Its a bit smaller than we expected... - Xiaomi 12s Ultra Camera Sensor Teardown!

Xiaomi has a REALLY big camera... lens. But is the Camera itself as large as they say? They only way to find out for sure is to open it up and measure it for ourselves! Today we are taking apart the brand new flagship 12s Ultra from Xiaomi. We are going to measure the worlds largest smartphone sensor - and see how big it really is. Is Xiaomi's "true one inch sensor" really 1 inch? I have my doubts...

Small camera sensor naming conventions are fairly insane. Small sensors are named after the dimensions of a hypothetical glass tube that would surround the sensor, as if they were a 1950's Vidicon tube. Typical 1" sensor size is actually 13.1 x 9.8mm.

Now here's a thought. Switching inch measurements over to rectangle diagonal instead of tube diameter would just confuse everyone. What if, hear me out, we switched to centimeters instead. Since no one measures in centimeters right now there'd be no confusion AND you could switch to a better way of measuring like diagonal, area or circumference
@arouraios4942
@arouraios4942 Жыл бұрын
Also manufacturers could include both measurements, one in inches and one in centimeters. You aren't forced to get used to a different way of measuring but you do have the more 'accurate' measurement if you want to use it

I'd say the easiest is just place a label at the end of the measurement i.e. 1" senor tube radius or 1" sensor diagonal or whatever. But lets be real, they are intentionally using that measurement for marketing, even if we think of a better way to avoid misleading, they for sure wont pick it up.
@simioni
@simioni Жыл бұрын
Diagonal is the worst system every invented to measure imaging devices. It's meaningless by itself, and even if accompanied by aspect ratio it makes comparing devices very hard. Area is much better, at least for screens. But area is also trickier for cameras since it's difficult to produce non-round lenses. So a lot of cameras have sensors that are actually larger than the image circle of their lens can cover, but of course this extra area is useless for capturing light. So the only true measure of what a camera system can capture is the image circle, which is a lens measure really, but is the only indicator of the maximum size of the lens that a given sensor can cover.

Interesting to see the construction - thank you for sacrificing a phone. When it comes to the lenses the necessary aspherical surfaces are quite difficult to manufacture in glass and the material will hardly make any measurable difference - by all means, most prescription glasses nowadays are plastics rather than glass, giving lower weight, lower cost of manufacturing and the possibility to form very advanced progressive lens shapes. When it comes to sensors, measuring the outer circle and the diagonal are essentially the same, since any diagonal will be the same length as the diameter of the outer circle.

@@euro_rfx4499 Probably. Since the lenses limit the aperture to a few millimeters and "distort" the image into the correct shape, a full on daylight shot is probably too much for a naked sensor to handle. Even if it could handle that much brightness, probably we would still get a fully white shot, because, as I said, it needs "treated" data/image when it comes to angle, exposure, focus, otherwise it would only be able to see in a binary way: whether there is light or not in each one of its "pixels". DISCLAIMER: I'm not a photographer, neither an image/photo technician or stuff like that. Measuring the image sensor by the size of a theoretical circle that it can fit in *does* still make sense and will continue to make sense for as long as the lenses are circular. The "1 inch" size of the sensor defines the characteristics of the lens that you will need in order to be able to have a full-frame image without a vignette.
@branbroken
@branbroken Жыл бұрын
Except that vignette is only occuring if you have a sensor larger than the projected image circle and you arent performing any cropping. Most manufacturors are intentionally doing the opposite and ensuring they have the sharpest portions of the image circle filling the sensor.

Hello Zach, the term "1-inch-class" comes from the time of vacuum glasstube sensors of TV-cameras. A glasstube with an outer diameter of 1" could hold a sensor of exactly THIS size shown in your video. ALL electronic cameras with an "1-inch-sensor" (Panasonic TZ-101 and 202, Sony's RX-100's series etc.) have exactly the same size of sensors! *O.k., I watched while typing. The solution came later.* 😂

Having had many smartphone cameras (including the 108MP Samsung many raved about being the best smartphone camera) I have to say this Xiaomi is the best smartphone camera I've had. For qualification I've been in to photography for over a decade and have a couple of high end cameras and was never a fan of the image processing style most smartphones go for (over hdr, vibrant colours) so your mileage may vary, but I'm loving the 12S Ultra. Thanks for the teardown, from being a small child I always loved taking things apart, but as I was always better at that than putting them back together, it's good to see someone else ruin their phone for me = )

Can you check the projected image circle of the lens? It may take a crop of the 1in sensor, to reduce the size of lens required. The active area of the sensor should be compared, not the raw silicon.

Fun Fact about 1inch Sensor's It's a name from very early days before digital Sensors even where a thing. The first Cameras with sensors worked similar to a tube TV and the "1 Inch" refers to the diameter of the tube, in other words the sensor has to be smaller than 1 inch Edit: He explains it later in the video, commented earlier

They should have updated the sensor size standard the same as they did for displays. A 21" CRT monitor has a much smaller viewing area than a 21" LCD and we quickly got used to it. The obvious solution is to abandon imperial units altogether. There will be no doubt what a 15 mm sensor means.

Cool to see such a large sensor in a phone and the actual sensor in the video! I wonder if the lens totally covers it. The recent Sony camera phone with the same sized sensor managed only a portion with the optics they used. 8:22 Yeah, I do think camera sensors should be measured differently. I'd say crop factor is fine (where the commonly known36x24mm "full-frame" sensor is 1x) though it doesn't account for aspect ratio. Or simply stating dimensions like 36x24mm but it's not the easiest thing to vocalize, especially when the dimensions aren't whole numbers which is often the case.

Did you know that 1-inch sensors are actually way smaller than 1-inch? The diagonal of these sensors only measures 0.63″ and we can blame the old cathode-ray tubes (CRT) technology for this misleading marketing technique.

Great video, very fun and informative! DPReviewTV did a video recently about sensor sizes. Other channels and sites have pointed this out in the past. It's my opinion sensors should be advertised by area. So a "I inch" sensor would be known by it's area in mm (approx. 10 X 13mm ,being generous again) so it's area would be 130mm. Advertisers and camera companies could call it a 130 sensor. Seems reasobaly sensible and a lot more accurate!

1 inch sensor has nothing to do with one inch in size its confusing i know ! The name of a 1" digital sensor should more accurately be read as "one inch video camera tube equivalent" sensor. Current digital image sensor size descriptors are the video camera tube equivalency size, not the actual size of the sensor. For example, a 1" sensor has a diagonal measurement of 16 mm.

Well yeah, most image sensors are 3:4 I guess. But in my opinion it still should be measured either side by side or diagonal from corner to corner. Measuring by the lens or module doesn't make sense to me. In the end, the sensors don't capture the whole circle of light that travels through the lens but it captures a rectangle from it.

1" sensor is different from specific 1x1 sensor. You are comparing apple to pear as one is sensor for most standard format 3:4 and the other sensor is specifically 1:1 format. they are both 1" but for different picture format and if you use 1x1 sensor for 3:4 format photos you only use part of that sensor that is equal to standard 1" sensor
