Tyler, Regarding the fence splice you might want to try a “Western Union” splice. I first unwind the wire up to the first barb on either side of the splice. Then I “Y” the ends and start wrap one wire at a time. It holds real good and very rarely do I ever have to re-splice. As for your issue with distinguishing who is a heifer of a bull, I’ve used different colored tags. White for heifers and green for steers and bulls. Respectfully, James -a fellow cattleman from East Tennessee P.S. Please give Belly and Callie a pat on their heads from my wife and I….

I had forgotten when you bring them over there. It sure felt like a full day in this video even though it was only 22 minutes. You have a blessed life. Thanks so much for sharing it. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! To you and the your whole family. Hope you have a wonderful day. Oh, Yeah! I imagine/guess no video this Thursday. Tyler, Be careful with that back! Watching you flip that tub......lower vertebral structure is like a bearing, eventually it can or will wear out! Don't rush it. I just had injections in spine and SI joint a few days short of a month ago. Over 2 months of bed rest and lumbar traction prior and I may have dodged a bullet as I am back on my feet. Time will tell. Cautiously optomistic.

Pretty damn cool. I know that you're busy but maybe a scarecrow or something? Like tinsel or aluminum foil on the fence? On the calf fence? A calf busting through a five wire has to be stopped. Like I'm a farmer. Fantastic video. The editing and camera spare awesome!! No wonder Pete watches you. His moving the "cows" video today was so cool. You both are on the path to success. The one difference is Hilary farms as well. But you sir? Are doing amazing!! As a past Californian I have a little extra interest in seeing how things work out. Steers get an even number in the right ear. Heifers get an odd number in the left ear. Color of The tag identifies the owner. The month of birth is written above the tag number. That makes it easy to tell who's old enough to wean or sell. On the back of the tag I write bull number - cow number and day month and year of birth.

I finally graduated my fence mending from the wire bending method to the use of wire ferrules aka brass cylinders. You slip both ends of the wire through the cylinder from each side, after stretching the fence with the puller. The you use a crimping tool to crimp the ferrule onto the wires. I usually put two crimps on each ferrule to ensure a tight grip. Then release the stretching tool. I have not had a broken fence at the ferrule, to date. the crimpers are an extra expense, as are the ferrules, but they do save me time to balance everything out.

I trained my puppy to get in vehicles by first jumping onto the floorboard (where your feet go) then crawling up to the seat (saves wear and tear on the seat). But I didn't realize until he was an old man and he couldn't jump on the seat anymore that pointing to the floorboard and saying go the easy way, that it would save my back lifting a 140-pound rottweiler onto the car seat every time I wanted hamburgers. (His was keto). 💖🌞🌵😷

At first I liked the even/odd number idea for steers/heifers. I was worried that the H would get rubbed off the ear tag, (you'd probably decide steer/heifer before you'd ever be close enough to read the tag) but the only place it would matter would be in the computer. Since adding the H in the computer is so easy and less fussy at tagging time, I'd go with the H system (I'd add the H at the end of the numbers.) 💖🌞🌵😷

Or just add a "0" or "1" to the end of the current numbering system? That might avoid switching between letters & numbers on the keyboard....

Hello Tyler, and thank you for another enjoyable update of “life on the farm”. At around the 20:50 mark, you commented about the need for an easy way to identify the gender of a calf, especially when lots of them are clustered close together. I can think of two possible ways - and there may be more - which involve tags which are fitted to their ears. One possible way would be two use two colours, for example “Blue for boys” and “Pink for girls” (or whatever colours may be available). The other way would involve fitting tags to the right-ear for one gender, and to the left-ear for the other gender. May I make another suggestion? When you repaired the top strand of the barbed wire fence, you mentioned the possibility of building a pipe-fence for at least a short length at that location. If you have some suitably long pieces of pipe available now, I think that it may be practicable to install at least a top-rail to the existing fence, with the pipe just tied to the tops of the existing posts with plain fence-wire. This may not provide great strength to the fence, but it may produce a good visual barrier which could deter the cattle from wanting to cross at that location. It may be beneficial to introduce at least a couple more horizontal strands of barbed wire along that short length of fence. It may also be helpful to use vertical strands of plain wire between the posts, tied to the horizontal barbed wires, to prevent the barbed wires from being spread apart. Wishing you success!
