In this video, which is a part of my series, ITALIAN CLASSIC MOVIES THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW, I review THE DAMNED, Directed by Luchino Visconti. The film starred Helmut Berger, Dirk Bogarde, Charlotte Rampling and Ingrid Thulin!
In my review I explain how Visconti puts you right through the evil of the rise of Nazi's in Germany in the 1930's and why it's so effective emotionally, yet very challenging to watch.
My guest is Paolo Kagaoan, who is a film critic and IN THE SEATS. You can read his reviews at the link below!

13:54 I think you're supposed to empathize with Martin because he's so incredible messed up. My reading of the relationship with his mother was that she was abusing him for years to manipulate him in doing what she wanted, and at the end he's taking that all back on her. He's just a deeply, fundamentally damaged person who's privileged enough to get away with all the most heinous shit, and nobody's willing to intervene because he's useful to them.

Just saw this last night. It’s one of those movies that shock and revolt and confuse but you can’t turn away. You just need to see how this ends.

Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling in the movie The Night Porter were excellent too.

I first saw this was when I was 11….. late night movies when gran was asleep. It’s still a great film for me though my understanding has definitely changed! My original view was rooting for Martin and it still is. Helmut is sadly was a total star. Love this review 👍🏻

It's fascinating to have a Visconti film, especially The Damned, reviewed through the prissy woke lens of the current day. I'm old enough to have seen the movie in real time, and the general consensus was that the orgy scene, with its startling mix of homoeroticism and hardcore violence, was in fact the best scene in the movie, and the one to be remembered. But now it has the reviewers clutching for their pearls. Nazis, in underwear, having fun, oh dear!

What did either of us say that would be considered "woke"?

That scene shocked viewers even then. I didn't say it should be cut or anything.

I saw the movie in the theater when it came out. There was an old woman sitting next to me -- I didn'tknow her. When the mass murder scene appeared she muttered "That's it, get rid of the filth!". I thought she had a German accent. Was she "woke"? You seem to have regarded this as a typical scene of gay fun, only to be "startled" by the appearance of machine gun wielding gaybashers. Nice try, de Santis.

He didn't answer my questions. Usually, when I challenge idiotic comments, they don't respond.
