Evaluation doesn't tell the whole story. Sometimes evaluation is even but you need a series of ultra precise moves to hold which the engine can find and that's why it evaluates position as even but from human perspective it's nearly lost.

About the Vidit game, Levy says "the clock didn't play a big role in this game" but it's really only partially true. Vidit REALLY took his time and it really looked like he was heading himself into time trouble. The only reason Alireza didn't resign much earlier is because he pushed Vidit to time trouble by playing faster than usual to make him blunder. Otherwise the position is truely hopeless by the time he's down an exchange, and if not for the clock he'd resign immediatly Also, Alireza's time usage in the early parts of the game was quite unwise. He played Bd7 very quickly, and same goes for Qb6, both of which are mistakes. So in fact, this is one of the only games where the clock was interesting and played a big role.
@bowxfire5275
@bowxfire5275 26 күн бұрын
True. At one point i think around the move 12, Vidit had reached 58 minutes on his clock while Alireza with his Shervani had ~1 Hr 40 minutes. Position wise vidit was winning but time wise he was not, at that point he had 99.5% accuracy i believe while Alireza had 87.5%

For science - can you title the next video “candidates round 7” or something similar. I find it fascinating that the algo favors catchy titles and thumbnails and the possibility that humans are more likely to click it. But you mentioned your watch time being high. People who clicked because they were intrigued likely wouldn’t stick around after realizing it wasn’t some spicy drama.

Here's what Wikipedia says about Indian names: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_name Long story short, it seems to vary. Vidit is his given name and Gujrathi is his surname, Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali are their gives names and Rameshbabu their patronym, and Gukesh is his given name and Dommaraju his surname.

@@meltonalisbo2864in fact the tournament contrived to obtain ratings for firouzja did not count, & it didn't matter - he entered a different tournament and won Don't sit on your rating like an egg expecting to hatch a qualification spot, folks. So was really pursuing the circuit qualification btw, which didn't pan out - the rating was a fallback. Alas, Firouzja was busy playing chess.

We say "first name" and "last name", but really what they are is "given name" and "family name"/"surname". The comma format standardizes the order. So the family name comes first, followed by the given name. This is the case regardless of the language/culture of origin for the name. Usually, the comma is there to indicate that the order has been reversed from how they usually say/write it. But sometimes people use the comma incorrectly. For example, Arjun Erigaisi is listed as "Erigaisi Arjun" in the FIDE database. Erigaisi is his family name, so it comes first. But there is no comma, which suggests he would normally refer to himself as "Erigaisi Arjun", putting his family name first. (The same rules apply to Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa and Rameshbabu Vaishali, although the FIDE database seems to get the order wrong.) On the other hand, Magnus Carlsen is listed as "Carlsen, Magnus" in the FIDE database. Carlsen is his family name, so it comes first. The comma indicates that when he refers to himself, he would say the reverse - "Magnus Carlsen". Usually, cultures which put the family name first will refer to each person by their family name to be respectful, and only by their given name if you're personally quite close. Depending on the culture, there may also be an exception for circumstances where multiple members of the same family are present, but often you distinguish family members by titles similar to Mr. and Mrs. However, those familiar with international and internet culture are generally understanding of the differing norms, and will not be upset if you refer to them by their given name.

There's actually several different ways that names can work in India, and it is (mostly) dependent on where in India you are from. Vidit, Pragg, and Gukesh actually have three completely different name formats despite the fact that all three of them are from India. In the case of Vidit, his full name is Vidit Santosh Gujrathi. Of the three of them, Vidit's is the closest to the Western style naming convention, but it's not exactly the same. Vidit is his given name, and Gujrathi is his surname, but Santosh isn't a "middle name" in the Western sense. It's a patroym - which means he inherited the name of his father. Santosh is his father's given name, so it became his patronym. Pragg's full name is Rameshbabu Praggnanandaa. His sister's full name is Rameshbabu Vaishali. In both cases, Rameshbabu is not their family name, but is instead a patroym - Rameshbabu is the name of Pragg and Vaishali's father, so the two of them inherited the name. The two of them actually don't have a surname at all. This is common in Tamil Nadu - the state that Vaishali and Pragg are from. Fun fact: Anand is also from Tamil Nadu, so his name follows the same convention. "Anand" is his given name, and "Viswanathan" was the name of his father. Finally, Gukesh's full name is Dommaraju Gukesh. Unlike all of the other Indians, he doesn't have a patronym. Dommaraju is his family name, and Gukesh is his given name. Since it's ordered family name first, and given name last, this can be pretty roughly equated to the way Chinese names are formatted.
