I was at the Brighton game in Philly last summer, everything you said about the tactics and speed at which we played was amazing. Despite the results and challenges to keep clean sheets this season, the one big praise has been how much we’ve improved going forward compared to even the “glory days” of just a few years ago when Jorginho was our top scorer for like 2 seasons straight💀

You have to say Enzo has been protected a lot this season. Gallagher and caicedo are far better together. I think this should be our base going into next season. Enzo needs to earn that shirt back for me he shouldn’t just be given it for his price tag

I think this has more to do with the types of players that have been on the field. When you have fullbacks like gusto and chilwell on the pitch with wingers like palmer and sterling, your wingers tend to cut inside and the fullbacks bomb down the pitch to hold the width and also cross into the box. However, you usually only push up with the fullbacks on one side at a time. When cucu and gusto were playing, you can see Poch was trying to continue this method but that is not cucurella's strength so often the attack would go down gusto's side. Now that gusto is out, we have shifted to holding the width with the wingers, sitting Gallagher and Palmer in the channels, inverting cucu to be a double pivot with Caicedo, and shifting to back three which suits Gilchrist is who a natural center back. Also, this allows Gallagher to push further up and press from the front without leaving Caicedo as the lone pivot. With the players we have currently available, this plays to everyone's strengths for the most part and that is why we are getting results. I think once Gusto is fit though, Poch will go back to pushing up the right side because gusto is amazing at it. Unfortunately, it will leave the midfield open again because Gallagher will still go forward to press from the front and Cucurella will have to shift to form a back three instead of inverting as part of a double pivot.

We can’t forget that pep was gunning for cucu, he’s a la masia graduate. Played higher up and in the middle while at getafe, played lcb of a back 3 at times for brighton. He is incredibly versatile and played well last season until he got tonsillitis if my memory serves correct, lost weight and looked off the pace. But my point is that if pep wanted him he obviously had a plan to develop him, who’s to say he wasn’t planning to play him in the same areas as he’s playing now. I love chillwell, but if we aren’t going to proceed with a back 5 I would sell him and do everything in our power to convince maatsen to fight for a place in this youth revolution! COYB

Pochettino made some subtle adjustments: Primarily played with 3 CB's. Used the energy and speed of the inverted Cucurella and an inside left shifted to center right Mudryk. Not wide but closer to the action. Mudryk initially helped with some defending. He had a strong first half especially the first 15 mins. But unnecessary dribbling and turnovers let him down. When we moved the ball quickly without too many touches, we looked fluid and dangerous. Biggest surprise was Madueke helping Gilchrist to manage Son/Johnson. Once again most of our threats were from the right side. As Cucurella and Mudryk shifted over, squeezing the spaces. Tottenham had several good opportunities in the box from crosses but failed to capitalize. They stepped their game up in the second half. Threw them off canter with our second goal. Palmer showed his on ball intelligence, knowing when to link up, dribble, pass, shoot, slow the game down, change direction. Chalobah heading in from a cross and Jackson fastest to react to a pinged free kick rebound to header home. Whole team effort fir the shutout. Great for the subs: Gilchrist, Casadei, Acheampong, Taurianinen. Taste of victory, London derby rivalry.

I think Enzo should gravitate more to be a 10, and Palmer works fantastic as a RW.

RJ and Cucurella will shuffle between forming a back 3, inverting to midfield or attacking down the wings for width depending on the play. I think when everyone is fit we can use a 433 with a CDM(Lavia/Ugochukwu) who can drop deep to form a back 3 while RJ push up as RWB and Cucurella inverts into midfield with Caicedo freeing up space for Enzo to move up into the LHS while the LW stay wide. Or Cucurella forms the back 3, Lavia and Caicedo form the Pivot with James high and Palmer infield as a 10. James can also invert pushing Enzo and Caicedo into the half spaces with the wingers keeping the width. The flexibility of the system will rely on the fitness of the players. Santos, Ugochukwu, Gallagher as rotation for Enzo, Lavia, Caicedo and loan Caicede to Starsburg. Nkuku, Mudryk, Carney LW, Palmer, Madueke, Carney RW. Nkuku and Jackson CF( keep Lukaku to save cost of not selling Gallagher and Chaloboa). Buy experienced CB, watch Chillwell fitness till January then decide on a sale. If we get Nico Williams we loan Mudryk to Starburg..

@Benson I'd love to see a tier list from you at the end of the season of maybe the top X results/performances on the season vs. The worst. I'm especially interested to see how many of the best results are came later in the season, like this one, versus earlier. You got to admit even though it was at home, this was a better performance than what we eeked out at Tottenham when they were down two men for both the games even though the score line was better then.

For me Cucu has to play the LDM kind of role , similar to what Trent does. He can be easily disposed by strong wingers if he play as LB. Poch should put his hand on Mudryk shoulder and help him to improve. His man management needs to improve.

To be fair, we all would've sold Cucurella in Jan. Poch has turned him into a Victor Moses like turnaround story. Dont need to be an elite manager to know pace on wings v Spurs high line would trouble them. Want to see more in game formation changes to suit team/opposition.

Injuries mean that almost every game has a different defence playing Lots of new players, new to Chelsea, new to London, New to U.K. Any manager would struggle to achieve success with those three issues. If Poch achieves 1. Chelsea scoring goals again ✔️2. Good cup performances ✔️ 3. European Qualification 🤔 then the season will have been a success despite the issues mentioned above.
