The world is beginning to learn about problems of the smartphone era that affect everything from our minds to our politics. But the smartphones are not to be blamed. The infrastructure of the Internet, often hidden from our sight, provided the technological foundational for the problems we are seeing today. It is possible to build an alternative Internet made with modern wireless technologies and new software, that make a new foundation for freedom in the digital era. André is developing software for the new Internet, and blogs about the current macroscopic changes in Cyberspace. He wrote viral blog posts such as "The Web began dying in 2014", "A plan to rescue the Web from the Internet", and "Layers of the Internet Economy". He works as an open source programmer funded by donations, and is developing a free and decentralized social network for phones, together with other pioneers. André also teaches programming through workshops and conference talks, having had spoken at dozens of conferences around Europe.
With 7 years of professional experience in software engineering, internet entrepreneurship, open source peer-to-peer systems, and mobile app user interfaces, André has a holistic view of the industry. He graduated MSc in Computer Science (Distributed Systems) from Aalto University (Finland) and BSc in Computational Mathematics from UFMG (Brazil). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I wish I could have been a part of that, maybe even older. Life was personal. And with the world accepting medical tyranny because they don't know what the Nuremberg Code is..my generation is the last generation that can do something.. they're worried about football, video games, lose women, comfort, and as always money, staying childless and single, the current generation is soft, spoiled, medicated, while government approved academics past and current are busy building their own digital prison.

I'm a web developer but want to get involved with mesh networks and things related to what he spoke about in third world countries. I'm curious if its more beneficial to move on to learning about networking, or would it be better to develop software that works around intermittent connectivity? I know that developing nations have the hassle of slower connectivity, making a lot of the modern web frameworks/features irrelevant, so im wondering what the work around here is? I also wonder about PWA's and how they are able to work away from being connected. I wonder if this will move in this same direction. Im going to do some digging and see if i can figure out what exactly these organizations are building. Im curious if these are web apps, mobile apps, or actual software on the computers themselves. If anyone can point me in a direction that would be great

The people can make their own internet...until government makes that illegal as well. Kinda like how some governments (around the world) are attempting to make cryptocurrencies illegal. I hope we can make a free internet but understand that their will be opposition from the powers that be.
