This is Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo City, Philippines.
It is a celebration to commemorate the arrival of Baby Jesus in the island that eventually turned the culture and faith of the community for the better -- like how the story went to the rest of the world ...
It is such a great privilege to witness and cover this great event in the Visayas Island. It is then with utmost pride that we highly recommend to local and foreign tourists alike to also experience this festival of all festivals! While it is a celebration of culture and faith, it is very much a celebration of life, of triumph amidst difficulties, of rising above the storm, of going and moving on, of climbing the highest mountains with vigor, optimism and strong faith in our hearts.
Yours truly decided to borrow the music sang by a fellow Ilonggo composer and singer Raffy Buenavidez not only because of its beat but also because of its message. He composed and sang this song after the strongest typhoon Haiyan devastated the region to give encouragement to everyone. The title "Bangon, Tindog, Sulong Western Visayas" can be loosely translated to Get Up, Rise Up, Move Forward Western Visayas.
When we celebrate the Dinagyang Festival, we celebrate not only the arrival of Sto Nino or Baby Jesus. We celebrate how He protects us from the wickedness and snares of the devil. His love for us transforms us. His power lifts us up when we fall, more so at times we feel desperate and hopeless. Fueled by optimism and hope only He can give... we Rise Up and Move On.
And we Ilonggos, just know how to celebrate this kind of shift in our lives -- we sing, dance and exclaim that We Can!
Let this message of hope reverberate in our hearts and minds - always.
Mabuhay! Long Live Philippines!
Cheers,
Elma

Fantastic colourful costumes, happy smiling faces you would never guess from this how much devastation Yolanda caused in this area. The true resolve of the Pinoy shines through strongly. I love the music, so catchy and very apt for the video :-) Keep them coming

Hello Maam Elma, Congratulations for being the first Ilonggo to receive the TOSP (Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines) award in 1989! The video posted above is really good but the song was intended for the bangon western visayas after typhoon yolanda.. since the content of your video clips are all dinagyang festival, may i suggest that you change ur background music to hala bira Iloilo or other Hiligaynon songs thank you very much! pls. let us know soon so that we can share it on our social media pages madamo nga salamat and more power!

Hello AGboy! Thank you very much for that. Yes I am aware about the message of the song, I just thought that the "Bangon, Tindog, Sulong Western Visayas" - literally, does not only mean to rise up above the storm, that is, after our beloved region was devastated by typhoon Yolanda. It also means to rise up and move forward, together, towards progress and development of our region. I think the message of the song has a double meaning: in times of devastation, and in times of construction - both for the benefit of our community, and for the progress and development of our city or region. Nevertheless, I am very willing to have another version, with another Hiligaynon song. I just thought that the Hala Bira was already used several times. Let me do more research and will re-edit for another version, and yes, definitely, I’ll let you know ☺ daw nami mag-compose na lang haw? Haha! Madamo gid nga salamat! God bless us!

Badass culture. How old do they trace these traditions or ancestry back. Just curious. The women are gorgeous and happy.

It's back to the original inhabitants of the Islands, the Aetas people, definitely descendants of the Lapita that migrated from Taiwan or Southern China. At around the 1200, the Datus, or 10 chiefs from Borneo migrated to the Philippines and met these indigenous people, they agreed to live in peace but separately from each other. Story has it that years later, a famine devastated the Aetas people, who then came down from the mountains and asked the Malay Datus for food and aid. In return, they offered them dance. Through the years of course, a Catholic twist was slightly added, but the gist of it is still the same.
