Independent economist Chris Richardson discusses how Wednesday’s slight rise in inflation from 3.5 per cent to 3.6 per cent will affect interest rates.
“I certainly think it’s going to be a long wait for any interest rate cut in Australia,” Mr Richardson told Sky News Australia.
“I don’t expect a hike right now; the Reserve Bank really doesn’t want to change rates in either direction.”

When will you guys understand? There's no "rate cuts" coming. Ever. Interest rates were held far too low for far too long and now they need to be held commensurately as high for just as long. 4.35% is no where near high enough. They need to be at set at at least 6% - 7 or 8% preferably - for the next 10 years. Sorry but that's the situation we're in - plan accordingly and deal with it.

Inflation is still about 1.6% above where the RBA wants it to be. Why the hell are we still talking about cuts? This is madness and how we got into this mess in the first place. There needs to be a recession/massive correction. ATM 90k per annum is not enough for a single person to live on, something very wrong.

It's been a long wait to get into a Commonwealth Bank in western Victoria for the last 3 days, due to a "Security Alert" Only 3 people allowed in the bank at any time, no answer to why or how long, was told they get told first thing in the morning whether to keep "Security Procedures" in place.\ Anyone know why?

It's worth understanding that RBA rates are not especially abnormal. In fact many would say the rate is relatively normal, perhaps just a little above a neutral setting. I remember when 3% was an emergency rate! Now everyone thinks ZERO is the normal level.

8% would be normal, but they are going slow. Overtime though, most people will pay 12%. Just don't spook the horses.

The CPI increase in the month of May last year was -0.4%. So even if, hypothetically, the increase in May 2024 is 0% (with -0.4% falling out of the 12 month window), CPI will rise from 3.6% to 4.0%! That will be the headline news and talk of rates cuts will be even more muted.

Hiking further rates to push down inflation in a shorter timespan will be way better than high rates for longer. Inflation will not get back to the target range if still many people are optimistic and walk on the sidelines to get back to buy properties.
