I say this with respect and admiration… stop defining your channel as a gear channel. People don’t continue to watch your videos because they like the new durston tent or a new sleeping pad. They watch because you’re engaging and interesting. The channel isn’t called “backpacking gear (fill in the blank)”. Your channel is called “Dan Becker”. Keep being Dan, and there will be folks there to engage with you and support you. I’ll see you in the next one.

Hey brother never apologize for taking care of your family. Hopefully most people who watch your channel will understand that doing this channel and videos is your job but family has always got to come before work. As a Christian man myself Christ always first and then comes your family. I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your father. You and your family will be in my prayers. I agree loosing a parent is always a hard thing even when you expect it. I’m glad to know that he was a godly man and I know that has to bring you some comfort. I love watching your channel and learning about the new gear and seeing the places you go and seeing the love you have for the great outdoors and your love for Christ and sharing that on the channel. You never know by sharing that on here you may make an impact on someone’s life and they come to know Christ because of your witness or testimony. Hope you have a speedy recovery and we down here in Arkansas send you and your family love and prayers.

Thanks for the update. Thinking of you during this time. Don't consider yourself a gear only guy! Branch out! Do section hikes. Review trails. Find hidden gems. Talk about backpacking with kids. Talk about state parks. Im also from WI -pick the best day hikes and take us along, and with tour family! Talk about transitioning from car camping to backpacking. I terview someone with wilderness survival/first aid. You got this!

Thanks for the update. We never know how different life events will affect us until we are in the middle of them. You've experienced several major stress events in a short period of time and seem to be handling them well. My guess is your relationship with God is a major factor. Your openness is having a positive effect on others. Keep up the good work.

My father took me on my first overnight hike when I was in fourth grade, and we thoroughly enjoyed the hiking and catching and cooking Rainbows from the coldest lake I had been in up to that age. Hiking together, he helped me earn the hiking merit badge on my way to my Eagle. During his late seventies we walked a couple miles on one of our familiar Cascade Mountains trail, but had to turn back due to his knee problem. On the drive to his home he commented, "I think my hiking days are over." His spirit went to be with the Lord two months after his ninetieth birthday. His Trapper Nelson pack is stored with my gear. There is going to be a great reunion for all of us who trust Jesus.

So sorry to hear about your dad. Best of luck with the healing process both with your loss and your eyes. Love the workbook. I consider myself a somewhat experienced backpacker, but the structure the workbook provides has elevated my planning process from "I think I have it all figured out" to more of a checklist approach. It also helps with communicating the plan to others. Appreciate all you do!

I just discovered your channel about 2 hours ago. Thank you for being there. My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer (slow growing) 5 years ago. When we lost our house in 2020, due to covid, we bought a Ford Transit and decided to LIVE the nomad style in Arizona (we're from MN). We're back in MN now. We did the nomad thing for a year. I guess what I'm trying to say is.....we all need each other. Learning how to camp/hike the correct way or learning from somebody else's misfortune can be applied to anyone's life. Being Christian is a huge plus in my eyes. Jesus is the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE. He IS life. He cannot lie. When we invite Him into our heart we've literally invited eternal life to live in us. You WILL see your dad again. Zephaniah 3:17.

You certainly don’t have to apologize for anything, it’s called life. Sounds to me like your priorities are in order. You were there for your dad, you’re there for your kids and your family, you’re taking care of your health. All of these qualities are quite admirable. The podcast, the gear review, anything going forward is a bonus. Will be here for you. Take care of yourself and your precious family. Time is shorter than we know.

It's all great, Dan. I'm not new to the outdoors (been backpacking since my teens in the mid-80's, which has been in the Rocky Mountains of western Montana since the mid-90's when we moved here), but I am new to making videos. My channel will simply be sharing my experiences in the outdoors, including short and long day hikes, overnight and multi-day backpacking trips, nature videos, gear reviews, hiking and backpacking tips, whatever ... just sharing what I'm doing or seeing in the great outdoors. I know everyone won't like everything I do. And that's okay. My tribe will find me. Just like your tribe has found you. Don't worry about staying locked into one thing. A mix is good. I enjoy the podcasts right along with everything else. Just do your thing and keep going. :)

Thanks for sharing your situtation Dan. One thing you could do is send out some helpers / interns / delegates. Dont know what to call them, but people who love the outdoors and are willing to be your "correspondents" in the field and your podcast setup can be your "news studio" from where you report and analyze the info and footage they bring back. Give them questions to fill out regarding the gear while they are out. The categories you usually pay attention to and talk about, comfort, ease of use, etc. There would also be a ton of stuff to talk about besides gear with these videos. You could comment on how they could have done something better if they are not experienced campers/hikers. You could even chat with them while they are out there alike they do on the news. Call them in the middle of the night to see how warm the sleeping bag is, haha. I think that video format would be fun. I know I would test out some gear here in North Carolina so I'm sure lots of other people would be willing to. Best of luck, God bless

I just started following you recently but long enough to see the Grand Canyon incident which, believe it or not, helped me greatly. Not only did I learn about something I had no previous knowledge of, but also due to the nature of my work, a few months later I was dealing with someone who had lost a loved to Rhabdo. He was not even 30 yet and his family and fiancée were all very confused when it all started happening because no one could figure out what was going on with him. I say all this to say that you never know to what degree you may help someone so “being all over the place” doesn’t really matter! Just be YOU! I sure am sorry about your Dad hun, that one is hard no matter when it happens. Unfortunately for me, I lost mine at the age of 15. Still cry at times, and still miss the crap out of him. But ya know what’s great is the rest of the story where we all get to see them again! I also hope you are healing up well from your eye surgery, looked brutal 😬 Bless you! You have been through a lot this past year. I will be keeping you and your family in my prayers. You hang in there and, if your mamma is still living, be sure to give her a big ole hug. She probably could use a few of those right now. ❤️

The Dan Becker I see on utube comes across as authentic and credible. Unapologetic Christian, family oriented, loves people, enjoys the outdoors and encourages us to get out there with you. Doesn’t matter the content because you’re interesting, positive and curious (not willing to drum on about something you’re not necessarily as interested in as you once were). We will continue to watch and yes because of you I switched to ONX Backcountry. Since watching I have hiked in Glacier National Park and Big Bend. Will be hiking Collegiate West out of Twin Lakes, Co the end of this month. I too lost my father and even 10 yrs later think of him often, always trying to remember the good memories and his witty sayings. Kind of cheeky over utube, but stay true to yourself and we will keep watching and supporting as we can. Sorry for your loss but for the believers it just gets better.

Dan take it from a fellow Christian guy if your dad is up in Heaven with our Lord and Savior, then is well better off than the ones left down here in this crazy world. It's a blessing to know our loved ones make in. Praying for you n your family. Hang in there brother.

We lost my dad a couple of years ago after a loooong battle with lung cancer. It wasn't sudden, we expected it, but it still hurt me to the core. You're right; you're never ready. Mine was in his 60s! Way too young for that. Cancer sucks. Death sucks. But I'm thankful for the promise eternal reunions because of Jesus!

Hi Dan, my condolences, sorry about your father. Also, you looked fine before the surgery and you still do now. I hope you can make a strategy to limit reading comments, might even be easier to have someone else go through them for you sometimes. Please remember that you don’t need to change how you look for anyone else, it doesn’t matter what they think. Hoping you’re doing well.

Nothing makes you feel like a little kid than losing a parent. My dad died suddenly at 54 a decade ago. Was supposed to pick him up to go fishing and didn't answer the door. Was and still is rough. Left Michigan for Colorado and constantly find places that I still find myself saying " damn, dads gotta see this". Heart is with you muchacho Also.. got onX elite. We're here for you.. not just the hiking or gear or whatever. You're good people, Dan. Get Ed Viesturs on if you can

Dan, I lost my Dad to colon cancer at age 57, when I was 31. My heart goes out to you and although knowing that he is at peace doesn’t take the sting away completely. Time does help, so hang in there and keep his memory alive with your kids!

I would recommend you be easy on yourself this loss is so fresh. My Dad passed from lung CA 4 year’s ago. I’m still grieving at times it is hard and you still have to get up and do things. Talk to a grief counselor if you are feeling extremely low.

As I was setting out to do my first ever back packing trip, I came across your videos. I really admire you as a someone that makes KZfaq videos. You’re great at it. So, I had a rough last year as well. Caught Pneumonia this winter, was treated with antibiotics and also steroids that ended up inducing sudden onset diabetes. I had to make lifestyle changes and started hiking. Between more exercise and cutting out sugars and simple carbs, I’ve dropped 30 lbs. It’s nice hearing about your issues, recovering from surgery. I’m really sorry to hear about your Father. I lost mine back in 2017. You definitely have a knack for story telling, and this type of content is great! I’m sure many of us would like to see more of it.

Sorry for your loss Dan. Can I just say I’m a London Black Cab Driver. A while ago I picked up someone who moved to London from North of England. I asked if they ever go pack to see their parents they said about twice a year and both their parents were in their mid 70s. One thing that really struck me was if they go back home twice a year bearing in mind their parents might have another 20 years at most they will only see their parents 40 times in their life time assuming they live to a very good age. What a sobering thought. There is nothing more important than your health and family.

I will keep your family in prayer, your continued recovery and rejoice in your father's homegoing! We have a hope as we go through a nature grieving, knowing our loved ones are alive with Christ. I actually loved your podcast videos. Although I can't do extreme hikes anymore, as I move into my 60s vertigo is doing its thing, but I love to share what I learn in my travels. I had to downsize on my tents and because of you videos I kept my favorite, which is a 2017 Marmot Limelight, best tent I've ever had. I loved your Sawyer mission trip and Owen is one special young man and I love "all over the place", never know what to expect. Be well!

Thanks for sharing, enjoy your family! Very sorry about your dad, I lost my mother the same way, colon cancer in about the same time frame, such a hard thing for families to watch their loved one go that way. Glad you got to be with him, that is what is important. Thanks for what you do.
