I had put this onto his KZfaq channel and wanted to share. Dearest Mark Nichols "Hobo Shoestring", you will be missed greatly, and every time I see a train, it will always remind me of how much I enjoyed your videos, sharing experiences, stories, and magnificent views from the train, and most of all seeing how much you enjoyed these experiences. Thank you for sharing these times. It was like I was on the ride with him. From the times of your travels to your favorite place and checking out apartments in Alaska, to riding around in the golf cart while visiting your dad, filming your apartment and showing train models, and gifts from fans, the National Hobo Convention to your daily rides, I greatly appreciated you taking us along. I started watching Hobo Shoestring's channel during the pandemic and with the views and stories, it was a nice ride along. His filming, editing, talks, description, and ability to see from riding a train perspective was amazing and appreciative. My heart goes out to him, and to his family and friends. I hope during the next National Hobo Convention, there is a memorial in his honor, as it is well deserved. His stories and experiences will live on, especially every time I see a train. All the best, Mark Nichols "Hobo Shoestring" and to his family. Ride on in memory.

My grandpa was sick. This is a few yrs back. He went to the store and bought a pack of redman and filled up his gas tank. Came home left his debitcard and his phone. That next morning he ended up 2 states away and ended it all driving ironically in front of a freight train. I dont think he wanted to be a burden anymore and well he was ovbiouslly going through a mental health chrisis. Love you Papa!

I agree with what some people are saying that he has probably went on his final ride. If he did then he had no need for any of his gear. What local people where he lives should do, is find out what trains were in his vicinity around the last time he was seen. Track down those trains or cars to the now date and see if he can be found on or in one of them. Riding trains was his everything. If I was him that's exactly what I would have done. Back track, and hunt for those trains and he will probably be found!

I do not agree. Look. he's been riding trains for over 30 years and now he decides to ride WITHOUT his gear? Well that's committing suicide so IS he suicidal? I think he fell off the wagon after becoming despondent after an emergency visit from hallucinations. Look. "Normal" people don't hallucinate. He then may have fallen off the dock that he was so fond of. He's around his residence and I think he'll be found in that lake. I agree with one thing though.. he's taken his final ride. Its been 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 1, 2. that's 7 days he's no longer with us. damn!

I don't think he's been abducted by aliens, so he's somewhere. No one really knows why people does what they do. I hope he's found before it's too late. I don't know him personally but I like him and what he does. I agree with OP, that he may have hopped on a train one last time. He left the ER (against medical staff's wishes), went home and subsequently disappeared. He may have been told he didn't have long to live, or maybe was diagnosed with something that he simply did not want to live with, so he left his medications (some of which apparently he absolutely depends on for survival) and gear at home. That doesn't sound too far fetched to me. I would probably do something like that in a similar scenario.

The authorities didn't start searching the lake till people from around the country started showing up on Friday at hotels to search the lake on Saturday morning and they started getting to the lake and the police immediately sent them away and began a search and quickly found his body by the docks down the lake. They should have had the dogs out there the first day. Mark had to leave the hospital because he had no health insurance. It is a sad state of our country that we don't spend money to have national healthcare but we spend trillions on wars every year. If we had Medicare for All Mark would have gotten the treatment he needed and still be alive. He should be the person we use to campaign for the money to be redirected from wars to Medicare for All. Mark was a nice guy. One of the 280 million Americans living below the Self Sufficient level. 63 MILLION AMERICANS ARE HOMELESS LIVING IN THEIR CARS DESPITE WORKING 3 JOBS. We have allowed corporate Greed to make America a full blown Third World Country for 3 out of every 4 Americans. The American Dream is a lie. On 1 out of every 180 people will ever be able to afford to buy a house. I am ashamed of our government and how it treats the weak, the sick, the poor and the disabled. America used to stand for fairness and freedom and family and now it is Atlas Shrugged with the top 5000 owning 92% of all the wealth in America. 😢😢😢😢 I am sorry America failed you Mark Many of us loved you. Please keep pushing out info about Mark. We need the media on board so we can find him. We need accurate info put out. Transient leads people to believe he is homeless, he is not. Using that word to describe him is accurate by definition, but unfortunately people associate that word with homelessness & addiction & sadly all to often they tune out everything after that. Prayers for him and his family.. train hopping is a dangerous activity even if you've been doing it your whole life. Wasnt he also having some health problems? So many different things could've happened to him that he doesn't deserve.

Hoping to God Shoestring is found safely, thanks for His friends help and concern, was checking NS trains yesterday when I was filming in Christiansburg VA and Radford.

Or he ended up like stobe. Let's hope not. It can't be good though, cops don't have him or tgey would know. Hospital. Same thing. By this point it's been a few days of it running on KZfaq and news now.. He would know and say something I'd assume. The medication thing and personal stuff changes things to really hard to think of options. But anything I can come up with is not good. Also I'm not a detective or know anyone involved. Just a KZfaq watcher that watched him and knowing the kinda guy he is I assume not good .. unprofessional opinions. I hope I'm fully wrong and he's on a bender or something.
