and also last for quite a long time. I've been buying them for several years now.

21:47 : "No bonus is worth it for sacrificing my work-life balance". I feel this is something is that we should normalize, because I see so many people (especially in India) spending long hours in the office hoping to go that extra mile. I do understand that some people want to do that, and that is perfectly fine, but lately it has become commonplace to expect that from everyone. Post-covid (is Covid really in the rear view mirror though?) the distinction between office hours and personal time has really blurred to the point of vanishing.
