@@Bombexploid34 Ya, I also noticed when using google chrome and playing an mmo game it takes like half as much RAM; like 4-6 gigs compared to 8-12gigs on Win11. Also when you install google chrome make sure PREFERRED OZONE PLATFORM is WAYLAND not default to change it type in the address bar > chrome://flags then SEARCH OZONE select where it says DEFAULT and you can change it to wayland... this really helped with my gaming to get 165 fps not 60fps (Default uses X11 or Xwayland). I just figured this out lately and really bothered me. Firefox seems to work by default with wayland but wondered why doesn't chrome work with it.

It is more secure, no spying telemetries, no force reboots, and loads of free quality apps built by passionate people around the world that just wants to contribute to the free open source software cause. Mint or Pop! OS. Not Ubuntu, they are the corporate style Linux and they're going in a direction many Linux users don't like. I'm not an authority on it so do your own research. I tried Mint and I have it set up as a dual boot with Win 10 so when the time comes to completely kick Microsoft I am ready. Mint is pretty easy to use once you figure out how to install things and how to access file directories. There are very many compatible games for gamers and with Linux you are more secure and nobody is harvesting your data, it just does what you want it to and isn't anti-consumer.

After 14 years of working with Windows, I formatted my Windows PC and installed fresh Linux Mint on it. The PC is revived. Its 4GB of RAM seems enough for Linux Mint. Except for some random freezes, I haven't had any other issues with Linux. Linux is just lightweight. When Linux is loaded, the CPU usage drops to 5%. In my Windows 10, the CPU would run upto 100% for 4-5 minutes after a system restart.

Honestly I would love to if Linux in 2024 had support for all hardware and laptops. Constantly some issue pops up. I understand that Linux has this idea of me fixing issues but god damn can I change brightness on my laptop please? I am tired fixing shit like this. Wayland same shit - you have RTX? Oh gosh, sorry for that, you will have totally broken windows in Fedora
@NeoNine10
@NeoNine10 4 ай бұрын
I hear you. It is getting better though. I used to have to fix the brightness control ability manually so it worked on my 2011 iMac on older Linux. Now those that come with Linux kernel 6.8 it works right away as it should after install. A kernel level built-in fix might come later down the road for you as newer kernels release. I was surprised they eventually decided to get around incorporating a fix for a computer that old. I figured if they could've done it, they would have already. But there you have it.
@EugeniaLoli
@EugeniaLoli 4 ай бұрын
Why are you asking this from the Linux kernel (a team of only a few engineers), but not from Microsoft? You see, Windows doesn't support everything either. You constantly have to download drivers from the manufacturers' website. So why do you expect all hardware under the sun to magically work under Linux? How about you get supported hardware instead? The laptops brightness works on all 3 of my laptops btw. As for nvidia problems, do you think that it's a coincidence that the only graphics driver that is NOT open source (and not fixed by the community) is the only one that has trouble with Wayland? Neither ATI nor Intel have problems you see. Both are offering open source drivers and are now part of the kernel, so proper testing has been done. Again, buy and use hardware that's supported.

I have OpenSuse runing on a Raptor-lake rig (I7-13700k, 32gb Corsair platinum 6200mhz ram, RTX 4080, Valve Index VR kit) and I can literally play 95% of my GOG and Steam Library on Linux with at least similar to better performance than Windows, including VR games . One of my favorite VR games is Hubris, that game uses OpenXR and has always failed miserably on Linux until a recent SteamVR update resolved the issue and the game runs perfectly now. I now do MOST of my gaming on Linux. Over the last weekend I purchased Moss chapters 1 and 2 and beat the entire first chapter running on SteamVR in Linux. Now if Meta would open the occulus app to Linux so I can play my Oculus exclusive games on Linux using Revive that would be amazing but will never happen, Lone Echo 1 and 2 are some of the greatest games ever.

Switching to Linux is not easy for a lot of people. 1st if they need MS Office, Adobe, Autodesk, etc. that will be a problem. If you just need a Office type program then you are covered. Also if your a heavy online gamer (that wants to run COD, etc) then they wont work on Linux thanks to the Anti-cheat software they use (basically a root-kit that gives 100% access to your PC). I switched a long time ago and I game. I have over 460 games in my Steam library with maybe 10 that dont work in Linux. For new people switching over I would recommend in the following order: 1. Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 2. Pop!_OS 3. Fedora (more up to date software) For more experienced users who sort of know what they are doing: 1. EndeavourOS I would never suggest Ubuntu to anyone anymore as they are trying to be like Microsoft along with all their bad ideas.

Windows 11 is so much better than linux .. I have been linux for 3 months, and there are so many bugs when playing games or video editing.

If you only code, I agree, you should switch to Linux. Same if you don't want to upgrade your hardware and don't have any real necessity of using windows features. In all the other cases you probably could. Considering WSL 2 advancements and docker containers you can do everything you need on Windows, including playing, development and everything else.

Yep windows is for real PC users that do various things beyond just programming and some minor low level work. Everything else is for windows especially if you play games and have actually new hardware. Weird as fuck but Linux people love using 15 year old outdated laptops then comically cry about a new os taking resources..

WSL is a lovely tool indeed, but I can't agree with Docker on Windows. The performance hit is huge since it spawns a "small" VM. I've been using Docker a lot for my development work lately, and I must say running Docker natively on Linux was a breeze.

I agree it's not ideal, having more ram usually fixes the issue. And for what I do in any case it's mandatory. So no real problem. Sure it's not good if you want it running on light machines.@@kand7dev

Too bad some things just don't work on linux..because of shitty corporate lack on interest. I use BigLinux, and i bought a AE7 Creative Audio board, after reading online that linux has drivers for it. But !! XD .. after booting with the sound card. all linux distro's hang up on boot. And the reason, and i quote : "older ae-7’s used a IDT bridge controller chip which worked fine with linux. and there is a difference with the release date ae-7’s and current revision ae-7’s. they changed a lot of stuff on the card." So my computer wont boot with this soundcard because no one is interested to update some fucking drivers :-))

Well deserved too. Why should anyone business give a shit about this bootleg os that just finally caught up to hard slightly and has numerous limits of you actually use your PC for more than just typing and the use base is so comically small? There's not enough people to give a shit about on the bootleg os to waste resources supporting it. 🤣

Why i should install linux and bother with all this stuff like wine and etc. if i can just install windows and get all this things out of box with no problems? What does linux give you that windows doesn't? Better performance? Nah~. I have i7 3770k and rx 580. DaVinci Resolve runs pretty well on windows with no issues, but in linux, even in nobara, which has option that allows you to install davinci dependencies it starts, switches between fusion tab, edit and etc., but when i import files for example png image and press play nothing happens on preview screen. If go to fusion and try to make something in there it just crashes. Gaming also is terrible. I tried to play ready or not on different versions of proton even on proton ge. In best case it gives me around 30 fps on lowest settings, while windows above 60 on high.

Firstly, I'd like to ask when you last used Linux. And also basically everything you stated is wrong. I run a RHEL 9 based distro with quite an old kernel, and I can game completely fine with it.

Linux is simply not the right OS for the masses. Windows 11 is not as good as previous versions of Windows. Even the professional version intentionally throttles my CPU by 11%, which makes no sense until you become aware that there is a more expensive version that does not throttle the CPU. I'd have purchased the more expensive version except by the time I learned of the CPU throttling issue I'd already spent many hours installing software and configuring my development environment.

Microsoft is getting just as bad as Apple. I used to be able to uninstall anything I want on windows. I finally find a workaround to remove windows bloatware and the next day it's back. GTFO this shouldn't be legal. I purchased my PC and Windows key, I shouldn't be forced to run things I don't want to run.

I love how a bunch of geeks gather together to convince themselves that we mortal normal users should actually abandon the ease and comfort of a paid operating system that GETS STUFF DONE WITH NO REAL ISSUES and be like them, like waste your whole fkn day on a minor technical problem that would never have happened in Windows or Mac in the first place.
