WOW! I got to spend about 12 hours there in 1977. Longest 12 hours of my life l thought. I was in cell 4 on tier 4. Unpaid traffic ticket turned me into a hardened criminal. I knew the one guard from school so l lucked out there. I laughed, he laughed, got me a pack of cigarettes and a coffee, laughed some more. Got threatened with an ass-beating if l didn't quit laughing. Girlfriend's dad bailed me out (just before their family cook-out) and what a proud moment that was. Ahhh...good times.

The prisoners locked up on alcatraz Island had access to hot showers, the prison officials believed giving the inmates hot showers would make them not be able to withstand the freezing waters if they tried escaping.

I grew up in York, nothing can send you on the straight and narrow like your parents driving you past the old York Prison as a child and stopping out front so you can hear the prisoners scream and holler at you. I even know people who spent time there until the new Prison was built out by Mt Zion and Rte 30.

I live in NC now but do drive up at least once a year - I miss the food🫢🫢🫢😄😄😄😄. I’ve driven by the old prison often but was never told the story - till now! And thank you so much for the history lesson at the beginning - and I’m one of those who know that York we the first Capital of the new US!!!

"Foodloaf" makes me think of Nutraloaf, a food that was TECHNICALLY perfectly nutritionally complete, but was so hideous that its use was considered a punishment for inmates. While having all the nutrition an inmate might need, it's designed to taste as hideous as possible.

It's bugging me how you ask "why did such a small town need such a large prison?" Then later on, you accurately answer the question by addressing it as the York COUNTY prison. It didn't just serve the city, it served the entire county. Unsurprisingly, the county has more people than just the city alone. For a case in point, check out the Rehmeyer murder, which occurred around Winterstown in Southern York County, yet the trial was held at the York Courthouse and detainment of the accused was at the York Prison, as, again, the complex served the entire county, not just the city.

The Vänersborg town jail (Sweden) was turned into a condo. Once was shown a flat with the one cell bedrooms and two cell kitchen and livingroom. Guess it had been a hard work carving away 2-3 feet thick walls, but also you wouldn’t disturb neighbors with loud music.

Aren't Prisons in Scandinavia like nice hotels?
@Soundbrigade
@Soundbrigade 8 ай бұрын
@@ITSHISTORY Three different answers: There are prisons in Norway that looks like nice hotels, but there's a plan behind, giving the "guests" a lot of freedom but a hell lot of responsibility - they have to do all planning of their prison days themselves that enhances their social capabilities and when released very often leaves criminality behind. Michael Moore made a film about that once. Sweden isn't there yet, but those who committed less serious crimes have also a lot of freedom. In our town those prisoners run a company growing tomatoes, building park benches and also (very popular) hunting towers and selling them and these people, many with underlying problems like drug abuse or ADHD or whatever go nuts when the workshops close on weekends). Else I get it that much is about keeping the convicts away from the public, especially now when organized crimes (shootings and bombs) accelerate, but still giving the inmates a sort of useful way of getting away from crimes by studies or by working. A few years after Estonia got its freedom back an Estonia man took the ferry to Sweden, hoping to get many years in a Swedish prison hotel by killing a random person on the streets of Stockholm with a hammer. He was sentenced to life in prison, but the relatives to the murder victim petitioned the court and it was decided that the culprit had to serve the sentence in Estonia!!!! Btw. I'm coming to Dowtown Abbey ... Downers Grove to my granddatughters 5th birthday on Dec 18 and will leave on Jan 16, could we hire you as a personal guide maybe? We will spend most time in downtown Chicago.

Hey! I live in Wrightsville, just outside of York City. I did a lot of drinking at Alex's (Georges), just around the corner. I've met "Old-Timers" who did time in the old prison. The general consensus was, "That was one sweetheart of a prison"! Evidently, you could throw a line out of your cell window and an ally, on the ground, could tie whatever they wanted to the other end. These were guys with four-digit prison numbers in the new facility; I'm inclined to believe their tales.
