This clip doesn't really add a lot of context that knowing the full story does- Ruyi is currently in the cold palace due to her being framed for the crime of killing two heirs and one consort. This in it's entirety happened by the hand of Empress Fuca, Jia, Hui and A'Rou all working carefully and planning A LOT for it. The issue as to why he doesn't is two fold: The first is his severe lack of power. Yes, he is the Emperor but if you recall the chaos of the Three Kingdoms wars then it's evident that unless you can plant your foot solidly in power you have to consolidate it very carefully which is what he's had to do currently The second is that due to her being framed he's had to gather evidence secretly behind the scenes but unfortunately there's not enough to reasonably doubt that Ruyi is guilty and put forth the motion that She was framed. It's only when Halian poisons herself and Ruyi and souxin poison themselves after the emperor gets a very important piece of information due to Yuhu's investigations that it's even possible to consider pulling herself out.

He loved her truly once but got lost in his "ego" he realized to late at the ending what a pure soul he had in Ruyi and that she was the only one who loved him completely😊

He did love Ruyi but when he became emperor he became egotistical and enjoyed the love he got from the other consorts and when she called him out for killing so many of them and then crying about them he took that as an insult

Even the consorts & concubines that didn't like Ruyi told him she was the only one true to him. Empress Dowager told him repeatedly how devoted and loyal Ruyi was to him. Yet he chose to believe and protect the likes of 1st Empress, Royal Mother, Jia, Gao and Ling. I don't understand what his thought process was.

Agree. He is just selfish. He thought she is protected in cold palace but actually create more opportunities for others to harm her. Poor Ruyi always compromise again and again by the Emperor. At the end, he broke her heart

I think that if he would have been able to take her as his FIRST WIFE how different their lives together would have been. Maybe all of these concubines would have resigned themselves to being unable to consider giving birth to the next heir or competing so viciously for favor. Losing many of their children under suspicious circumstances and having to test their food for poison and wait to be targeted for assassination must have made everyone fearful ~ not knowing who you can trust. Those concubines would have driven me insane - with their whining and lying, meanwhile scheming to kill your beloved babies and children. The Emperor wasn’t the best husband but very few men could be under those circumstances.

He deserved to live with regret because the emperor schemed too much and forgot how true and faithful Ruji was to him. All of his evil deeds are forgiven but Not until the very end of his life are they reunited in spirit

I have to preface this because I know this will sound like I'm trying to be argumentative but I'm not. Question: Are we discussing the same Empress? The first wife of the Emperor? Because I really didn't see that part. True, she was a toxic personality. She killed, she really had others do it for her,) indiscriminately, was the cause of her own child's death by having him stand in front of a door that was constantly being opened in the dead of winter, and poisoned Ruyi and her maid while Ruyi was confined in the cold palace to name a few of her sins.The only time she showed any guilt was on her deathbed, and then she was trying to justify her actions. So I'm afraid I can't feel any pity for her. But I do agree that the actress that portrayed the Empress did a terrific job.she was very believable.

@@diannewalker5132 yes I’m referring to the first empress. I agree she rarely shows remorse and that’s largely because she does have others commit crimes for her and isn’t there when the crimes are actually committed but when she’s up close and sees the consequences (this scene, her son dying, the deal she had to make for her daughters marriage, etc) you can see the cracks in her perfect facade. Ultimately she always chooses herself but there are moments where you can see guilt or remorse (not always the same thing) come through and this is one of those scenes to me. Good characters don’t necessarily have to be good people but the best ones are complex and morally grey in my opinion.

@@remylewis8721You are so right, guilt meaning I did it, and remorse meaning I'm sorry I did it are two very different things, but she showed neither one about anything until she was on her deathbed. True, she always chose to protect herself, she even chose herself over protecting her child. Yes, the actress was wonderful (in fact the whole cast was), the Empress was a very complicated person and the actress brought that out . But to get back to the Empress. In my opinion, all of the terrible things she did, by far, out weighed the few good points she had, and I say that because a child's life is something nobody on this Earth can replace because when you kill a child you not kill that child, you kill all the children that child could have had.

@@diannewalker5132 again I’m not defending her actions, she’s not a good person. She’s a good character (she’s well written in addition to being well acted, not flat and one dimensional) and this scene is a good example of that. Same thing with Jia or Wei Yanwan, they suck as people but they serve as an effective character foil for Ruyi. The show would be boring if the antagonist were just cartoonishly villainous, instead they all have their motivations but that doesn’t mean it justifies their actions.

That’s not how it works. The emperor do not have “ultimate” power. He need to adhere to rules and have reasons. Otherwise people will question his authority. If emperor do not follow rules, why would his subjects? The emperor in these time look like they have a lot of power but it’s not free. He sit on a delicate balance, his power is not just from the throne but also from himself. If he show he is bias, over time his subject will not submit to him and would try to overthrow him. Well bringing this back to Ruyi ~ you think this is a small matter but if he set precedent then people can use it against him. When Qianlong time the dynasty is not yet 100% stabilized so he need to be more careful. Additionally, you can see the harem directly affect politics and vice versa. The politicians outside will judge and arrange their chess pieces depending on how Emperor acted in the harem. If they see he is bias without proper reasons then they’ll anticipate his moves and attack/corner him. If they bring this up in court - pardoning a sinner without proper reasons - he’ll be very embarrassed. Then they will question him: is he an emperor who will make decision based on his “feelings” and not reason? If he bulldozing over their objections - they will judge him as a tyrant. Basically you can’t do whatever you want as emperor without facing consequences. So if he does something - he should know whether he willing to take the consequences.

First look up the word Emperor, then look up the word sovereign, then look up the word supreme. They all mean the same thing don't they? Since the word supreme means "above all", it would follow that the word Emperor does too, wouldn't it? (I'll have to ask you to forgive the way I'm explaining this, I guess it's just habit). So knowing the meaning of the word, and knowing who installed the ministers in the first place, I ask you, exactly who would he have to answer to?

That's who I wish she had left the Emperor to be with. Ruyi and the guard were such a sweet couple, both were gentle souls much too good for the people they finally married that, unlike them, didn't seem to be able to love anyone. In a perfect world they would have lived an ordinary life married with a bunch of children and most importantly, happy together.

i think she gave excuses time and time again for him because he's the emperor. you have to understand that the time they're living in i feel like she didn't have much of a choice. not only was he the emperor, which for them basically meant that he was the "son" of heaven. that is what they're taught. not only that, but she was really in love with him. this series started by showing us how young they were back then and how different the emperor was back then as well, they were def inlove, def kindred spirits; for him to argue with his oWN emperor like that just to marry ruyi, and also saving his virginity for ruyi basically even though he had a legal first wife, completely against the rules. that act of affection made me feel like at one point they were similar and i have to believe that he won her over completely because of that. as they grew up and he became the actual emperor he had to step up and adopt the same patterns and rules as the kings before him, she grew up as well, she clearly knows how the game is played so she could argue with herself that she saw reasoning behind what we did and what he felt like he had to do even though it hurt her. i think the moment she started to realize differently was when he started lusting after the han woman that was introduced later in the series, he threw everything away. rules, the harem's opinion, empress dowager's opinion, everything he said that was reasoning to why he HAD to hurt her, she saw that he could've, at any moment really just didn't have to do any of it. he could've saved her at any point.

Ruyi didn't start the fire=her former maid arranged the fire. The only thing Ruyi did was arrange for the poison of their food at the end of her time in the Cold Palace to get out under the Emperor's order. Add to that Hailan poisoning herself with the cinnabar to provide an alternate suspect to Ruyi in the harming of the other two concubines babies and that's what they used to get her out.
