Effettivamente in italiano ci sono queste sottigliezze che risultano davvero complicate da spiegare e da far capire. Non credo sarei riuscito a fare di meglio, sei stata molto brava! Sono capitato sul tuo canale per la mia passione per le lingue straniere e poi mi è venuta la curiosità di vedere come venisse insegnata la nostra lingua da un madrelingua tramite questi video su KZfaq, specialmente quando si tratta di affrontare argomenti così complessi. THanks, Lucrezia! I finally get it. Putting the adjective after the noun would be like adding "that is" between the noun and the adjective. i.e. Un amico vecchio=a friend that is old.

Gracie lucrezia I think I understand. When the adjective is after the noun you could even insert the words ' which/who is ' between the noun and the adjective. I bought a telephone which is new. A friend who is old. Etc.

When read that Italian is very similar to Portuguese I didn't believe. However, they are very alike. Tu podes ver por essa frase em que estou escrevendo em Português. I am Brazilian and this grammatical rules are used in Portuguese either. Nice video!

Hi Lucrezia, I have a question about the example Un grande scrittore/uno scrittore grande. Why not UNO grande scrittore ? Is it because the article is before a word that begins by G ? So it's UN. So we make the article agree with the word that directly follows?

Another way to put it would be that placing the adjetive before the noun, it relates more with the meaning of the noun. Like in "una buona amica"="a good friend" as opposed to "una amica buona"="a friend that is a good person (not necesarily or especificaly a good friend)". The same with the writer, in the first case, knowing he is a writer is more important than in the second case when being old has nothing to do with being a writer. Am I right? My mother language is spanish so I think is very similar un italian.

drunkennoodles "Un nuovo amico" means "a new friend", "un amico nuovo" could mean that your friend has changed in behaviour or something, so that you don't recognise him! It is an interpretation, though! "Un nuovo amico" and "un amico nuovo" can also be synonyms.

gcpc1 Ciao! Direi che hanno un significato leggermente diverso. Quando dico "una bella sciarpa", capisco che la sciarpa è una sciarpa calda e fatta bene, coprente; quando dico "una sciarpa bella", capisco che è una sciarpa bella da vedere, ma magari non abbastanza calda e coprente :)

I'm still getting used to the way adjectives are used in Italian, and your video is very helpful! But I'm still not very clear with the "un nuovo telefono/un telefono nuovo" example: Does "un nuovo telefono" mean you bought another telephone (in additional to the current one), which may be a used one? And "un telefono nuovo" means the telephone is brand new / unused? Grazie mille!

In English there is no real way to express those kinds of differences. An old friend (of mine) vs. An old (person) friend Un amico vecchio contro un vecchio amico But very interesting is the Italian language.

fantastico! un grande scrittore - how about a great writer? But what about una bella donna, or una donna bella.... difference is that in first example you are emphasising her beauty, and the 2nd, less emphasis, but still beautiful !! What do you think?

87nicoh Nel primo esempio (una bella donna), puoi voler dire che la donna è una bella persona; nel secondo esempio (una donna bella), vuoi dire che è bella per il suo aspetto fisico. :)

I am still getting used to this! With the examples of adjectives you gave, are you saying that these examples are ones that you commonly find both before and after a noun? And the 'poetic' examples don't make a difference to the meaning? The example of them used in poetic language also happens in English, except the opposite way! "A summer hot" would be considered 'poetic'. Comunque, grazie!
