"It's Too Quiet" The Early Morning Television of 9/11/2001

Fashion Week was just getting underway in New York. George W. Bush went for an early morning jog in Florida. Iraq shot down a Predator drone. The weather was still summer and perfect. Until 8.46 AM, September 11, 2001 was another morning in America.

The last time any American was ever able to say that date so casually. I live abroad and whenever I hear September 11th (a date everyone around me doesn't remember), I think "oh wow... it's already that date again...wow... it's been twenty years..."

People who were around back then will tell you it soon became even quieter, with people glued to their TV set. Very little traffic on the roads no planes in the sky. Everywhere other than Ground Zero, DC, and Pennsylvania, it was like someone had pressed the pause button on the world.

It was TOO quiet. Frank Culbertson, commander of the International Space Station, called Mission Control: "Hey Houston, what happened? "We were expecting to hear from you. "Did you guys fall asleep or something? Mission Control: "Frank, we're having a bad day here on the ground." When asked what it was, the controllers in Houston filled the crew in as to what had happened. A long silence followed. And the realization set in as to what had taken place that fateful day.

These clips together are just to creepy. The references to american airlines, 911, iraq, lines in front of the capitol, the area around new york dubbed ‘as nice as can be’, the reference to ‘bombings’ at pearl harbour, the constant repeating of what a nice day it was going to be, and most chillingly, the man at the beginning remarking how quiet it was that morning “too quiet. Hosts with innocent smiles on their faces, showing other people with innocent smiles on their faces, even fussing about many audience members wearing purple at once, all while the clock was slowly ticking, the tragedy was unfolding in more and more horror. Too creepy. The 2000s were going to start that day.

I'll say it now, and I'll say it again, 9/11 was the day, no, the MOMENT the 90's died. Yeah, the literal 1990s ended in 2000, but the spirit, the energy--that carefree America that was all about technology, finance, and fashion, ceased to exist. From that moment on, we became a paranoid state, always watching our backs as a country, focused on strong Defense. Terrified of another attack. A pivotal moment in World History.

Anyone old enough to remember that day will remember how ironically beautiful that day was. Clear skies, perfect 70 degrees on the east coast, and so serene. I’m from Atlanta and Hartsfield-Atlanta airport is and was then, the busiest airport in the world. After the attack, the skies around Atlanta were clear, blue and eerily quiet. Downtown had been evacuated bc there was a rumor they were going to target the CNN center on Marietta street. Didn’t happen obviously, but that is what it felt like that day: waking up to a beautiful clear September day, yet it ended with friends and families huddled around the TV, afraid another attack would happen at any time, and knowing that the future we thought we knew was gone and we had no idea what to expect. Oh, and my birthday is September 12. I tried so hard no to complain, even though ALL bday plans were canceled, lol. But in hind sight, that memory has practically faded.

No, thats a logical fallacy, let me explain: Let's say you have a variable that is fluctuating (going up and down) like patients in a hospital. If that variable is below average, the chances are it will increase back towards the average over time, hense overall the average remains constant. Since you only say "It's too quite" when it is far below the average, it will almost always be followed by a significant increase. Example: a hospital receives an average of 40 patients an hour, on one hour the hospital only receives 10 patients, the probability of getting as low as 10 patients an hour is very low, therefore it is very likely the next hour will have significantly more patients.

@@TobiasTHolmes does that just mean that its just logical to assume that their’s a calm before the storm instead of instinctual?
@TobiasTHolmes
@TobiasTHolmes 3 жыл бұрын
@@thanalincoln Not really, a particularly low value is likely to be followed by a value significantly higher than it, because the low value is so far below the average, however the probability of a low and high value is exactly the same relative to the average. There is likely to be a high value relative to the previous value after a low value, is not the same as a high value is likely to be prefaced by a low value (the second is wrong, because the probability of each value does not change, it is relative to the low value the the next calue is likely to be high, it is not necersarily high in it's own right) Think of a bell curve, the y-axis is probability, and the x-axis is the value, this highest point on the curve is the average, this curve does not change. Lets say the values are 0 to 1 and 0.5 is the average, the curve reaches 0 probability at 0 and 1, so these are infinitely unlikely. If you get a value of 0.0001 that is incredibly low, this means most of the bell (almost all the probabilities) would be significantly higher than it, and therefore the probability of getting something significantly higher than it is incredibly high, even if that significantly higher number is just 0.4, which would still be little low but quite close to the average, and therefore quite likely. There is not a higher probability of getting 0.99 though, asuming the fluctuation of the value over time is effectivly random, these events are independant, this means they don't effect the probability of the next event, so the chance of getting 0.99 is the same after 0.8 or 0.2.

One thing we learn in life is: whenever it is too quiet, an awful event is about to happen. The weather (for most of the nation) was too nice. All the morning fluff, and quiet weather reports, gave way to breaking news. It was as if any of the fluff segments never happened. I was just starting high school. It took until November to finally start turning around. Each day, we had silence, before the Pledge. At that time, a year ago (2000), we would've never thought something like would happen. 2000 was as good as life got, in modern times. Things were never the same after 9/11/01, no matter close.

When September 11th was just another day. Really makes you think how any random day you wake up, and think nothing of it, could one day never be seen as a normal day ever again.

Well, duh. Not even necessarily on a national or international scale, just for your own life that is true. You can get up tomorrow and get hit by a car and your life you had so far just ends like that. It's not healthy to obsess over could-be's though. We all live in good faith that the world as we know it won't end today, and when it does, after all, well...we'll find ways to deal with that too. Humanity has been hit with so many natural disasters, wars, terror attacks, etc. that all felt like they came out of nowhere, but we are a pretty resilient species ;)

I mean that’s basically how it was a year ago. This time we were all just hearing about some virus in China, not realizing a month later it would change the world as we know it

It’s so chilling that the last ever completely normal TV broadcast said “A long road to freedom” at 8:45; one minute before the first plane hit..
