My mates told me silky’s are garbage.. “blades are weak and snap”.. They got quiet watching mine cut our firewood the whole trip 😂. Silky’s have hard blades but if you treat them right they’ll last, and replacement blades are only like $30.

Couldn’t agree more. I have used the cheap foldable saws, Agawa Canyon 21”, and last year switched to a silky. No comparison. The Agawa is great but it can easily bite the digits and the blade tends to bind (at least for me). I am a silky fan from here on out as well! Nice review!

One problem I kept having with the buck saw was smacking my hand. Happened more than once. I love the Silky. Hopefully I can keep up my record of no snapped blades. Fingers crossed.

I started my saw journey with a 3 foot, 2 man crosscut saw and soon graduated to a 21” Bob Dustrude quick bucksaw and then moved up to the 24”. Then, not long ago, Agawa popped up on the radar. I have all 3 sizes of that saw. I love my buck saws and I even made 2 similar to yours. I do have a couple of Chinesium folding saws (yours doesn’t fly as well as mine lol) because they do fill a void and also I’m not a totally closed minded A-hole lol. The main reason I’ll most likely never go team silky is purely because the replacement blades are proprietary and are ridiculously expensive compared to the replacement cost of the entire saw ($47 for a GomBoy 240 blade and not too much more for the whole saw). I can walk into any hardware store and get a replacement blade for any of my folding bucksaws for the price of a pizza 😂

I do love my bucksaws. Perhaps I was being a bit dramatic saying I was ditching them. But at this point I much prefer the Silky. Those Agawa saws are nice. I do like those. After I break a few blades I may change my mind about my Silky preference. I like changing my mind. No sense in having one if you can't change it

@@BackpackingWithJason Hey Jason, can you help me decide on the Big Boy or Gomboy? I live up North. When I go in the woods, usually in a canoe, I need to process firewood at camp to stay warm most of the day and night. I was thinking the Big boy might be better for two reason; burn less calories and be able to process a greater volume of firewood. The Gomboy would be so much more compact..... Thanks Jason, I appreciate your opinion.

Enjoyed this video muchly! I have carried the Silky Pocket Boy for years in my trail maintenance pack. Perfect for quick, small jobs. I also enjoy push / pull blade design of the Laplander which I typically always have with me. But I’ve have been debating whether to get the Big Boy as well because its range of use is clearly greater than Laplander. And now I’m sold! So thank you for posting this.👍

@@ItsGoodintheWoodssounds like you've used the boreal from the video, so, ignoring ease of deployment, which cuts wood faster or easier? Boreal 21 or the silky? The silky would be safer I think, I've busted knuckles several times using the Boreal, but I'm curious which cuts wood faster /easier One thing I like about the boreal is it is easy and cheap to replace the blade on it
@ItsGoodintheWoods
@ItsGoodintheWoods 4 ай бұрын
Boreal wins hands down for cheaper and easier blade replacement. I really can’t say which is faster, I would say they are quite close, Especially with a dry wood blade. But I can say, when you get a good solid two hand grip on the silky, it’s really fast. So when it comes to cutting a lot of bigger stuff, I think the silky might win. Just on comfort alone. No doubt the Boreal is a real nice saw. Can’t go wrong.

I recently bought the Outback Pocketboy for my car’s bugout bag. Haven’t used it yet, but it looks like it will hold up well with proper use. Was considering the Gomboy variant, but I wasn’t digging the curved blade, and I’m also carrying an axe with it for if the situation calls for bigger cuts. Btw, I caught that Happy Gilmore reference 😂

Silky saws are Awesome...! Buck & bow saws are a bit of a pain. I have yet to see one that will out perform a Silky Saw. I find that my Silky Bigboy 2000 is the most versatile and paired with a thick blade Machete... The axe or hatchet stays home! For the same carry weight, the Silky Machete combination will do more for you than an axe. Thanks for the video...
@ItsGoodintheWoods

I agree. At this point I very rarely bring an axe along. For the most part I find it is not needed. Winter trips and serious comfort canoe trips, I bring one. Other than that it stays at home. Thanks for watching and commenting

I ended up with the Silky Gomboy because I saw it as the right size for a backpacking use case. I've broken the tip off. Twice. I feel like they need to add some hardener or something to their steel. Or maybe I just need to pay better attention when sawing? Another saw I've gotten a lot of use from is the Sven saw. It performs well and feels easier to use than the Silky.
