Hello everyone,
When I was a kid, my dad told me about the decline of manpower in traditional trades due to the industrialization and modernization of Japanese society. As a result, traditional products started to become outdated and forgotten. However, there are still young people who dedicate their entire careers to carrying on these traditions. We want to honor them as much as we can. That's why I decided to create a series of video shows about them and their work, using footage from my friends and myself.
Today, this video will be even more attractive because I have edited the script, rewritten the content, added new effects, incorporated new music, included new footage, and created a new piece titled: "It Takes Over 10 Years to Make the Amazing Long Bamboo Flutes."
Long Bamboo Flute: Shakuhachi
This time, our main character is Shakuhachi Craftsman Ohagi Yasuyoshi (大萩康喜さん) from Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. He was born in 1985.

It takes 10 years from harvesting the perfect bamboo trunk to producing a flute from that same piece of wood. The video showed the artisan harvesting new material/trunks, but the flute he was crafting later on was not the same piece of wood. It takes 8 to 10 years just to naturally cure the wood enough to be used as a musical instrument. You can kiln dry them quicker, but they become brittle and may crack or refuse to hold a consistent tone (thus the cheap, mass-produced knockoffs you find everywhere). Once the actual process of crafting the flute begins, it can take several weeks to a few months to finish one, allowing for building, lacquer drying, fine tuning, etc. This process, after the bamboo has been curing for 8 to 10 years, is what is shown in the video. This is an artisan working at a craft that has been passed down from generation to generation for literally thousands of years. It was a privilege to watch him work. Thank you for posting this.

Great video. I read several comments, especially directed against the title. I may be wrong but the title may have been chosen by someone whose native language is not english... I've been making shakuhachi for some years and believe me or not, the title in itself is right in many ways. Where I live bamboo needs to grow for 5 to 7 years to be compatible for shakuhachi making (I don't have Phyllostachys bambusoides or madake, so the duration may differ), depending on your weather, you will have to wait up to several years to have your bamboo correctly dryed. There're some ways to let it cure, the most known is the "aburanuki" process where you heat, with a coal powered oven, the bamboo right after the harvest in order to remove like 70% of the water contained in the bamboo. But you can also wait for this water to go away with time, 10 years in this case seem to be normal. Bamboo is like many materials, it has flaws. Waiting is a good way to avoid a cracked bamboo. The shakuhachi making shown in this video is the "top notch" shakuhachi : nakatsugi shakuhachi. You will need to master the dimensions to cut the bamboo and obtain the right size (1.8/2/2.2 shaku...) then you will have to master the art of urushi based paste, the "ji". Three kind of shakuhachi exist : - Ji-nashi (no ji inside) - Ji-mori (some ji is put inside the bore to correct the geometry and avoid the noisy sound produced when air flow bumps in the irregularities) - Jiari (the bore is completly corrected to have an optimal air flow). Urushi/ji don't dry, the main compound of urushi (urushiol) and its friend (laccase) react with the water contained in the air to harden. This process needs time and a bit of heat, to be quick, 70% humidity and 30-35°C. Urushi lacquer will change its color depending on the humidity in the muro box. Each step of ji paste will need 2-3 days to dry. All these different craftmanship need time to master, another meaning to the 10 years ? ;)

It seems likely that they are referring to the length of the drying process, and that if one were to start today it could theoretically take ten years before its finished. European luthiers often insist on wood that has been dried for 100 years. Obviously wood cut now is for future generations.

I made several bamboo flutes. I remember different people saying, I needed to do this, or that, as if they knew about making a flute. I would just ignore them, and continue as I was doing. In the end, the flutes always sounded perfect. I don't know where the skill came from, but it was deeply satisfying to hear them play, their first notes. Knowing they had new, and permanent lives as flutes.

His parents and grandparents left the material ready to be used for sure. This is hereditary, it passes from father to son in the same way as bonsai techniques and bonsai pots whose clay rests for decades! Eastern patience. What a marvel of work.

I think my favorite was watching the note perfecting! Tiny bit flat? Dremel! Back to the very EXPENSIVE orchestral tuner.... DEAD NUT!!!!! Takes blowing the note perfectly and to the thousandth of an inch tone hole sizes! That and the tweaked out face of the dude at the end when hitting some of those notes and wind amounts! That's pretty classic too, Haha! 40 plus years with music and woodworking love affair here, and I can say the craft here is off the chart! Unreal.

For forty-two years I was under the cruel tutelage of Pie-Might, the Tibetan master flute maker. He taught me the exquisite art of making the holes perfect. He really had to drill it into me.

Those bamboos grow separate from each other, our local bamboos grow in a bundle so digging up their roots is impossible lmao

What an astonishing level of craftsmanship...that you rarely see these days ...the Japanese have been meticulous for centuries in this kind of stuff. Think Samurai swords and their world renowned steel.The sad thing, these skills and crafts are a dying art form all over the world..and i fear that a few decades from now all this will be lost to 3D printing and robotic production lines...i so hope i am wrong....Peace.

Wow. I like this video. The technician laboured too hard to fix small small parts and to create sound in actual scale. I liked the scale tuner also. Cameraman wants to show very nicely that he tood video from severan angles. Love to see this video but if you give below english subtitle it would be easy to understand. *Konichiwa. Работа да поражает мастер, изделие нет, если канал весь зашпатлеван, режущий воздух язычек из полимера, проще сделать вообще всю из полимера, которая будет по звуку такая же, а может еще и лучше. Сам по себе знаю играл на блок флейтах дешевых за 350 р из пластика с хорошим звучанием и на дорогих за 1500 из дерева с лажей в тонах и отвратительным потоком воздуха по каналу. аутентично - да, рационально -нет.

he should have played the Theme from the show "Kung Fu" "when you can snatch the pebble from my hand it will be time for you to go" I have a fake one along with fake Samuari Swords on the wall of the Japanese tea room I built in the garden for my wife. It's just a 12 x 12 room with floor to ceiling glass panels that can be opened to make an open air room. My wife meditates, drinks her tea and does her plant stuff on the back outside wall, the rear has a roof overhang of about 6 ft over her planting tables. and she makes me turn over her compost pile since it caught on fire last year LOL These flutes look and sound awesome, I have one from when I was in grade school (at least I think it's a flute) My sister says it's a recorder? Well you blow into it and it has holes for your fingers that change ther tone and I can barely play the Grinch theme song "your a mean one - Mister Grinch"

turn on closed caption, then switch the language to auto-translate. from there choose which language you want. It isnt perfect, but works pretty good

When you click a video to see traditional Japanese craftsmanship and the guy break out drill presses and propane torches. Then assembles the flute with bondo and plastic. LMFAO!
