In order for you to stop people from adding you to the group automatically without your knowledge, you would need to go into Whatsapp group and change the privacy settings.
Now this can be done by tapping on the 3 dots more button at the top right hand corner in the WhatsApp chat screen, then from the popup menu, choose Account, and select Privacy, then change the Groups setting from Everyone to Contacts Only, and that's it.
