Strongly disagree. 😆 They’re both idiots, just in different ways, but that’s what makes them so lovable. Though I will say my favorite couple is Chris and Kenichi. However short their love story is. I dunno I kind of relate to the stories in this show. Most real love couples encounter lots of problems from my experience. Especially at the age in this show. I like a lot how it’s the women having trouble getting a guy. In my life that’s just happened to be what I’ve seen at their age too. My two best friends in high school both met the man they eventually married back then. One of them dated while in high school and she was like Kotoko. She’s not the most studious and yet the guy she was head over heels for was a very intellectual guy. They had issues. The guy too although he wasn’t handsome (unlike Irie) and my friend was better looking than him, he still couldn’t commit because he wasn’t sure. Basically the guy was more restrained and he was like, um, we’re just in high school and we don’t yet know what we want in life. But, my friend basically was exactly like Kotoko and she just knew that he was the one. They had a huge breakup right after graduating high school. Because he said although he liked her he just couldn’t commit since it was the only relationship either had ever had. She was devastated. I think at the time everyone thought they would never see each other again. But, several years went by and they just happened to meet by chance again and they got back together and married and have a daughter. My other friend, she met her husband while in high school too but while working at a movie theater. He went to a different high school. They had dated others before though and basically they never broke up. However in that relationship too, although the guy was actually committed he too took it slow and didn’t propose until several years into college. My friend she told me that she was actually the one who asked him out originally. He was very shy and the whole time she was the one too who was very outspoken about her intentions. Both guys in those relationships weren’t vocal about getting married, a house, kids-but the women were. 😆 And both couples married and have children now.

In the anime, I wish we could see Naoki's point of view in full.

@@rina0217 Yeah I think people wouldn’t hate him so much if they could see his perspective. But I really think this anime is actually more relatable than most. But, it’s just in my experience it seems to me to reflect how teenagers and young adults really are like (of course exaggerated) at those ages. Every teenage romance I ever saw in real life was a bit immature and break ups and misunderstandings could be on really silly things. But also I think it is very accurate about guys too. Because the majority of the guys in this anime don’t think seriously about marrying and everything. Not as teenagers. Nor even as young adults though they start thinking about it. In my experience it seems that as teenagers and young adults women are the ones who are really serious about relationships and even willing to commit. Although again not all. Guys hesitate at that age usually. And sometimes even if they really like the girl they just can’t commit because they’re not ready. Which is what happened to my friend. She was completely serious about her relationship with her high school sweetheart and he had nothing against her and liked her too but he just couldn’t marry right out of high school. So they broke up for several years before reuniting and the rest is history. Now married with a daughter. We watched this series when we were younger. I’ve heard too that the author of this series died before it was completed and her husband was actually the one who finished it for her. And supposedly the husband said that this series the female lead reminds him of his wife and the male lead of him. So yeah, people dissing this anime-I think they look at it too superficially. Relationships are messy in real life. Especially in teen years. Sometimes people can love you but they struggle to commit because of other factors. Etc.

I remember being so sad at the ending where they have a kid and the kid is "in competition" with her mother to get the father's love. Like wtf kid, Kotoko got through so much bullshit, you can count Naoki's kind behaviors on the fingers of one hand and she can't even be happily married, like their kid seems to not like her that much T-T

The 1996 version is my favorite portrayal of Naoki. It's overall a great watch and you can find it on KZfaq. It's 9 episodes long and it's a little different from the overall premise but it gave me butterflies. Takashi Kashiwabara really made me love the character of Naoki

He has a problem in his personality he can't deal with love because he doesn't understand these feelings if kotoko didn't appear in his life he would stay cold and without feelings this is because he was excellent in everything and he didn't even feel any bad feelings or even love or how to be jealous that's why he was like this and when kotoko entered he started to change + kotoko is the one who stayed with him even whatever he did

But he needed her and she wanted him.

​@@あやx Not everyone could find Kotoko's stupidity and her way of not getting Naoki to disrespect her, Naoki's blunt attitude and yelling at Kotoko for everything, Kinnosuke putting Kotoko in a pedestal even though she's not perfect, Kotoko's friends being there, Matsumoto being the classic love rival, IDK why someone would hate Chris, Naoki's mom, dad and Yuuki, but alright.
