What critics don't understand is that many enthusiast's have commented on here because they hold, as I do, many memories as children of days spent outside in what seemed like endless summers and indeed snowy winters enjoying an innocent hobby with friends before entering the rat race. It wasn't just about collecting numbers. No it was the thrill of the chase, the saving of dinner and pocket money and buying a ticket to far off stations and depots and not telling our parents. By the age of 15 in 1982 I had visited dozens of places from Edinburgh to Bristol, London to Newcastle and most places in between. At that age and in that era I felt I had seen the world! When I see a Deltic it takes me back to a cold winter morning just south of Preston circa 1981 when 55 022 Royal Scots Grey thundered past under Skew Bridge, a rare sight round these parts of this mystical Class! Its not just about lumps of metal, its a link to our childhood and the short sighted cynics cant take that away.

I may be far younger, just a young boy of 21, but I have many fond memories of walking up to Oxford Station (and later, Taplow, after my family moved to Berkshire) and watching the Networkers and HSTs thunder past, and of the many journeys into London watching the myriad of older trains rush by the window, going off to who-knows-where! I know that in a few more decades they'll all be long gone, but I can hope that at least some of them might end up in museums.

I know, my grandfather told me stories of when BR blue was in full swing, and coal trains used to pass through Bangor station on the way to the nearby power station. But now Wales is an empty shell of industry, I don't understand they have created more pollution from all the lorry's on the road, it would cut down on carbon. But oh no Greenpeace has to have their way. The only freight left in North Wales is the Flasks from a nearby Nuclear Power Station.

People seem to be forgetting that, at the end of the day, these are just machines that have served the purpose they were built for, and after their usefulness, their material worth was more than any preservation attempt was able to fund. I mean come on, it's a shame that a 22 or a baby deltic wasn't preserved, but it isn't exactly a shame that all 228 near identical choppers weren't preserved
@TheTankTacticianofEngland

+Tom Salmon You can make this argument for steam engines as well then, so many 8F's and Black fives were preserved across the country. People will save what they want regardless of how many are out there because of personal and group taste, hell I want to try and save another Class 45 Peak that I know is abandoned at a preservation railway. We preservationists are crazy, that is true but we love what we do.

+TheTankTactician i don't like to start youtube fights but no matter how precious or rare something is the law of conservation of matter comes into play, when we need more material the old will have to be scrapped regardless of preservation attemps

Well, it would be nice to have at least one preserved. At the end of the day, while these are machines that have served their purpose, they're all pieces of history. Some of them might be renowned for their service lives. Maybe some of them carried famous people or were involved in famous events. Perhaps they were famous for their productivity or their long lives. Think about why there's still some 37s in service today, and why so many of them _are_ preserved!
@conductoredwards7217

So we should just leave them to decay, I don't think so, the Welsh industry is dead because of trying to be "ECO friend" when these poor heroes are rusting away. They could be use to cut down on lorry produced carbon. Bring those Golden years back.

Seeing this was pretty sad, but at least these locos all had a good life. Some of their brethren live on in preservation, and that's important too. So while it's sad seeing several generations of locomotives cut up, it is an unfortunate side effect of progress, in politics, finance, and technology.

Seems a real shame to see these classic British locomotives cut up into scrap. It also seems a shame britain is incapable of even producing its own railway stock and having to import all this euro crap we have now. Shame it couldn't have been a similar story to the 47s, where a selected few were reengined, improved and reclassified as 57s. Also I know this is a bit off topic but, the new HS2 rail link, a project we have no money to produce, is absolute rubbish, and only cuts about 10 minutes off the original journey time. The people in charge of Britain's railway need to get their act together.
@formidable38
@formidable38 9 жыл бұрын
HighlandRegion Just to put another angle on the HS2 subject though. Its not all about "cutting 10 minutes". The WCML is now running at near full capacity, it cannot take any more traffic. HS2 will greatly free up extra capacity for freight and passenger trains on the WCML.

Touching...Poignant...Sad. The sense of loss is presented in such a way that even those (like me) who know almost nothing about steamtrains will shed a tear. Perfect song, as well. It seems like they are only empty shells of great locomotives, and at the end, the way the numbers were leaning against the wall, seemed like tombstones, the death markers of the steamtrain era.

I worked at Metro cammell in the 90's at the time they were building the night sleeper (white elephant) stock, sat all over the country for years looking for an owner, some of the finest carriages ever built rotting, the laminates were peeling off and 1000's of mattresses got chucked, the rats had been at them. One Guy did camper conversion with some of the parts from the skip.... and there were many many stair cases and halls carpets in the £75/SQ/MTR carpet that was used on the trains...

I find it funny when people ask to bring back Steam, you can see mainline steam almost every weekend at most major stations, if you know your timings. A lot of steam locomotives are also oil fired rather than coal. Also, consider the fact that the last train built in the UK was steam, only a few years ago, steam is alive and well.

@steamfandan It would have been cheaper to "modernise" the older locos than building new ones anyway. Retrofit them with Euro V compatible engines, higher output generators and new drive motors, while retaining their classic lines outside. It's a shame to see them go, but not every old train can be kept.

Time goes on the same things were said when the steam engines were scrapped and will no doubt be said when todays engines go.

All British built, all gone, now we have no facilities to build our own, we now have to rely on foreigners to build loco's for us, when at one time we were world leaders, sad sad sad, R.I.P Thanks for sharing, cheers...Bill

The large number of UK locomotives were converted to oil-firing after World War II. A fair number of UK locos are still oil fired, or have the option to be coal or oil fired. Either way the number of UK locomotives that are oil fired on the main line (or otherwise) today is irrelevant, the point being made was "We can't have steam because coal pollutes the air too much" - which isn't true, as we DO have steam, and we DO have alternatives to coal.
