That was a surprise Matt hearing myself lol, I,m glad you up and running at your new qth, I have a UK antennas 49:1 nice bit of kit but using a 9:1 by Balun designs with 84ft of wire for now, hope to catch on 40m real soon.

FB, Matt, on the inverted EFHW. Sounds like a winner. Going back to your questions about the fence behind your shack, I think it would be fun to experiment both ways: 1) connect it as a ground to see if it gives you any advantage; 2) connect it as a low elevation NVIS antenna to see what you get! Thanks for your videos. I find them very informative and well done. 73, AE6SS

I shouldve warned you Matt.. I had same problem I was in amongst hedges and trees like tarzan after getting tangled.. I yanked the main element from a branch and stretched the wire and 80m element snapping the connector at the coil... Got a little frustrated. Lol. I will have to order another as its way off on 80M.. I have a really small back garden so I'm really limited. Yes get your ground onto the fence matt I have a fence that goes all the way around a reservoir and up over a cliff and its a perfect ground. What a difference since your last configuration. Loved that Ateam Sstv tone.. Well in mate thanks for sharing

I own acreage in western Minnesota. The state installed an insulated electric fence so they could rent public property everybody owns to run livestock on. Before they rented it I attached my IC-705 and a manual tuner to the insulated wire and the ground or counterpoise to one of the uninsulated wires. I knew there was a net on so I called and reached western Oregon. Reception was wonderful. Light it up!

I’ve built a dozen EFHW antennas using mostly a 49:1 wind for the balun. By using a sweeping analyzer connected directly to the feed point but collecting data via Bluetooth (Rig Expert Stick Pro), I’ve been able to tune them to the fundamental band and those upward harmonics very, very well. Glad you’re on the HF bands from your new QTH! 73 de K4FMH

You can certainly have some fun experimenting with that fence. I couldn't tell from the vegetation if it was properly insulated from the posts nor if there were any metal posts between the wooden ones. Where I grew up in wheat and cattle land in northwestern Oklahoma there are many, many miles of "hot fence", but most of them will be buzzing at one time or another. Kinda glad I'm not out there any more just for the possible QRM ;)

I would use one of the wires of the fence for a RX only beverage antenna! Add an inverted L for 160 + 80m and you're in business with the big guns on the low bands. Winter is coming so perfect timing! It seems you have a pretty low(er) noise level compared to your old QTH. Do you know by how much? Enjoy the new QTH and it's possiblities! Thanks for the update

Personally, Matt, I would walk around the fence tracking where it goes wherever it goes, and if there were any breaks, I would find a way to link them. I would then check its resonance with the VNA if it was no good, then I would use it as a ground.

Nice to hear normal sound in the beginning of the video. The indoor sound always gives me the shivers :-) Mike is way too much "crispy" I think. About the fence: are you sure it will never be at high voltage? I would never take the risk to blow up my equipment, unles it's my own fence.

...that fence, it's essentially a ground or will be at earth ground... those look like metal stakes or fence posts... I don't think you would have good results loading it up. But.... I wouldn't think twice about burying some #10 wire and clippint it to the fence if you feel the need. A good earth ground eliminates static buildup and RX noise...Try taking out that 1:1 balun.. there is loss in those things, and you don't need loss... if your coax is buried into the earth, I doubt you really need it.. whether you like it or not your coax shield becomes the counterpoise..there is nothing wrong with that. The inverted L introduces a vertically polarized component into the radiation pattern, and tends to fill in the nulls that exist on a horizontal only antenna. Wow beautiful QTH Matt...

Matt, could you do a video on SSTV reception? Be interesting to hear what you do with that fence, but you may have to ask the landowner’s permission, and make sure he doesn’t electrify it whilst connected to your shack! 73 Simon, M7WWX

A wire with alligator clips from ground bar to fence to see if adding the fence as a counterpoise will add better reception or TX. I did that to mine and it is working fine in reception side.

I have built 5 EFHW antennas now of differing types. They all work well. Attaching an earth/counterpoise made very little , if any, improvement. None of my wire antennas, EFHW, OCFD, G5RV, Half Wave dipoles, Inv Vees etc, worked as well as my 80m horizontal full wave loop antenna. None. In 40 years the sky loop at 30 feet rules. Only the triband yagi is better on 10, 15 and 20. I live on a farm with wire fencing. It only takes a few rusty or corroded joins in the wire and you have an RF generating diode causing substantial problems. In my experience forget attaching the neighbours old fence to your earthing system. It gave me grief. It might be OK on new correctly installed electric fence but that would soon be energised by the farmer anyway. Cheers VK5LB

Living on a Croft I have 13 acre fence, about 5km in length I tried connecting wires as a rx and as a ground , both performed very poor . Mind you I was using a 240 feet doublet. Your EFHW works great . That fence will need to be scrapped off the galvanised, that would compromise the fence . Is it your fence ?

Drop a 200m wire straight to the field, and make Beverage On The Ground. Or, dig a coax 20-30m from the fence and make Loop On The Ground. Best RX antenna, you can have

I would maybe use it as a counterpoise or ground, but not antenna. Probably has some weeds and grass up on it. Some of the electric fences around here are set up to be weed burners, that will burn off the grass that gets to the fence... but, as dry as it has been here I don't know that it is ran that way lately.

Matt, I have heard a lot of stories about these 49:1’s. Which has kind of put me off. Maybe you can give me some advice as I have bought one, so I can try for myself. One thing I’m not sure about, i’ve been told the coax, must be a specific length when used with the 49:1 as I understand these use the coax as part of the matching. can you tell me as to the specific lengths of coax & wire for top band? Or a formula used depending on what size required. Thanks 🙏

I’ve run a 35 foot vertical wire as an end fed half wave on 20 meters with a 49:1 impedance matching transformer with good results in terms of good matching (about 1.2:1 SWR and performance, based on reverse beacon network SNRs, casual QSOs, and contesting on both CW and SSB. It will also match well as an end fed full wave on 10 meters, but radiated performance is markedly inferior to a simple quarter wave 10 meter vertical with a counterpoise or a simple horizontal doublet or dipole. Suspect that at a full wave vertical there is degraded low angle radiation and enhanced high angle lobbing going on. Can also make a 35 foot up 35 foot over 80 meter inverted L over 18 elevated radials run as a 40 meter end fed half wave inverted L with the 49:1 transformer and also 11:24 as a 20 meter full wave inverted L and a 10 meter 2 wavelength inverted L. All have relatively low SWR but performance is not a good as a simple quarter wave vertical band for band, based on comparison of RBN SNR comparisons on multiple occasions. The 80 meter 1/4 wave inverted L is about 10 sB better to Europe than my 45 foot elevated dipole however. Chris AJ1G Stonington CT

I would be inclined to keep the line isolator and UnUn well off the ground (Nail to tree?). A square loop or half square around the fence might be an interesting idea. Also that exterior wood (fence/decking) in the garden needs wood preserver. G7VFY

Be careful about using a long fence as a radial or antenna if you have lightning. They are prone to attract it and can lead to all kinds of damage to your gear.
