The withdrawal of The Thames Television was one of the biggest mistake in the history of commercial broadcasting

The creation of the ITC and the loss of Thames was the death of ITV. They were too busy thinking about making money with Carlton focussing more on buying other TV companies than making their own output. When your best original comission is Police Camera Action the alarm bells should be ringing. How ironic that Thames merged with Talkback to become the biggest independent programme maker in the country.

In a few weeks times, it'll be ITV's 60th anniversary. If ITV are going to continue to deliver fantastic programmes, then the ITV Franchise Auction has to be brought back. The programmes I enjoy watching on ITV are the ones that are only produced by Yorkshire Television, LWT, Granada, Anglia, Tyne Tees, Border, Central etc. Programmes such as The X Factor should disappear for good as they are only produced by production companies and The X Factor is produced by a company that was once part of the ITV network and it was THAT same television company (Thames Television) for making excellent weekday programmes such as This Is Your Life, The Bill, This Week, Mr Bean, Strike It Lucky, Minder, Rumpole of the Bailey, Des O'Connor Tonight, Wish You Were Here, The Sooty Show etc. Thames is currently producing programmes that that on the weekends, which seems so ridiculous. There are so many people in this country who miss the old days of ITV, but it's especially the people of London who really miss Thames Television. Bringing back the ITV Franchise Auction and Thames Television in particular will make a VERY huge difference because it means a lot to us when we hear the words, "This is Thames from London". It would be great to hear those words again in the 21st century, but the process has to be done sooner rather than later.

8:58 Yup, documentaries and dramas were affected. There was no replacement for "This Week" after Thames, and Granada cancelled "World in Action". There are fewer dramas, however at least some survived (Inspector Morse becoming Lewis and then Endeavour for example)

Until it became second to the last independent franchisee since the failed UTV Ireland channel in the neighboring Republic caused UTV sold to ITV plc (the combined Carlton and Granada) leaving STV with two franchises the last ones not being part of ITV plc

"I predict that Sunrise will be bankrupt in 1994." Ironically, GMTV had made several requests to the ITC to lower its annual fee than they pledged to pay during the franchise awards!

Liam Mustapha GMTV and Carlton made those bids and should have been forced to pay those amounts or go bankrupt. What was the point in taking Thames & TV-am off the air especially Thames.

To be honest, the ITA, the IBA and the ITC were just a lot of overpaid bureaucrats who created this mess time and time again, destroying companies and jobs and giving no help to the start ups. LWT was an utter mess and Thames was asked to be ready to put an emergency service in place for the weekends. And what did LWT turn into? ATV London. The company the upper class ITA didn't want. TV-am should have been forced to take a news service from ITN right from the start. It was an embarrassment watching David frost's drivel going on and on and on and yet no one from the IBA got involved. It should have taken management out of the ITV big 5 companies on a temporary basis to get it running a proper service. But no, the overpaid IBA just sat there shrugging their shoulders and just left them to it and let it die on air. ATV broken up and for what? Because they didn't have a bloody studio in Nottingham when all it needed was a news operation but no. Change the name, spend millions on a studio complex that was never needed and in the end the whole thing sold to the University of Nottingham. So much for the neglected badly served people in the East Midlands because it's all coming out of Birmingham again. And then they destroy the whole system by taking Thames Television off the air by a company who made programme promises on the back of a fag packet. But it's all history now. But then isn't that story of management of all UK industry who've screwed the whole thing up but managed to take big salaries, big pensions and big dividends!!!

Okay, this is very confusing. What's up with Independent Television back then? Why would they uses franchises? How did the structure work? I'm American.
@gavin-uk4094
@gavin-uk4094 7 жыл бұрын
Hi MrWEWE5, Great question! I'm British, and I'll try my best to answer your questions. Since the start of ITV in 1955, separate regional TV franchises were granted by a publicly-owned company that was created by Parliament, called the 'Independent Television Authority' (ITA), to 15 regional commercial companies - forming a federation which together was known as ITV. Unlike the situation in the US, ITV was not allowed by the ITA to form a unitary network, and there were no 'affiliates'. As hardly any countries outside the US had commercial TV, the ITA was keen to be one of the first to learn from the America experience of commercial TV by bringing its best features to Britain (a non-BBC network that would be popular, well-funded and bring some much-needed competition to British broadcasting), whilst trying to avoid what it saw as a few avoidable mistakes. Over the decades, the ensuing competition and generous funding helped to make British TV some of the most varied and innovative in the world. The ITA's plan was to copy some of the most successful elements of US commercial television, such as ensuring that each area had its own commercial TV company (through regional rather than local stations), and encouraging commercial funding of TV programmes (through spot advertising, but not with programme sponsorship, which was banned) - but in a planned system, overseen by a publicly-owned authority that was accountable to Parliament, which intended to prevent the formation of all-powerful or dominant commercial networks (in the way that ABC, NBC and CBS were - perhaps wrongly - regarded by ITA at the time), with accompanying affiliates. The reason for such a system was that it was feared that a large, unitary commercial network might overwhelm the popular, publicly-owned but more poorly-funded (and much older) BBC - which was, and continues to be, funded by a special BBC levy on all UK households with a TV set - a public funding system which is now common throughout Europe, Japan, India and some other places. Ironically, the BBC today is much better funded than it was in 1955, and now runs a wide range of TV and radio networks & both regional & local stations and the international BBC World Service (radio) in many languages, ALL financed by its TV Licence Fee). Back in 1955, Parliament wanted the BBC to face competition for audiences, but not competition for revenue. That situation continues today. ITV has now changed beyond recognition, and is now in effect a single company (with owned-and-operated stations throughout the UK, but still no affiliates). In Britain today, there are now hundreds of commercially-funded TV and radio channels, but ITV and the BBC's most popular TV channel, BBC One, remaining Britain's most popular channels, with BBC One often coming out on top (and BBC One dominates the ratings for most sports coverage and throughout the Christmas period, with clever scheduling, a galaxy of stars and - mostly American - blockbuster movies! The BBC (TV & radio) still has absolutely no commercial breaks or commercial advertising of any sort on its UK channels (though its many international channels, which can't be received in the UK, are commercially funded). I've digressed quite a bit - and I hope my answer isn't too rambling - but I hope that at least it's gone some way to answering your question! :)
