In all seriousness, I love Gru’s character development in this movie. He goes from being a (wannabe) criminal who adopts kids to use them to risking his whole career and life to save these kids that he had fallen in love with. It’s so sweet.

To be fair this scene puts into perspective that Gru truly would be a threatening villain. The movie plays him out as a joke but in reality he would be a genuine problem if he didn't change his mind for his kids.

What makes this so funny and at the exact same time terrifying is that Gru always had this in him, he didn’t actually want to be evil, he just wanted to have something he could commit to, he’s passable at best when it comes to evil since he isn’t actually committed to being a villain, but when he gets the girls he now has what he’s always wanted, something to commit to, so when Vector gets in the way he throws away the goofy funny villain mask and reveals his loving father side, he effortlessly thwarts Vector after this showing a level of competence he never once had.
