Mate, for the real Porirua experience you should have headed east towards Cannons Creek and Waitangirua. The cultural and community experience is far more genuine than the sanitised shopping centre.

You should not be too offended. You have to remember that 98+% of NZ'ers do not speak your language (and only 2% fluently for part Maori!). Apart from it being a waste of time for us, the politics of it is painful. That aside there are groups of people who enjoy the virtue signalling of it all.

Porirua is much better than back in the days, born and raised in Porirua. Can only visit one day to see for yourself it’s not as bad as what people make it out be. If you’ve never lived here you’ll never know what it’s really like. It’s just as normal as everywhere else in nz. Outta respect for my hometown. No hidden agendas just people trying to make life work as best as they can. Very family orientated and all about their children and youth proud of their culture, heavily into sports especially rugby and netball. All love for every walks of life.

I grew up in Porirua back in the 60s until the early 80's. I lived in the area's of Waitangirua and Cannons creek. The Mongrel Mob had a big present back then, but as kids we didn't see a big deal in the gang present. I loved my growing up in Porirua(the good and the bad times) because what i had experienced in those times was that people were real, we (the whole community)all looked out for one another, helped one another out (in many ways), plus there was no major racism - verbal attacks towards one another back then, mainly due to people were friendlier and more accepting of others. The community was of mixed cultures, mainly consisting of Maori and European/Pakeha. I am Kiwi of Maori and European/Pakeha lineage . Waitangirua Mall was newly built back in the 70's, to us the complex was huge and flash....... our new hang out place. Cannons Creek shops was epic, the bakery use to sell 5cent Sally Luns(Boston buns); Our Place(little community building) was new back then - kids and adults had a place to play pool, watch movies or just hang out. The schools , Windley, Tairangi, Porirua College, Brandon Intermediate(especially the Poly club) and Glenview primary were good schools including most of the teachers. Our community wasn't rich in the monetary sense, but we had something far more rewarding and that was our rich NZ culture and the solidarity of a great community unit. For me, growing up in Porirua back in the day, was the best.

Great video! I haven't been to Porirua in a few years, I might have to take the train up there on a day off sometime just to walk around and get a bite to eat. Te Rauparaha Arena has a lot of different sports facilities, but it's probably best known for its excellent public swimming pools, something that Wellington seems to be sorely missing. By the way, kudos on your Te Reo pronunciation skills, dare I say they're even better than those of a lot of kiwis!

There are a lot of people here who have been dealt a squarely unfair hand, and a lot of childhood trauma comes out of that - but poor people are kinder than rich people, and I have never felt in any kind of danger here.
