This week I continue my cruise up the Ashby Canal in search of Bins.... I moor at Shackerstone and meet Sara who talks about the amazing charity Forces Vets Afloat that her son Jake volunteers for and I receive an amazing Pirate Gift. I'm also joined at my mooring by one of my favourite historic boats Whitby which was built by Yarwoods of Northwich in 1937.

Thank you so much for watching. If you are new here, I'm Heidi and I live aboard my Narrowboat The Rum Wench and travel the UK's Canals in search of Adventure. After selling my house to experience an alternative lifestyle I bought a canal boat and a camper van which as a solo female who loves to travel, gives me the best of both worlds. I have recently got myself a new addition to the crew, a fabulous companion - my little rescue dog Bonny who is an absolute joy. I also work full time off grid from my tiny home and trade at canal festivals as The Pirate Boat.

Fab video Heidi, thanks so much! I always wanted to be an archaeologist but never got past being told to dig the garden 😄 Later I wanted to run a pub and did so for 12 years. Loved it. Now I'm a full time unpaid carer for my poor old mum who's got dementia. Toughest job ever. Your videos help me stay cheerful xxx

I always say 'what is the rush' and everyone looks at me weirdly. The world is in a rush yet they end up getting there the same time I do. I didn't have any goals growing up I was told that I needed to go to college. Got a degree and realized I liked working with my hands. Moved to the sticks since I was 25. I have a small farm and enjoy myself every day for the past 49 years. Nice that you enjoy life as much as I do.

Wanted to join the RN but parent wouldn't sign the form when I left school. Ended up teaching, beginning in prisons and ended up doing woodwork with adults with special educational needs. Main achievement was helping a partially sighted wheelchair user make a coffee table. Very rewarding way to spend my time.

When I was young, I wanted to be an archaeologist and explore ancient Egypt. I was fascinated by the pharaohs, pyramids, hieroglyphics, and a culture that managed to survive for more than 3,000 years. My parents sat me down and talked me out of pursuing a career in archaeology for many very logical reasons. I ended up becoming a teacher for almost 25 years, and really loved it. If I couldn't go explore Egypt myself, I could inspire other young minds to love it, and maybe they would become the Egyptologist that made the most extraordinary discovery of our time!

There are hundreds of kids actively working within communities to improve better well being .. my own daughters, serving in the military and within the civil service help coordinate such projects, we have to remind ourselves that the media promote the other side of life, sadly the good side is overshadowed by this, thanks to channels like this and other inside social media we get to hear of it, it never fails to amaze me that we are slow to recognise the brilliance of our younger generation. They’re are out there… take care.

@@thoughtsonnarrowboatingwit3882 You are quite right and I love it that many kids are community minded, I know quite a few myself. Wouldn't it also be great if the taggers etc could also be diverted into community projects and learn skills. ..... and I wish the media would show more positive stories and articles I don't think that they would regret it. The saying is bad news sells more but have they tried good news? Take care =-)

I just wanted to be a Mum. Achieved that and have amazing kids (grown up now). Then loved helping as a parent at school. I left school thinking I was not bright ... after helping the kids who were struggling in the classroom and loving it I thought maybe I could try teaching and couldn't believe it when I was accepted into university. Long story short, loved teaching hated the never ending rules and regulations, round peg, square hole (shudder), I wanted to teach not do endless paperwork and meetings. Now work for myself tutoring kids who need a lift in confidence and skills and loving it. Take care girls =-)

I always wanted to be in 'showbiz'. Started dancing lessons at 4 years old...qualified with honours at 16. The smell of the grease paint & the dazzle of the footlights beckoned. Summer seasons, Panto's to gain experience & then the West End & Television, wonderful times with fabulous people but it is a very short career span so retired from the stage in my early 30's to follow my second dream of being a Flight Attendant...flew for over 12 years, wonderful times but moved from the 'air' to the sea to complete my circle of dreams of life onboard a Cruise Ship. Wow, I have been so very lucky. Now happily retired with my 2 gorgeous rescue dogs Archie & Winnie ( my babies, my world ). Would I do it all again, in a heartbeat. Never give up on your dreams & always believe in yourself. Much love from me & the 'babies'. We love your channel & gorgeous Bonnie. X

16 hrs to upload... OMG. Your humor, talents, music and dedication... so amazing! Thank you. .....rum drink from Paypal on it's way... cheers. Maybe some parts of this ditty will get a smile. Patreons 'Bill and Dona' (your San Diego crew) Heidi, you're a gem, in this world so wide, I'm hoping this ditty, by your side, will abide, So take a moment, dear, let its essence fly, And maybe, just maybe, some parts will catch your eye. In an English cut, where the waves did roll, Lived two brave souls with a heart of gold, Heidi and Bonny, a dynamic pair, With a thirst for adventure, and wind in their hair. We're the narrowboat pirates, sailin' down the cut, With a trusty crew of scallywags, we'll never be shut! Our vessel's long and slender, painted black and bold, We're searchin' for treasures, hidden stories to be told! Heidi is the captain, with eyes so keen, She steers the ship with a fearless mien, Bonny, her first mate, strong and true, Together, they'd face whatever they'd pursue. Locks and bridges, a part of the quest, Challenges faced, but they knew they were blessed. With teamwork and laughter, they overcame all, Heidi and Bonny, having a ball. So if you ever spot Heidi and Bonny afloat, Raise a glass of rum, and join the merry boat. For yoho narrowboat pirates, sailing with glee, On a watery adventure, as wild as can be!

I've had probably one of the more varied careers - worked in a Circus (ring foreman/trapeze rigger and performer), then worked as a croupier in casinos for 13 years, working my way up to managerial level. Got tired of that, went to university and got a Bsc(Hons) in an engineering/manufacturing degree, and then went on to work in IT support before finally working in colleges and secondary schools as an HLTA for a couple of decades. Now retired and enjoying my astronomy when the weather permits. What did I want to be when I was a kid? A geologist!

What a great charity, I hope they do well.👍 I wanted to be an artist "not a proper job" or indeed an astronaut which apparently "wasn't for girls" according to my career advisor at school... ended up in the late 1980s as a stubborn spotty teenager joining the WRNs instead. Luckily this was just the right time as soon after we became ordinary sailors and went off to sail the world. Did that for 12 years then left the RN and came ashore to be an engineer for 20 more years. Now I potter about on a poultry farm part time and lark about with my Jack Russell and motorhome. Just enjoy the easy life now, glad to have done these things but still wonder about what it would be like in space. 🤣

Remember, you asked, LOL! When I was a child, I wanted to be an architect, because I absolutely loved engineering drawings and blueprints. Then during High School as a teenager, I thought I wanted to be the kind of artist who does cover art for Science-Fiction and Fantasy books. Even then I was exploring my talents. I was in the concert band & marching band, won a school award for my art, and because I lived on a farm I became a pretty fair mechanic and inventor. I thought about joining the Air Force and becoming an airplane mechanic, then opening an automobile garage when I got out. But, the Vietnam War ended the year before I graduated, and my family decided that I should go to college instead of going into the military. So I went to art school at the University of Georgia. I majored in Interior Design, but also took all sorts of drawing and painting classes too. Turns out, that I ran out of money for college after two and a half years. So I got a job in a local factory to save enough money to go back to college. One of my housemates played electric guitar, and he convinced me to buy a bass guitar and play back-up for him. I did the garage band thing for several years, and even had a recording studio in a couple of my apartments. I played bass, synths, lead & rhythm guitars, messed around with a violin, but my best instrument was the studio mixing boards. Then I started writing my own SF&F stories, and I was horrible, LOL! But I got better. So now, I am 65 years old, three months away from retiring from the factory and I have a few novels and short stories in various books on Amazon, with several more at my publisher now. I also have nine albums of music over on Bandcamp--mostly composed in my computer, but some are from the garage band days. I've been asked to compose the soundtrack to an animated film an online friend from the Netherlands is drawing. I have a few paintings in three private galleries in the Southeastern US. I'm going to get to do cover art for two of the books I've written. I've built every bookcase in my house, the entertainment center in the living room, my dining room table & its bench seats, framed in and screened the front porch, built a few computers back in the day, been married three times, raised 5 kids I only met when I married their mothers, worked on my own cars, motorcycles & pick-up trucks. I run the internet's oldest still-extant SF&F amateur writing website that has gifted the world with over 500 new writers--which is about to turn 27 years old! At conventions, I hang out with people whose names are on the 13,000 books on my bookshelves, retired NASA rocket scientists, writers, publishers, editors, costumers, vendors, fans... So, what am I? I'm just this guy, you know? I am what I am and that's all what I am, as Popeye said in his cartoons. I'm a writer, a composer, a painter, a carpenter, a factory laborer, a computer geek, a step-Dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband--but mostly, I'm just me. --Dan

@@TheNarrowboatPirate, and yet Heidi, I envy your life on the canals. You do so much, see so much, and live so much. Sure, it isn't always perfect--too much rain, not enough rain to keep the canals filled, leaky and heavy lock gates, shallow waters for your deep-drafted girl "The Rum Wench," frozen moorings in Wales, Bonny needing to learn how to interact with other pets on the canals, single-handing when you need to make speed to a venue to trade... Yet, you seem to keep an outlook that is a joy to behold, and find fun in every circumstance you face. Your music is awesome. You're as real as real can be. I raise my glass of Kraken to you in toast! "There was a boat Captain named Heidi, 'The Rum Wench' she called her home. Through fair and foul weather she traveled, Down Brittan's canals she did roam. With many a filmed adventure, Her fans, countless numbers did join, Her toasts of a tit of good rum, 'Just wet the lips," she'd intone. So sing of this grand voyage, through canal or river or fen, But beware of the famed 'Back Passage,' Lest invited, you'll never get in!" LOL! I couldn't resist, Heidi. My ditty is long but well meant. If it gives you a giggle I'm happy. I'll count it as time quite well spent. --Dan

I attended the same primary school where my mum was a teacher. One day at the tender age of 5 I was waiting in the library for mum to finish whatever she was doing in her classroom after school finished for the day and the headmistress started to talk to me. Just as mum arrived along the corridor the headmistress asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up. Mum just arrived into earshot as I answered "I want to retire and play croquet" The headmistress was amused. Mum was mortified. Nobody (including me) knew where I got the notion from - or how I even knew about croquet. My granddad had just retired, which could explain the ambition to retire, but not the croquet. On an earlier occasion again while waiting for mum to finish in her classroom for some reason I sang the "Lilly the Pink" (by The Scaffold) song to the headmistress - word perfect. Dad had a recording of it on his reel to reel player and somehow in just a couple of times of him playing it I had it by heart. Again mum was mortified. Not the song for a 4 to 5 year to know apparently, let alone sing to a headmistress.

I did join the Army at 17, and became a cartographer. I continued to work with timber as a hobby. I always made things for our children from timber ie billycarts, games etc. at the young age of 50 I studied to be a home designer. Woohoo! In sixth class they asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. From watching old English movies I wanted to be an “eccentric” I’m proud to say that as a modern day version I think I’ve achieved that goal. The second choice I wrote was a professional skateboarder. That wasn’t a thing then so I was playing it safe to be honest. I did skate for years though. I also learnt to play several instruments quite badly 🤣 because I couldn’t choose just one 🙂 I really wanted to be an artist and I studied for that at college. The number of people supporting themselves that way is not large, so I went back and did a business and technology diploma. Then did community work for several years which I really enjoyed. Well that’s my answer. I hope you’re well, I’ll see you next week. Take care and all the best to you, Bonny and to your mum and dad. Eve 🙂🐿🌈❤️

As a teen I used to watch Mogul The Trouble Shooters. It was about the international oil industry and guys jet setting (showing my age there) around the world to fix things. That was my idea of the best possible life imaginable. And fantastically lucky that is exactly what I ended up doing. I loved it, lots of exotic places, fascinating work, amazing people and more, not to mention the fantastic money. I started in 1974 and retired in 2017. Never out of work but in later years with different companies every few years. I still get opportunities to work, because almost no one else wanted the type of work, and very few of us got the opportunity to get into it. I consider myself to be very lucky.

I knew at 10 or 11 that I wanted to be a chemist. I got my degree and worked for 44 years for 5 different companies as a chemist until I retired 4 years ago. Three of those companies I worked as a Colour Chemist for coloring of ceramics and plastics. Two of the companies were ennvironmental companies that cleaned up gas and coal fired power plant flu gases. My dad was the last of 6 generations of miners, many of them worked as coal miners. His grandfather was born in Ysceifiog, Flintshire, Wales, moved to South Wales, worked as a coal miner, then moved to the USA. I was the first in my family to break from mining and receive a degree. In my last job, I worked for a company that cleans up gas and coal fired generation plants around the world: North & South America, Europe, and SE Asia.

Oh I forgot. I wanted to be either a famous singer, artist, writer, or help people by being a doctor, pharmacist, or research scientist. I did a Science degree, and MSc, but ended up poorly. So I worked in the Civil service in taxes until I was medically retired in 2018 aged 45. So now I'm an embroidery student at the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace. We get to wander around when the Palace is closed to the public and study on one of the old grace and favour apartments. I run a small group on Facebook teaching people basic blackwork embroidery and provide information about the animals we stitch as an aid for home schooling parents. I also joined the rock choir, and I love it. Made fab friends, and I get to carry on singing. Xx

Ha! I love that " have to be careful that I don't split me difference" ... I'll have to watch out for that too and share it with my friends over here on the northern Pacific Coast of America. You are wise! Eeek! 🙂 Love the sound of your engine. And of course all the canals and views. Oh, excellent questions to all of us! Hmmm, I just wanted to learn, to explore knowledge and understanding. I became a Paralegal for many years, then a diesel truck mechanic for many years, and then a Microsoft Computer Systems Engineer for many years ... and I've owned and captained two different boats for a total of 29 years cruising on Puget Sound and up into Canada ... and now I have a pickup truck and a 21-foot Escape Trailer Industries (Canada) trailer that I use to explore Washington and Oregon and British Columbia. I also own a home, but I love the trailer. Like you, I enjoy seeing what's around the next bend, and talking with people, and enjoying the wildlife and peace and quiet. Jake is extraordinary, we sure need more people like him. Wow, a 1937 boat! Spectacular. I owned a 1939 boat for 18 years so I understand a bit of the history and how much it means. Here's to Whitby! The canals you travel are gorgeous! I've been to England/Scotland twice in life ... next time I come over I'll be hiring a narrowboat, might just come find you, and will bring a big jug of rum. Cheers! "You Know Me" ... thank you for the ditty and the laugh. 🙂

I worked for State of Washington for 7 years, got married, and had a little girl. That kept me busy until she graduated college and got married, and I went to work at the WA State Legislature until I could retire.
