Very good explanation and easy to follow. Have an exam where we gotta do this by hand and this was very helpful to learn from, my professor is not very good with explanations.

@Hamish767 x1, x2, x3,..xn is the standard notation for the scalar variables in a vector x (usually bolded). x,y,z is usually used for 3D coordinates.

@Hamish767 using x1, x2, and x3 is necessary for applying the concept in n-dimensions. there aren't an infinite amount of letters, but conceptually there are an infinite amount of numbers. this resulting in you having the knowledge about how to solve an equation with any number of variables, however long it might take you by hand...
