The Italian health care system can be quite complex and very different from other countries. In this video we'll go over the Italian healthcare system basics when it comes to going to the doctor or the hospital here in Italy.

Italy’s focus on prevention, rather than treatment, is what I believe keeps the Italian health care system at such a high rank 2° in the World Health Organization’s listing of top countries for quality health care.

I believe it's a ranking in regards to the system as a whole when compared to others while also taking into account the ability to accesses the system.

Well, if you don’t want to wait you can go with the private medical service. You pay the full cost but you will not wait so long (at least we have choices)

You're absolutely right, i'm very grateful that they allow a person to have the freedom of choice if need be. however I can say I've actually never had to wait too long for the medical services I've needed. The real waits though seem to really only be for specialists and specialised serviced such as physical therapy

It is now time to renew the permesso and I need to get health insurance. I am living in pensione and want to find the most low cost insurance available to meet the permesso requirements. Do you know what the specifications are to meet that requirement? When I checked out your nomad insurance, my age of 69 did not allow me to get a quote from them... Is there age discrimination with getting insurance, I wonder? Buh...

I was searching some options in Europe and Italy seems a very good one, but i cannot find very good information about the exact pathway to follow and all the paperwork I need to do. I wanted information about how is the lifestyle for a physician there in Italy and some other advices and questions related to being a doctor there. I wanted to ask you if you know someone who i could talk with and who can help me to know how is the process for taking a medical residency in Italy or you can help me in some way with that, I will appreciate it a lot! I think the greatest problem, is the difference of infrastructure quality and quantinty in the territory (in the north usually have more hospital with better quality whan the south). Hi Rafael, thanks for doing these videos. I'm a Brit who's moving to Rome at the end of the month. In order for me to get residency status in Italy, I need to demonstrate having a work contract, enough sufficient finances to support myself and 'personal health insurance.' Some people advise this is private health insurance, whereas others say I simply need to pay to join the SSN and use that receipt as proof of health insurance. Do you happen to know which is correct?

Hi, This sounds like a familiar story, by chance did you post last night in one of the Italy facebook groups? If not no worries, if it's someone else maybe this issue is a bit more widespread that I thought. Anyway... In general most of the info I know is most relevant for non-EU citizens and people who are coming to Italy as a dual-citizen. In regards to EU citizens I've also found a lot of mixed information, this is one of the reasons why I didn't go into detail in this video about that as it seems each country has it's own system and way to prove these things. I'm not an expert on the subject but from what I do know, I'm assuming while you're still an EU citizen (before Brexit is complete) that your European Healthcard should hold some weight for emergency services if you're only here temporarily. If I were in your position, I would go down to my loval NHS office and speak to them to see if they can give you the documents that would be needed, if you're lucky you may find someone who is familiar with the Expat situation as there are so many British expats. Get the documents that are needed, then when you come to Italy, go to the local health provider and ask them if that's sufficient. Hopefully that's at least healpful in someway, if you get any more info please be sure to update me on your situation, maybe some info that you share with me will be able to help someone else :) Good luck and enjoy your time in Rome ^_^

You need travel insurance or private insurance in the US maybe could pay for it. You're not a resident in Italy anymore, so you don't pay the taxes, so you have no right to the Health System, it doesn't matter if you're an Italian citizen.

Here in Brazil i was waiting for 7 hours in "*Emergency* Care Unit" just to be misdiagnosed, i have a neurological problem, without meds i would had permanent damage if i did'nt go for private healthcare, so much for Public healthcare and 10% of gdp. This hybrid system looks much more promising.

There are plenty of options depending on the situation. Usually, where possible, doctors tend to send people to spend their last days at home, with full health service provided ( nurses and doctors regularly visiting the patient at home and providing therapy). However in some cases it could not be possible, so patient has to be moved in a specific place called Hospice (I believe there are also in the UK an US as well). All these options doesn't require any form of payments, all provided by SSN.

Moving forward I was paying for blood test and scans which is like 70 and 400€. I paid 3700€ for a surgery and now the same person assisting me says I need to pay 3300€ for every round of chemo. I have some doubts because I’ve never directly paid to the hospital, the person doing all the paperwork is family so I thought I could trust me. Do you think those fees are accurate ??

Free is a euphemism. Taxes pay for it, but it's a service I glady pay for. I have been to the pronto soccorso 3 times for something not so serious. Twice in Salerno and once here in Rome. I never paid anything which I thought was strange as there is usually a small charge. I actually just recently got my health card but before that I just showed up with my Italian passport and I was treated and the wait times were not too long. One of those three times I had to have day surgery for my ear and although I had to wait in the hospital all day (8 am - 5pm) I was grateful to have the service done despite only showing up with my passport.........and owing nothing in the end. I don't think I'll ever get used to that idea having grown up in the USA. With that said, whatever costs I incur here I glady pay them as there is no comparison to US costs.

It's not like in Italy. There is no national health card and there is no contribution towards a national system unless you qualify for medicaid which is miserable system for the absolute poorest. So I've heard. When you are 65 you qualify for medicare which pays for part of your healthcare. For everyone else, if you want a medico di base and long term care (example: cancer) you need a medical insurance policy which can be very expensive.

She has a medical condition and will need on going medical attention and prescriptions. She is not able to register with a doctor without a S1 form from the UK. UK say she is not entitled to an S1 and she is not working for a UK company in Italy. Now what can she do. She has been told she has to pay. She has Italian id. Italian residency and code fiscal. Why does she have to pay. Her E111 is only for emergency care not long term.

Working for an Italian company she shouldn't need the S1 module. It seems that she met one of those ignorant bureaucrats that are way too common in Italy. The documents that she should need are: - ID card or other document - working contract (must be > 3 months) - fiscal code - (optional) proof of residency, that can be substituted by a self-certification There COULD be some variations depending on the region where she lives, but I doubt it. May I ask what is her region?

You kind of forget to mention the hundreds of years european countries had no universal health care.. this only started recently after WW2... also you can have massive social spending when essentially all of Western Europe lives off of American protection.. if Western Europe actually had to invest in their militaries this would not be the reality

You forget that if the Americans did not want to dominate the world by setting up military bases all over the place and waging totally unnecessary wars like in Iraq that cost you hundreds of billions each year, then this money could be invested in a system. universal health care.

Sorry, you have to check your facts. US doesn't "not have universal healtcare because they spend for defense". US spend for healtcare, per capita, more than double than UK and France and three times than Italy, to have a mediocre service at best. Most of US expenses are private, but Medicare and Medicaid costs 4,554$ per capita, that's practically the total (public and private) spending of UK (4,653$ per capita), and 24% more than the total (public and private) Italian spending (3,649$ per capita). US government alredy pays a national universal healtcare, without providing it to the population. Defense has nothing to do with it.

Interesting that the system on the national level gets rated in the highest positions... I can also say I've really only ever had good experiences using the system... but it definitely depends on where in the country you find yourself...

1st national health system in the world, a homeless person will have a new heart in place of a rich person if he is at the top of the ranking... toxic addicts, no prison and free community 24 hours, room and board, psychologist and psychiatry, group, gym, football pitch , job just finished the course, family doctor, private hospitals are paid 2/3 by the state 1/3 the patient. non-EU citizens without documents cannot be reported, they are only treated, because if they have a communicable disease, they are not afraid, like in the USA, TO BE hit with beatings and teyser in the balls 😅
