“It’s Scary For Filmmakers” | Christopher Nolan Goes to Bat For Physical Media

With his latest bit of IMAX spectacle, Oppenheimer, hitting the streets as Blu-Ray and 4k Ultra HD discs, Christopher Nolan wants us all to know that no streaming company is going to steal them from you. As the industry continues to find its way through the age of streaming, we got to talk to Nolan about the economics of the home video market, how Best Buy is phasing out their sale of physical media, and whether or not he thinks Memento would be harder to make in the film financing landscape of today. Beyond anything else, though, he admits times are “scary for filmmakers,” when their movies can disappear from a streaming service.

Main problem is, there was a time where a movie didn't need to make marvel money to be successful. Cause it could make a lot of money back and a profit on dvds. Hell a lot of movies we consider classics had new life on physical media. But with that revenue source gone. We're just not going to get the same variety, mainly because theres an ev3n bigger financial risk now. Basically killing the mid budget movie entirely.

Movies released to home media often used to have amazing artwork on the cover, bonus features, and a real sense of connectedness and intimacy. The VHS release of Independence Day had a holographic plate as the front cover that, when it was slowly tilted, showed the animation of the NYC skyscraper explosion. Physical media will always be important for preservation. It passes down from store to store, from people to people, from generation to generation. For digital unless it's pirated and shared, it won't survive. Anything solely dependent on servers is dead on arrival. It immediately kills rights to ownership, it can't be resold, it's tied to an account or device and it will be killed by corporations when they inevitably shut down servers.

Except for the fact home releases have butchered the quality of the original movie with bad DVNR, edits and wrong color. This has gotten to the point where movie fans had to do their own film transfers and release it themselves. So your physical disc elitism is void when home releases are flawed and are not always the original movie. Especially since you can hold 1000 or more movies in high quality onto one hard drive disc rather than waste endless space on imperfect home releases.

I'll say this much. If physical media were to return and people bought it, we'd have a broader and richer range of movies (and music, and video games) than we currently do. Studios would take more chances with one off films and potential new franchises instead of giving us Superhero Cinematic Universe vol. 47 all the time.

Also we need extra features like how early DVDs used to have back in the early 2000s. Those made the DVDs worth owning and upped their value to the consumer. Behind the scenes, blooper reels, commentaries, deleted scenes, alternate scenes, making of documentaries, movie trivia, mini games like quizes, animated menus, the works. What happened to the graphic designers who made those?

It happened with computer games, we don't own any physical game anymore, quality has declined, incomplete games being released and non stop DLC alerts etc. There is one plus point though it's an open field now to produce quality, filmmakers can produce their own low budget products without any studio involvements.

On most blurays with a wide aspect ratio you get black bars across the top and bottom of the screen and wondered if you get the same black bars when you stream a movie or is it cropped or zoomed to fill the screen?

Nolan et al are forgetting an aspect of Blu-ray: BD+ protection. Discs using this protection require players with access to servers on the Internet to properly decrypt/de-obfuscate the disc content. Thus, while you may own the media, the disc publishers own the keys to playing the discs. Of course there are tools available to circumvent this, but legality varies by jurisdiction.

You can't fight the wheel of time. Physical Media will not disappear, but it will be niche just like vinyl. Some people will always want it cause the experience is different. It's just way more convenient to switch on your Smart TV and stream a movie than buying a blue-ray.

Yes you can. And the wheel of time is about to be turned all the way back to the Great Depression and WWII in Hollywood when the media monopolies get broken up, the major studios get handed back to the descendants of those great studio chiefs like the great Louis B. Mayer of MGM and the old Studio System returns. Movie stars are going to be under contract to one studio again and MGM will return to its former with "more stars than there are in the heavens" like it once had Clark Gable, Mickey Rooney, Jimmy Stewart, Ava Gardner, Gene Kelly, Lana Turner, Hedy Lamarr, and the greatest of them all: Judy Garland. The great dream factory gave the world all those great musicals including The Wizard of Oz will rise again and it will be the greatest year in movie history; 1939 all over again.
