I have always loved The Brecon Beacons....

The best translation? “Ban” usually means a “summit” and “bannau” is the plural….so. “The summits of Brecheiniog” is “bannau brecheiniog”. If you don’t speak Welsh it’s a bit of a mouthful so a name in English, usually said as “The Brecon Beacons” is accessible. As mr evans says, a beacon can mean many things. But we used these beacons as warning fires on the mountains in the event of invasion…and also to celebrate things like coronations.for hundreds of years…probably thousands. And we need warning beacons now because as this story shows, unhinged lunatics are in charge of our culture. There was a story last year that they have started To “de-colonise” the National Museum. I shudder to think what they have in mind.

Why do the lunatics who suggest all this madness seem to have so much clout ? The more outrages the publicity when like all mad people they should be ignored for their own good.

I've yet to hear a non-English person apologising for misprouncing English surnames or place names.

First, who owns the English language? Not the Welsh National Park. Second, are they aware of things called ‘maps’? These, on paper or on screen, would need to be changed. Now that paper maps, such as the OS ones, aren’t reprinted as often, it may take a decade to implement. Third, there are also objects called ‘road signs’. If all were to be changed, it will cost thousands. Finally, nobody outside Wales know what the Welsh words are nor do they care. They will just go somewhere else. This is a stupid idea.

So, let me get this right - they were offended by the concept of a beacon, so they said they would get rid of the beacon concept by using the Welsh word for... er...beacon ??- this makes no sense, at all! They say they changed the name, but they haven't changed the name, just dropped the English translation of the name. Here in Wales I have always seen the name written as "Bannau Brycheiniog" as well as its English translation "Brecon Beacons". ("Brycheiniog" = Brecon, Bannau = Beacons).

As a resident, no way am I calling the Brecon Beacons anything else. Even if the police try to get me to change my stance by force!!
