Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. Yes. This scene was sad but satisfying. The mom was not cruel but heartless toward her own daughter while being gentle with her niece openly. That would hurt anyone's feelings, and she never apologized or explained herself.

I loved how this drama actually punished people fully for their behavior, the fact it took years for Shaoshang to forgive her mother and chose to stay with the Empress is perfection. FL was righteous from the start and always repayed people's kindness towards her. I have never been so proud of a fictional character and that's why the mother's behavior enraged me even more. I really feel no sympathy towards her, she was abusive, period. Niaoniao was actually one of the protagonist that showed more filial piety out of all the others, she simply considered the empress a maternal figure more than her mother

I think the mother did many things for NiaoNiao with good intentions, just like her dad. It's just she's doing them in completely the wrong way and she's quick to judge niaoniao. Also, NiaoNiao's dad always relied on the mom to act the bad cop. NiaoNiao was also quick to judge her mother. On the very first meeting, she decided that she can't rely on her mom. They're both stubborn people and exactly the same personality so they don't get along and keep bumping heads even though they love each other. The empress also have a life time of being the nation's mother figure so naturally she'll know how to raise children then two generals like niaoniao's parents. In this scene I feel bad for niao niao's mom because she came with good intentions. It's good that she learnt her lesson in the end

@@toki7111 There are no good intentions if you think that only punishment, betittle, humiliation is the best way to teach your children. Oh and telling that your cousin will be treated as your daughter. It's trying to break a person. Raising a child is the most difficult task you can have as a adult/parent. Your always insecure if you do it right. But as a parent myself and a aunt for many. One thing you'll never do to any child is what her parents did to her. And yes even her dad. There is no good and bad cop in parenthood. Parents need to draw one line in front of the children and discuss their difference in private and find a solution. Also NiaoNiao didn't judge, she heard her mother saying it. Even her aunt, uncle and brothers told her mother that she is unfair against NiaoNiao. Her parents made a big mistake. You love your children is the solid basic and from that solid basic you'll learn them what they need to learn. The empress showed her love and care and she learned faster than her mother could imagining. It's so sad that she notice to late that she was losing her daughter because of her behavior. Her daughter didn't want to grieve at a place that should have been her save harbour but never was.

It always pained me how Shaoshang´s mother only saw the worst in her and made her suffer all kind of humilliations and loneliness. However, when she met the empress and knew the feeling of being loved unconditionally and without any judgment even I could feel loved. One of the lines that as a daughter hurt me the most was "I will treat her as my daughter and won't let her suffer a bit" while Shaoshang listened quietly. This is the end that she deserved

I love this scene because I feel like Shaosang went home, her actual home where she was loved and wanted. Also, the fact that they let her and still took care of her shows that they really accepted her as their own. As much as her birth mother says she loved her she never really let herself get close to her or love her. We find out why but she was so cruel to her. Her father wasn't, so there was no reason to be.

The only way she loved her daughter was in her heart, She never voiced it and never showed it in any way. Not showing affection to your child because they're "not well behaved" is the stupidest excuse or reason to ever exist, especially her who had abounded her child since birth and never checked her whereabouts, she had no right to judge her daughter's character.

@@Shayhaughable the Empress for all her kindness, raised horrible children. The Empress was more of a loving mentor to Shao Shang as she explained how relationships work. Shao Shang began to understand her mother alot better but she is just like her mother in that she is stubborn, she would never forgive until she received a verbal apology which she gets later on.

The thing is she always treated NN as a rebellious soldier who needed to be tamed and broken. Not as her daughter that she had wronged by giving her up for 15 years just to defeat her monster-in-law, who needed her love and doting after those 15 years of absence She also failed to see that Niao Niao’s rebellious nature was not a sign of NN’s bad character but simply the result of not having anyone to guide her and having been forced to be tough to survive during those 15 years : so instead of trying to slowly teach her, she tried to break this rebellious nature, as if it was NN’s fault and flaws Also failed to realize that every time she was cherishing Yang Yang and admonishing NN, every time she compared them, she was not teaching NN nor was she giving her a model to follow : she was hurting her, pushing her away and convincing her daughter she had no love for her She pitied YY for having been mistreated by her cruel mom and therefore doted on her : so why couldn’t she do the same for her own daughter who had lacked her mother for 15 years ? 😢

Her mother was warned several times by several people that the way she was going about "correcting" Niao Niao behavior was wrong. She was warned she lose her. Niao Niao had been mistreated her entire life by the grandmother and aunt. What she needed was someone to show her love and kindness to help her improve. The empress gave that to her. The mother understood too late the carrot was more effective then the stick with Niao Niao to get her to behave.

Literally NOBODY ever just said: Madam as her mother YOU abandoned her at birth, YOU ran off to a war zone, and YOU ignored her for 15 years, and now rather than protecting and teaching her, you hit her starve her and imprison her worse than her grandmother or Aunt ever did. Of course, no army in history, let alone a chinese army, would ever allow on the battlefield a woman who just gave birth and got newborn baby (shaosheng's brother) suckin on her titties, so, the whole thing is a tad bit ridic LOL She would have been told to go home to her babies, and her husband would have lost all "face" forever.

What got me, is that the mother and father had learned that she wasnt getting treated properly but didnt send anyone back to become a caretaker or at least guide their daughter. All they did was work to dethrone the SIL and somewhat call out the grandmother but nothing much happened to her. Then the mom is susprised when she doesnt act in the manner that the mom wants in a daughter and more that the daughter doesnt automatically have blind trust in the mom. and her harsh treatment and obvious favoritism of the cousin -she justified it all the way until this point.

I agree. She failed as a mother. Especially when she gave Yang Yang so much love and appreciation but none to her own daughter who had suffered far more over the years than her cousin. I have zero sympathy with Niao Niao's mother.

Well her mother literally said ‘worthless’...I really wanted to slap her silly at that. Her Mom might have had (some) good intentions, but she basically made her unmarriagable. If she hadn’t gotten engaged to Ling Buyi and won the affection and respect of the emperor and empress (and Consort Yue), no other family would have allowed her to marry in to it.

This scene still moves me into tears....Niao2 made a tough decision to shut herself in the palace far away from her world. She just wanted to be away from the pain gnawing her her heart and mind.....Away from the mother who acted like she never cared for her and away from the fiance who broke her trust. She felt betrayed and alone... Her mother's cry....a realization too late....Well lady you deserve it.... She never tried to understand Niao2 instead she berated her all the time.....humiliated her, slapped her, screamed at her, spanked her, told her she preferred her cousin instead...never consoled her, never praised her, never earnestly talked to her, never gave her due attention.....That is why Niao2 was rebellious...how can a girl endure more....Niao2 simply was only asking for a mother's love and understanding....indeed it is sad.....Mother dear.... you have failed her......

Pain is a great teacher... and the mother gave it to her full force. She took the easy route and adopted the cousin as her daughter because she had received an education, and was much easier to handle than Niao Niao. However, the Empress took the challenge of a stubborn Niao Niao with a gentle and kind approach. Her heart truly bled for Niao Niao. She gently prodded her, challenged her, encouraged her, and gave her the confidence she needed to become the confident woman she deserved to be. She became powerful and confident. The Empress didn't suppress Niao Niao, she brought her character to full fruition and strength through kindness and gentility. Niao Niao became powerful! Kindness brings out the best gifts of all people. Pain brings other emotions, but love and loyalty will NEVER be yours. Niao Niao rewarded those who loved her with her extreme devotion and loyalty that was truly enviable. I loved this series so much!🥰🌃🦋

i think this scene is great, she never learned how to properly care for her daughter. She let her insecurities as a mother and a wife get in the way, she acted as if the flawed character of her daughter was a reflection of her own flaws. She thought that her daughter needed discipline and because she wasn't there to discipline her daughter, then that's why she turned out that way, but her daughter needed a mom more than anything. She tried to solve this problem the same way she taught her sons and the same way she trained her soldiers, at the end of the day she taught her daughter well... as a soldier ... as a citizen at the service of the empire, she taught her that duty is more important than family.

I cried more for the scene where child niaonaio eats the broken candy from the floor....child suffered so much and that mother started finding faults the second she lied her eyes on her.... didn't even hug her and ask how she was doing...nor spoke with her...on the same night she hit her too ..🤧

What makes this scene so moving is there are no words spoken after they arrive at the palace other than the mother shouting Niao Niao. Instead we have a very beautiful piece of music been played and the words to the song on the screen and every word is like Niao Niao wrote them to make them understand. Her emotions are dead she is suffocating in her own grief and misery the mother did some bad things but what was missing was the deep bond that a mother has for her children because of the lies told to her she left her baby girl to what she thought were safe people. The one person Niao Niao loved more than anything was the Empress the Empress gave her what her mother should have and this lies the problem her mother is military through and through duty, order, discipline, obedience. Trying to put them on her daughter was wrong she should have been showered with love and attention from the very people who abandoned her duty or not she was their daughter. NOT A SOLDIER.

honestly I feel bad for her for the fact that miscommunicated her feelings but not too much, because EVERYONE told her how harsh she was being, everytime she did something they would tell her to take it easy but she refused. I love this scene because the mom finally gets it finally understands that the daughter she wanted NN to be was never going to be NN and that the on standing in front of her was a broken shell of her daughter destroyed by the man she loved I can understand why she would let the ML back into her life but her mother I don’t think she will ever be able to forgive her and no one should fault her and even if she does forgive her that doesn’t always mean that she will want the mom in her life my own father is abusive and I forgave him in order to say “I won’t let you hurt me anymore u mean nothing to me” so I feel like that may be why I’m this scene NN seems to have forgiven her mother she is letting her go and won’t let her be hurt by her any longer

@@maharmibhattacharya4327 believe me it took me a really long time too I was so angry and whenever anyone told me I need to forgive I saw it as them letting him get away with everything he did to me but then one day I just was so tired of being angry that I asked my mom for help and she said if u can’t tell him how you’ll feel to get closure do a monologue since ur an actor and that speaks to u so for weeks, months, a year whenever I felt the need to tell a story of how horrible he was when I was alone I did to help me process and then one day I felt the need to say something to him specifically and so I did I poured out my heart and soul to the idea of telling him and then suddenly I felt that I could finally say the words I had so resented “I forgive you” and I kid u not it felt like a string that had tightly wrapped around my heart connecting me to him had snapped and after that I cried like Niagara Falls because it was 20 years worth of pain and sorrow all just coming out and me allowing myself to finally grieve and know that he won’t hurt me anymore because he isn’t important anymore that why I love this drama as I feel so much connection to NN as I feel like we r very similar so this drama really made me cry sometimes as it brought me back to why I left my dad behind sorry for the long rant but I’m glad my words helped u 😁 and I hope u have a wonderful day

Apathy hurts ppl like these infinitely more then hatred. Hatred means they still have(some more then others)control over you in a sense. Apathy means they're nothing, not even a thought anymore. It took me 40yrs to get to this point with everyone on my side of my family, especially my Mother. I fell on my path many times and when I couldn't walk anymore I crawled, when I couldn't crawl anymore I wore my fingers to the bone struggling towards freedom. I just knew if I gave up I wouldn't have the strength to ever fight back again.

this part of the drama.. I felt no pity for her mother. The way she treated Niao Niao from the time she returned from the war or wherever .. till she felt like it. In my mind... the mother deserved the Karma. Niao Niao went to spend her time with the person who gave her that motherly love and affection & educated her without harshness. Every child is different ... they have different personalities. some learn easy, some are stubborn. At the end of the day ... they are their own person ... with their own personality... NOT TO BE COMPARED TO ANOTHER.

Looking at the scene again where you didn't realize when watching it the first time is the symbolicness of the closing of the doors is the main character is standing in one end in her mother is standing at the other very poignant. Did everybody get that subtle closing her eyes to her to her mothers plea for forgiveness. This is what made this series so special. The different scenes captured every moment of what they were trying to say without using to many word. Totally genius performance.

It is very telling that as those doors close, after being under the tutelage of the Empress and blossoming into an amazing young woman with manners fit for a royal court, she doesn't tip her head to her mother, doesn't bow, doesn't curtsy; she gives her mother no respect as a daughter would/should, and no respect even for being an elder or even a general. She merely gives her mother what her mother has always insisted upon and demanded of her - absolute obedience. You reap what you sow. Mother wanted a perfect statue of a daughter who would obey like any soldier under her command and that's exactly what stood facing her as the doors closed. A courageous, fearless, emotionless, closed off woman who never felt she belonged anywhere or was genuinely cared for by anyone who didn't have an ulterior motive other than the Empress. Even the starkness of the Palace didn't faze her because he entire life has been stark - her physical needs weren't met, her social needs weren't met and her emotional needs weren't met - the gray palace against the gray skies and the gray ground won't be a problem for her: she's spent her entire life in that grayness and risen above it all by herself by surviving on her guts, intuition, cleverness and creativity. As long as she can be with the Empress, this young lady will continue to thrive. I'm not sure her mother has learned her lesson: I think her mother is lost in the moment of suddenly realizing her daughter has an ally the mother can't bully, can't control, can't influence, can't punish, can't shame, insult or humiliate, and can't best. I don't think she's repentant at all: she's throwing herself a pity party because her pet project for her chronic bullying and public degradation has slipped her collar and leash and has finally claimed her own freedom - a freedom in a palace all others consider a dungeon and death sentence. Mother is just realizing there is no turning back from that and a screamed, single "I'm sorry" just isn't enough; too much damage and pain of all kinds inflicted over too long a time by too many - mother is just one more in a long line of those who hurt her intentionally and Niao Niao is done with them all.

Honestly though, why would she *want* to go back to a home where she is constantly berated for 'not being good enough' or 'not being as good as your cousin' from her own mother who abandoned her at birth and waltzed in 15 years later and only found faults with her daughter that she was happy to voice in public. The mum is a bully and the dad is a coward who plays both sides and never really stands up for his daughter but comforts her when her mother is done with her. Her grandmother treats her even worse than her mother, somehow, the only people who loved her from the outset were her brothers who haven't appeared to have seen her much growing up but seem to love and cherish her unconditionally but were largely scattered around the country most of the time. So why would she give up one of the only people (the empress) who treated her as another daughter and cherished all the things her mother hated about her? Why does the mother seem so desperate to have her daughter back because she's at risk of losing her for good? Honestly it comes off less that she realises her daughters worth and more as not wanting to lose what's left of the hold she has on her daughter. I want to believe the mother realised what she had done, but up to this point she is so proud and self-righteous in her handling of her daughter that I'm not sure I believe that she suddenly had a lightning-bolt moment. I hope I'm wrong and the mother gets her head out of her ass, but she seems too full of herself as 'the great generals battle hardened wife' to truly ever bend to accommodate or acknowledge fault to anyone, let alone her daughter. I mean in theory, the mother got everything she wanted; the perfect daughter (the niece) and the troublemaker is no longer a risk to their families 'honour'. Honestly if you take out how greedy the grandmother is, she and the wife have almost the exact same treatment towards the sons and daughter which given how 'bad' the grandmother is portrayed is shameful.

finally a c drama that relates to me, my mom always think i am unmannered, unmatured, not studyhard ,always stay with phone ,i am sad that after being her daughter she still dont know me not even 1%, she is perfect since her childhood she wants me to be perfect like her too she dont know how much i studies she even dont know what i want to be in the future i want to tell all the parents that sometimes words and actions done by parents can hurt us kids too even 1 word can so be careful with the words you use , you can scold but dont break us with that use that to motivate us only thing i want from my mom is ...trust that she dont have to me at all😮‍💨😔 😥

Sometimes? All the time what a parent says to their child affects them to the core, parents are children’s first person they trust and look up to learn from and everything. Parents should only be parents if they know they can truly love their child and shouldn’t have weird expectations on them and dislike them if they don’t turn out how they think they should.

I loved this drama, every character stayed true to their original mould - did not change till the end , just matured - like the general was ruthless fighter throughout , Niaoniao was impetuous and strong willed till the end , her mother understood the true worth of her daughter and what abandoning her felt like when Niaoniao went back to the Palace! and some got their well deserved punishments ; though I did wonder often how many layers of clothing it was that they ( esp the ladies) wore and who washed all the edges of the flowing robes plus how many hours did it take for their hair to get done LOL

Everyone are blaming mother but her father is worst too. He loved her but never stood for her. He only acted good and pushed mother the entire blame. He had so many chances to strictly stop his wife from that treatment to NN. But he jz stood by. He is like a comedic character so everyone r not even blaming him but he is useless. So put blame on parents not jz mom.. The way NN easily forgot mother and replaced her with empress because of grudge but couldn't do the same even after 5 yrs with zisheng proves the difference. Zisheng showered her with her when he is available and abandoned her for her sake. Mother abandonment is different because she left without spending any time showing love.. So she couldn't replace him with anyone like she did to her mother with empress

I disagree. Shaoshang father did talk to his wife on the way she was treating his daughter but the mother had a thick head and wanted to do her own thing. The father understood NaioNaio much faster than the mother and accepted her for who SHE is. On the other hand her mother wanted to turn her into something that she would be proud of,a duplicate of Yang Yang. Naio Naio finally figure it out and bounce. The Emperor ,Empress, plus Concubine Yue Accepted her for who she is and ShaoSheng became a better person and finally matured into the person she is.

NN has always been a simple girl: she is a mirror. She treats others as they treat her. She showed kindness to those who were kind to her. Every time she learned and progressed, it was under someone who taught her softly. She learned how to love and trust from her aunt, she learned responsibility and the hardships of war from a female soldier, and she learned etiquette and duty from the Empress. There were times when her mother would defend her against others and times when her mother was soft to her, like when she was feeling conflicted about her engagement to LBY and her mother said she would support her whatever her decision was. In those moments, they synced up and connected beautifully.

In the book, Shaoshang says ‘it’s too late to try now’. The director shows the death of things with closed doors throughout the series. Similar toWangLing,this scene is the death of shaoshangs relationship with her mother. They get on better after,but in this scene, it’s the death of everything she was before. Daughter,lover, etc. In this moment, she is dead and all that is left for her is duty to the only person who never mistreated her.

As a person who lives the same lifestyle as what both Lusi and Li’s characters in this drama are, and as a person who studies history, I feel for both mother and daughter. At least Li came out of her shadow and realizes her mistakes and redeemed herself after five long years in the palace. I’m may not be Chinese, but I’m still Asian, and I know very well where a mother stands at times. What counts is that Li realized how much she should open herself up and better herself for the future, that was her redemption.

Li did a fantastic job as she realized that NN going into a cold palace meant that her daughter would and could die there with the Empress. A cold palace might as well be a grave and the shutting of the doors was like the closing of a coffin lid. NN would be dead to the mother, as if she had really died. The palace meant forever. NN would be lost there forever. She would never come home to visit, never send gifts or communications. Nothing. That hit the mom hard at that moment. She had been jealous of the Empress, but now NN is willing to die within the Empress's palace, that's hard to deal with. I believe the mom thought she had all the time in the world until she didn't. Losing to the palace was a death knell.

I really wanted the moment that Niao Niao gets out of the carriage and sees her mother came to the gate for her to see her and then walk away before the gates close. It would have been a great mirror to when her mother heard her crying, stopped and then walked forward. I wanted it to be this sort of silent, "you chose duty over family and I'm doing the same."

This is what happens when the family scapegoat and whipping boy or girl leaves and becomes free. I truly loved NiaoNiao because I went thru(obviously differently because of well reality)I went thru so many of the same things. I was blessed because I found my freedom in a good, loyal, loving husband and the best revenge...no vengeance, was to become the happy woman she would/could never be. I realized I lost my Mother long long ago and maybe I never had her to begin with. Family is what and who you choose it to be, blood doesn't mean love. My husband's family is my family. The Grandparents who raised me and instilled my values, morals, and inner strength were my family. Don't wait your whole life sacrificing your soul one tiny piece at a time because at the end you loose it and become like the very ppl who wronged you.

No sympathy for mother at all. She was never a parent to NN. Came back and thought NN was supposed to fall in line. She did, said, and treated NN horribly, and NOW she realizes her mistake. Queen was more of a parent to NN than her actual mother ever was. She gave her love, guidance, and support. That's a mother.

Right here in this scene it shows that parents are not right every time in everything they need to consider their childs feeling too, she was wrong from the beginning she should've taught her with patience and love after all they came back after so many years , she was a new baby when she left her, she was bound to do that but when she came back it was her duty to treat her well...not everything can be solved with force , but many people here they r saying she deserve this pain but she never wanted to hurm niao niao , it was also new for her to raise a daughter, but what i liked about her mother is later she realised her mistake and said sry to her daughter, everyone one's in a life they make mistakes, but what important is to learn from mistake, and to never repeat this mistake, if u repeat it it's no longer a mistake Some parents never realise their mistakes, let alone realising mistakes they never consider their child's feelings, and they never support their child's dreams once in a life i also want to be brave like niao niao

Actually sometimes parents are also wrong. If a child tries to tell them this then child is called as unfilial and rude but that's wrong. No one is always right. I know it's hard for them to raise us but still they should also consider about our feelings 😢

I am a mother ,a strict one too, though these r fictional characters i have no sympathy for the mother here ...Her initial punishing, humiliating behaviour towards SS in public ,showing favouritism etc i was angry but still not so angry that I wished Ss disowns her mom .. For me the last straw was her "AGAIN" slapping SS in public just because SS said if her family dies she too wants to die...whatever might be the reason she could have told her in better way to make her understand why she needs to be alive instead of slapping ,that was the moment I hated her n felt even if SS forgives her after yrs their relationship won't be the same n the mother deserves it,This mother in jail was also so concerned about yang yang ,that time she has no hesitation to use SS good name with the majesty n when Yang said she will be with them come what may she was so touched n softened immediately if only she could have done the same to her daughter at that time i would have been sympathetic to her....Her lamentations that SS is considerate about her majesty's feeling not her parents n her other jealous blah blah r just that Jealous blah blah nothing more ...Her majesty deserves all the love n attention SS showered on her
