They do that in the NBA. The refs have been conditioned to blow the whistle whenever they see contact, and offensive players know more often than not that whistle will be against the defense, so they create the contact even if it adversely affects the ability to get a good shot attempt up. The game has gotten worse because they are training bad habits into players.

All you have to do is see what has happened to some of Brady’s former receivers. He threw LOW to the little guys. I think this all stems from the idea that the offense is the "good guys" and the defense is the "bad guys". So we think of the defense as the antagonists and want to penalize them for everything.

75% of the time I see a targeting flag... Im left asking.... What was the defender supposed to do different that wouldn't either put his own health at risk or risk missing the tackle or allowing a catch? And there is never a good answer because the answer is nothing. Most of these of these penalties can't be avoided without the defender being asked to risk himself physically or risk his job/teams success.
@auzieten
@auzieten 2 жыл бұрын
So let me get this straight... you see a defender launch helmet first into another player's head (targeting) and you ask yourself how they could have done it differently that wouldn't put them at risk? You mean like not leading with your helmet against a defenseless receiver? I think the answer is pretty easy considering a vast majority of tackles are made without a penalty. Launching helmet first into other players is the very definition of putting your health at risk. And if you have to target the receiver's head in order to prevent them from catching a pass... then you screwed up. That's like saying, "He had to grab onto his arms and pull them down or else the receiver would have caught the ball! Why is that pass interference, is he just supposed to let him catch it?!" lol... good lord.

Brady is such a smart guy, loved he said this out loud. It’s not a safety’s job to protect a wide receiver who’s running into his area! It’s his job to destroy that receiver and make him drop the ball. Yet he’ll get penalized for doing his job, and doing it well. While the mistake was the quarterback who threw the ball into that area, the QB who endangered his own player! And now will be rewarded!

A very interesting perspective when it's coming from a player who's career has benefited from rule changes made to protect and prolong the careers of quarterbacks. The game has changed so much due to these adjustments that it is impossible to compare players in today's game to those that played in the 70's and 80's when it was a much rougher game.

This is why Tom Brady is a brilliant competitor: By starting this conversation, which makes a ton of sense, Tom could literally influence a rule change within the next few years. He could become a spokesperson along with over half the players who are or have ever been in the NFL. 2-3 years from now the rule changes to an offensive penalty (defenseless hits or something). Tom Brady then secures every record he holds as QB forever because even if by some miracle another "Tom Brady" comes along that guy will never have numbers like Brady (or Manning or Breeze, etc.) in any category. It's like leaving mines along the marathon trail. He is and always will be the GOAT. Fly him to Canton the day he retires.

funny in Rugby when a pass is sent to a player that get the receiver hit they call it a "Hospital Pass", as in its going to get the player sent to the Hospital. When that happens its not generally seen as a bad tackle unless its too high etc.

Tom Brady has always had this mindset. In the 2nd superbowl against the Giants, the drop from Wes Weller. Brady saw a hit coming from the Giants safety. That's why he threw the ball in a way that Wes could make the catch and not get hit. Then Wes Weller goes and drops the ball.
