Date of Filming: 25/7/20
Camera: GoPro Hero 7 Black
Operator: Trenitalia Intercity Notte
Departure: Milan / Milano Centrale, Italy
Arrival: Palermo Centrale, Sicily, Italy

Thank you for showing the InterCity Notte experience! It's not the best train, the AC doesn't work half of the time, it lacks food service, it's super slow... I'm used to taking the one from Turin to Reggio Calabria (around 20 hours, no ferry) and let me tell you: it CAN get worse. The cheapest option on that ride is the 2nd class seating couch. SEATING COUCH on a SLEEPER train. And the AC breaks just as often! A delightful experience, indeed. But... it's also quite relaxing in some ways, spending all of that time just resting and traveling, and the scenery in Southern Italy is spectacular! Also, it's dirt cheap, the 2nd class can make the trip an amazing deal- at the price of your back having to deal with the repercussions, I guess :') I grew affectionate of this service, even with all of the issues, thank you for making such a detailed video so I can show it to my non-Italian friends!!!

I think the reason why they always stall with the bridge and tunnel building is that it’s in an active earthquake zone and yes they can overcome this as they have done in other areas but the cost keeps getting higher because of the lethargy of the decision makers, great post and even though I like the clickety clack of the wheels that one sounded like a jackhammer going off in the next door compartment

exactly. A century ago (1908) an earthquake (by magnitude of 7.1) DESTROYED the city of Messina. Imagine the Big One in California. And now imagine how much destructive could be a similar earthquake on the Strait.

We are also scared that mafia could take control on the project, the bridge would so be very expensive and badly built. Not to mention the massive amount of time for completing the project. When completed then, mafia would have a very easy route for its traffic. We are also concerned about the enviromental impact of the bridge.

That's possibly the last great European 'adventure' train trips. 21 hours without onboard catering is crazy. Love the whole relaxed air of the preparation for the ferry crossing - no rush, just a leisurely process. Perfect.. Hope they never build the tunnel to replace it. Sicily is top of my post-covid 'to do' list. Including this train trip Sometimes I think you could issue bingo cards for toilet reviews, Italian rails painted white, best view from a loco hauled train etc... 😉🤣🤣

I just finished a train trip through Italy last week. I took the Intercitynotte Roma - Catania in "Deluxe" and the Intercitynotte Palermo - Roma in "Excelsior". Before, I was a little afraid because of all the KZfaq trip reports of 2019 and 2020 that were negative about the air condition in the sleeper cars, but in both trains it worked perfectly right from boarding the trains until the arrival. So I think Trenitalia has improved in that matter in the last months. Sadly I have to confirm all the reviews that show the lack of a restaurant or minibar service. I can not understand that, too... By the way, last week it was not possible to access that part of the ferry where you can have a look at the loaded train. And also the Cafeteria on board of the ferry was closed, maybe due to covid regulations. All in all it was a fantastic trip and in my opinion the Deluxe or Excelsior cars are a far better option than the Comfort (Couchette) cars where you don't have at least a sink... Finally I would highly recommend to buy a Trenitalia Pass, which is a great value. For my trip I paid just 297,- Euros for four free trips in Intercitynotte Deluxe cars or Frecciarossa Executive cars. The Excelsior trip Palermo - Roma was a separate ticket for only 104,90 Euros. Cheers from Germany, Christoph

21:59 the main deal is that it's a zone with a really high sismic risk. And earthquakes in Italy can be pretty destructive. For example, in 1908 an earthquake (of 7.1 magnitude) *destroyed* the city of Messina, so any earthquake can destroy the bridge or the tunnel. There's also the fact that Calabria and Sicily are on two different tectonic plates, and they're diverging of a relevant distance every year (some centimeteres by year). Another thing: the strait is different from the Channel between England and France, it's pretty deep, so building a tunnel under the ground could not be the answer... And let's not forget the mafia infiltrations (sadly a reality in all of Italy, especially in southern Italy), that can "eat up" the money for the infrastructure. For how useful could be a permanent link between Sicily and Italy, these are the main reasons it's not feasable, and ferry trains remain the simpler solution.
@NonstopEurotrip

Thanks for the information. Many other countries with big earthquake problems, still build bridges that survive them though 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@NonstopEurotrip Cause actually engineering is not the biggest issue. Fears of corruption, mafia, distrust in general (especially after Genoa's road crash in 2018) are the main ones. Plus, many don't think the bridge would pay off cause Sicily and Calabria are not the most productive regions of Italy (let's put it this way), and they think Sicily would be still too far apart from the rest of Italy to justify a car or a train trip till down there, despite Sicily's population of 5 millions, many travelling between its main cities and Rome and Milan and it being a major touristic destination (it may be underrated among foreigners, but rest assured Italians know it). Just yesterday the queues on the A2 to embark in Reggio were all over the radios, but some still think the bridge is not a worth investment. Furthermore, many Northerners are opposed to it cause it is in the South, so bigoted regionalism adds to it as well. Not only them, but also many locals would prefer to put it on hiatus so that they would invest more on Sicilian and Calabrian infrastructures (which truly need an upgrade btw, think that the Ionian railway Reggio Calabria-Taranto is still operated with diesel locomotives and still single rail, and that 2 populated cities like Catania, 300k, and Palermo, 600k, are connected by a curvy line prone to landslides). As you can see, it's a social and financial problem more than a scientifical one, and I think that the atmosphere of slow decline Italy as a big country has been experiencing since 20 years at least plays a huge part in this

Like the review of your trip. I use since many years the same wagons (ICN Deluxe Sleeper) on the easter leg (Milan - Lecce). I'm aware they are quiet old (some slightly refurbished) in comparison to the Couchette Sleepers. But I like the plenty of room you have, also for luggage. I'm used to travel alone or as a couple and we always have at least 1 airplane case and a some other smaller trolley or rucksack per person (horror in a double deck ÖBB NJ cabin!) Had also once the problem with the A/C not working for part of the trip: annoying. And I agree with your critic on the poor breakfast and onboard restoration standard they still have. At least on the Milano - Lecce route. You confirmed an entry on my bucket list: Sicily.

We had something similar in the UK, with the 'Night Ferry' sleeper train between London and Paris/Brussels up until 1980. At the Dover ferry port the carriages were split up and shunted onto a ferry with train tracks, where they were chained into position, with the reverse happening at Dunkirk on the other side of the Channel. Very noisy for anyone trying to sleep on the train! In addition, the ferry ports had a lock gate system to cope with tides so it could be a slow procedure.

I’ve just been on the Siracusa portion in a couchette. The coaches were older. The toilets were locked out at Villa San Giovanni. Probably because they emptied onto the tracks. They were locked until leaving Messina. A long time with the loading and unloading on the ferry. The only respite was being able to use the ones on the ferry for the relatively short actual crossing. But a well worth fascinating journey.

I was 18 years old, going to visit my family in Piedimonte Etneo ( on the slope of Mount Etna...) and I could not believe my eyes when the train entered the ferry!. I then traveled from Kopenhagen to Malmö and the same thing happened, the train boarded a ferry!. I don't know in that year how many train-ferry lines existed, but I did take those two. Amazing, is it not?

It's almost impossible not to have at least 10 minutes delays on these trains. One train I took from Pisa to Lamezia arrived 3 hours late. HOWEVER, another train I took about 4 years later arrived on time, it was 5 am, and the car we were supposed to be renting wasn't available until 7.

@@thealitaliaa7714 rail joints do make a "clickity-clack" sound but it's a different sound, and it's not constant, it's actually satisfying. Sounds to me with this constant knocking sound like the wheels just needed a lathe, definitely a flat spot, that was the sound of the wheel being off-balance and not perfectly round, so every time it hit the flat spot it makes that clunk.

You know, I know Europe is not exactly the most AC friendly region of the world, being how uncommon it is across a large portion of it, but man, they really have no excuse not having it. Especially in the sleeper coaches. You pay the most for the sleepers, it is almost like a defacto first/premium class. On top of it, when it is a transit system running intercity/national services in which their nation is known for getting really high and bad heat spells, they always should prioritize implementing quality AC throughout all of their sets. It makes me wonder if it is just because they're being cheap, or if they have a legitimate reason. Otherwise, this would be a relaxing, neat and fun trip to be sure!
@NonstopEurotrip
