This TT could be a content goldmine ! New discs brakepads and drop links you can do yourself after your extensive training on the Jag :-) Just make sure you're safe if you're going to do it on your drive. In defence of main dealers : they have unbelievably high fixed costs which they attempt to recoup by performing simple maintenance tasks for premium parts cost and premium labour rates . With their hourly rates , they just aren't set up to investigate open ended problems. Most of the people in main dealers love cars and the front of house staff are good with people so no real surprise you had a good experience at Audi. Before you spend any more money you should decide what you want to do with the car on a scale between "use as a runaround for year" and ' restore to showroom" then you'll know where the money needs to be spent.

I'd love to see you attempt a couple of the fixes yourself. Great video Joel as usual.

Hey Joel i been following you since you had the Z4 great content as always, btw not because is the official dealer the service is better, i have a Z4, M2 and C8 corvette and i always do the services by myself, is better to learn how to do it, you get the knowledge and can save really good money also you know better you car and doesnt need help of another person like a mechanic. Sometimes is better to invite some friends have a beer and do the service having some fun with them 🤩 !

The kick you get from doing your own car servicing and repairs is worth far more than the money you save! The most important thing to get before starting work as far as I am concerned is getting a jack that is up to the job and axle stands. My lovely neighbour was killed under his car when it fell on him, so this issue is close to my heart. Go for it Joel and you won't regret it. As for Audi Aylesbury, it seems to me they price according to how dirty they're going to get doing the work!

Now take it to an Audi specialist for a health check, they will knock half the list of it. Nothing wrong with the coil springs they just have a bit of surface rust.

cam belt/water pump is advised to be changed on age as well as mileage - if not done in 5-6 yrs probably worth doing - again, at an indi you'll probably be looking at £400ish

Regarding your light not working... Audi's are renowned for this. My headlight o my A6 kept throwing an error to the dashboard saying it was out yet it was working perfectly. However, the sensor measures the resistance across the bulb and as the bulb ages this increases - which causes the issue. A new bulb solved it.

Be great to see you tackle some of the jobs Joel and then show the cost to fix it yourself vs the main dealers. Even on a modern car there are many jobs which can be done with a bit of research and fairly basic tools. Oh and the brake fluid - I changed mine for the first time recently and it was really easy. I’d highly recommend getting yourself a Gunson eazibleed kit for about £20 - it makes the job so easy to do by yourself. I changed mine in about an hour (longest bit was removing and refilling the wheels!) and the Gunson kit was brilliant 😊

£140 + per hour would be the main culprit for the hight prices quoted at AUDI MD but I'm guessing you already know that. 😉 FYI rear coil springs are super easy to change. Lift the rear of the car, undo & remove the bottom shock bolt to gently ease the rear subframe down and they just pop out. 👍

Joel don't just go off the mileage of the cambelt - the timeframe is important too. If it hasn't been changed for a few years it might still need doing even if the mileage between services is low. Check the state of the belt if you can.

Springs that aren't broken don't require replacement. Don't go down the same rabbit hole as the S Type - spend nothing on it bar a service.......fluids, filters, plugs and forget the rest. The art of cheap cars is spending as little as possible.

If I can believe my eyes and my memory, you showed a service bill from mid 2022 that included new spark plugs. Modern plugs last 40k to 60k, so you won't ned to change them just yet. The rear springs don't look too bad, maybe a quick clean and a coat with Hammerite or similar would be sufficient?

That’s a refreshing change about customer service from Audi (or any dealership for that matter). I was worried when I started watching that you were actually going to get it done there (!), so glad you didn’t. But a great way to get the full list of things to get done.

Main stealers

Do the work yourself mate. I changed the track rod ends on my Z4. I've got a video on my channel doing it. Definitely invest in a Blow Torch, I couldn't change them without it. But you'll need a decent one from toolstation. Cost me about 60 quid. I also done wishbone rear bushes. I saved an absolute fortune doing it myself and it was a great learning experience.

Audi quoted my niece £700 for front disks & pads on her Q3, i fitted her brembo disks & pads for £196 plus a 10 pack of beers.

Interesting to see you have a go at a few of those job. I'm not a mechanic but replaced the lower suspension arms on my old focus and it was a doddle. I just had to take it to the shop for tracking up. Go for it...

Airbag light problem will probably be the same as Alfas, where the seat is moved while the engine is running and the plug under the seat loses contact and throws a fault, I like many alfa owners just cut the plug off and delete it, wire it direct without the plug .

I think it would be good for all of us (mostly you) for you to do the suspension work yourself. You’ll learn a lot about your car, and you’ll have a lot more satisfaction knowing you can do it from now on.

Do the brakes and the brake fluid, definitely do an oil change and then fit a decent set of rubber. I’d also have a crack at a DIY wheel refurb. Keeps the costs down and it will be mechanically right. Fair play for getting new cars on the channel, it’s key to getting it to grow

Well done to audi, it’s refreshing to hear your comments about their attitude to you being positive. Secondly, you’re right about their prices for routine brake disc being extortionate, but it is what it is. I would love to see you tackle some jobs yourself and show that cheap cars with a bit of diy can be great cars to own and use.

My advice to you before tackling suspension bits. Buy some wd40 penetrating oil. Not normal wd40, penetrating oil. Be ready for stuck bolts. Undoing everything is the only difficult bit.

Great car and video. You can definitely do most of the work yourself. The front discs are easy. To do the rear suspension work get a decent jack and axle stands. You will need spring clamps to get the springs off safely. Get the right tools and be prepared to get dirty 😀

I'de bin working on TT's for years and they are great cars to work on aswell as to drive. The issues the stealers marked to be repared or changed you can very much do yourself......it's very easy. Changing the suspension springs to a 35 mm lowered version from Intrax or an adjustable suspencion set makes it even more sticky and puts more of the cars weight to front wheels and gives a better acceleration and throttle reaction. Change the wheels to 18 or 19 inch and tyres have to be an a brand. This makes the tt much better than it already is. Great your trying to keep the car going👍

Airbag light. undo connector, clean & reassemble. Easy job. Take the seat out for a good hoover too. Battery Earth is a must remove 👍👍

There is a bit of an art to running an old car. For example bother with the exhaust hangers but not the clamps, dont bother with the springs (its defects that make them snap not surface rust). Dont touch the front brake discs until the pads need doing. You will need to do the drop links for the MOT (use good ones as many new parts only last a few months).Dont bother to bleed the brakes with a fluid change, just suck the old fluid out and replace it, it wil mix eventuly. Its all about directing your money where it matters most. For me I would replace those junk Tyres with a set of higher end new tyres once I am sure the cars going to be good.

Enjoying the budget Audi content. Seems like good knowledge to have ... But nothing sounds imminent, and can be done a lot cheaper when needed. Sounds like a good car, one to keep a while as a user and tidy as you go. I'd be doing an oil and filters change, and keep using it.

the airbag connector under the seat breaks from moving the seat forward and backward, it is a yellow connector. Disconnect battery, remove connector and solder cables, clear the fault and check if that worked.

Great video, my Dad has a Golf Mk4 GTI with the same engine, literally everything is the same bar the badges(I notice that your steering wheel is the same too). Anyway…he had a massive oil leak and it was all over the underneath of the engine. I suggested he check the cam cover gasket as they tend to age and low and behold the rubber had turned to hard plastic and brittle(a piece was missing). It took him a couple of hours to do himself, and the gasket was 20quid. I'd give that a look. Don't overtighten the nuts holding the cover on when re assembling as they do shear. Good luck Jim

To be honest, it's probably better just to take it for an MOT and if it passes fix the advisories and give it a service. If it can safely pass an MOT, there can't be anything wrong with it. Also, look into the oil filler cap as the source of leak, might have been previously replaced but it looks like oil might be coming from there or the cam cover gasket but can't be anything serious if you say it is not losing any oil.

great video mate, love this channel so much, has the feel of a big channel but the mid level channel charm, you are very personable. i like that you arent so scared about learning to do repairs yourself. its very interesting to see how you develop and your choice of cars you buy are not boring at all. most channels are. i just hope it doesnt go down the bmw route like alot of car channels do. naturally they are great cars ( as an audi driver) they are very good cars but theres too many channels out there that do it. keep up the good work Joel. its brilliant.

But they didn't want £2698 to service the car, that cost is to fix all of the issues they have highlighted after your request to do so. They wanted £366 for a standard service.

Give it a go the DIY, in my experience you’ll always encounter problems and frustrations but once you over come them the satisfaction of completing work yourself is the reward. Plus saving paying out on the labour is a bonus 👍🏼

To be fair main dealers do a good health check, down side is they have high overheads. The service cost is good value for the information you get from the inspection. Near me indies are about the same as the main dealers, took my merc into an indie for a main service, the bill was £700. This was without any main replacement items.

Sometimes the cheapest thing we obtain in life turn out to be some of the most fun and and worthy of a bit of investment. Yes, us TT owners love to watch videos on maintenance which is an ongoing topic with these old cars. 👍🏻

Full restoration please on a budget. Audi is discontinuing production of the TT this year, so these will become appreciating classics. If you don’t want to then I’ll buy it off you and do the resto.

I'd like to see you fix some of the issues yourself. There's nothing particularly difficult in the list, especially if the cambelt is still good. It's the sort thing you could do for a few hundred quid on weekend.

I wish mk1 TT's were easier to find in the US. I had a 2017 before buying the Z4. At this point in the US, the mk1's are all too high miles, and just asking for trouble at 10X what you paid for yours. BUT very interested to see how you get on. Hoping it'll be fun and joyful for you. It definitely will be for us, especially if you do as much of the work as you feel you can do competently. Cheers!

I took my 2006 Volvo S40 into a main dealer (in anticipation of a Southern Spain roadtrip which didn't quite happen) and got a similar video walk round and detailed quotation. I think they wanted about £50 to replace a discoloured number plate. And £120 an hour labour costs are crazy. On the plus side, having a service got me a year's "free" full breakdown assistance (home, roadside, Europe) and recovery. So that's not bad. But still... £418 plus VAT for a service...

Rear light. You will have minor corrosion on the connector at the back of the light. Check handbook, remove & clean 👍👍

Airbag connectors are a common fault on other cars as well and should be an easy fix. Measure the front disc thickness and check against specs...easy DIY job usually if needed. I had my brake fluid changed recently for £42 at an independent garage on a Jag. Springs should also be fairly easy DIY. Should worry about oil leak if it fails the MOT, just check the level every week. Exhaust is ok unless it leaks.

The hazard light switch sometimes isn't the issue, mine was the indicator stalk. - This could relate to the airbag light if its linked to the wheel.

I’m loving this TT. Always liked the MK1. Please don’t sell it. I’d love to see it all mechanically sound. I’d like to buy a MK1 TT one day.

if doing suspension springs on the rear, chuck on a pair of shocks as well whilst its apart. If you've got a trolley jack and axle stands its defo a diy job. Well worth expanding your skill set (take your time!) and give us some great content to boot. Spend some of the money you save on a decent battery impact gun. Good luck - also look for a decent local audi independent garage - will probably halve the labour costs

My first thing before spending anything would be to put it in for an mot. No point in replacing suspension parts and then finding it fails on something else. See Furious Driving’s recent video as an example.

For an older car I would always search out an independent specialist for any advice and work you can’t do yourself.

Biggest saving on your car is buy some tools invest money 500 quid for good set of tools and jacks etc and rest you should be able to do such as full servicing, brakes, exaust, suspension, lights bulbs, wipers, so on rest the parts you can get good qulity ones for cheaper then oem ones also labour youll save alot alot, only wheels and tyres would cost or somthing eletrical that you dont know, rest its your own hard work and parts thags it.

Best thing I ever bought..... was a 4 post ramp! Its been in constant use since I bought it 3 years ago.... but then I have 4 cars, 3 vans and a Landrover. The Jag is on there at the moment for brakes, sills and corrosion treatment I do like the TT..... European road trip needed!

Got a 225 BAM, avoid the dealers and go to a VAG specialist. Its a nice little car that has a huge upside depending on how much budget youve got to put in and how much you want to do yourself. Big community and loads of mods you can do IF you wanted to go down that route. Should also say got the cambelt and water pump (the metal one, and not the plastic one the dealer would probably want to palm you off with) that was more than halve what Audi quoted you.

Definitely have a go yourself at some of the work, discs, drop links and suspension you shoud be able to do with a few tools, even the brake fluid change you could do with the right bleed equipment. There is so much satisfaction from completing a job yourself and it will make good content 😊

i used to work in the motortrade at a Lexus franchise a much cheaper option would be to get the brake discs skimmed on the car and just replace the brake pads it would only be about an hours labour cost

I would only spend on what is needed to get it though the MOT and of course a service, and then run it until it dies. Not worth spending money on something which you will never get a return on when you sell it.

At the beginning of the video the TT all cleaned up looked epic in red...This should be a keeper!!!

On the rear side lights, I think you turned the dial twice to main lights, which is why it looked like they were fine, check again but one click of the dial. Could be just a bulb, or connection. On the suspension I'd be tempted to buy the parts yourself and let a garage do it, knowing VAG cars of this age, bolts and stuff often sheer off or are badly rusted and they can be a swine. Nothing worse than getting halfway through a job and being marooned.. Spark plugs easy DIY, wipers, tyres and alloys etc. Keep apend low and might be a bit of profit in it when you sell. Take undertray off and investigate leak, hopefully not the sump but could get a second hand one if it is, just make sure it's torqued up to spec. Might be worth scavaging some parts off a scrapyard car.

Repair it your self you don't have to be mechanical minded to undo nuts and bolts take each repair one step at a time you can do it I believe in you brilliant video ❤👍

I've done a full service on mine. Worst parts are taking the plastic undertray off, and getting oil everywhere. Other than that, not hard at all.

joel do the stuff you are confident you can do, they farm out the rest to a specialist. main stealers always find stuff that isnt there or as bad as they say, i had the same at skoda when they said my brake discs and pads on front needed doing, i said so why wasnt it brought up 7 weeks and 300 miles ago when it was in for mot??? i would never go to a main dealer for servicing!

Those springs are fine just the coating peeling. A good underseal will sort that

If I’d known you were doing this I would have suggested exactly the same thing. The take away from this is deciding what you can do yourself and what needs a mechanic. Certainly the stealer won’t expect you to take the car to them and they will price heavier to discourage you from doing that. As I said in your valet vid I have the same 1.8 FWD in black although I have discovered that mine has been stage 1 modified by a previous owner. Aside from some scrapes to 3 corners mine needs a near side driveshaft which I’ve ordered and intend to fit. Mine also has original cup holders which are apparently rare as rocking horse do-do. My car is also in need of a service and I’m happy to do coil packs, plugs and oil. Mine has a cone filter which I will clean. As my car has literally 2 pieces of paper and no books ,V5 or any other history I will run it into a reliable mechanic for a look over and grab a belt change as mine is at 155K and so in the region of a second belt change. Luckily my nephew works for a wheel refurbishment company so I’ll get free new looking wheels and 3 of the tyres have been replaced (why not all 4 I don’t know). I’ve also ordered a carbon fibre rear wing extension and front splitter. I’ve also re-washed it and mopped it today, I’ve also progressed with the headlight restoration but I need some ultra fine sanding discs to get them perfect. So far: Key fob battery £4 Stereo unlocked £16 Washed car 3 times and mopped once £10 (chemicals) Refurbished headlights £0 free (ongoing) bought mop tool, pads and chemicals New Vonhaus random variable mop set £96 (having seen your drill attachment) for headlights and mopping bodywork. Left side front driveshaft £96 (ordered yet to receive and to be fitted) Worst scratches and grazes to be restored £ unknown 4 wheel refurbishment £0 free (to be done) Fit splitter and spoiler £320 parts cost only (ordered yet to receive and to be fitted)

From what I've seen on UT videos and from my own experience VAG parts can be eyewateringly expensive! and imagine labour rate are pretty high too. We have had 2 MK2 TT's and front brakes are very strightforward to do. We had an oil leak on ours that was due to the wrong sump plug being fitted!

If I was you I would be changing the Shocks as well, they do look a bit Crusty, you might as well seeing your doing the Spring,s, plus I would fit some stainless brake lines and some Ferodo DS 2500 pads with grooved discs, just to be sure, you can’t put a price on safety, Drive safe.

Check the brake fluid with a tester, if no water content in it then I'd probably leave it. Do the brake discs/pads yourself too.

Great cars when running, however electrical problems are usually the main issue. Drivers door loom through a post, door locks and rear washer all failed on my A3. Hope you have better luck than me.

The rear springs don't look corroded 🤔 when you investigate the airbag issue you will need a diagnostic tool to turn the light off....repairing the issue will not turn the light off with out it.

Springs on cars are dangerous becareful if you do them if you get it wrong it'll take your head off! My advice get the garage to do the springs

Cambelt and water pump is milage or every 5 year (which ever comes first). You should change it if the last change wasn't within the last 5 years

Brake fluid change@ATS=£45. We use ATS for tyres,brakes & MOT's.Main Dealer Prices are unaffordable.

£480 for front discs is ridiculous! I did front pads and discs on my Mk1 3.2 last week, took about 90 minutes on the driveway and parts were less than £90.

I would love to see how much of this a keen beginner like yourself could do...👍

A stage 1 map completely changes these cars, this is also a perfect car for you to Learn things on! It's a second car, didn't cost of you alot and parts are cheap so if you do work on it and for some reason it goes wrong it's not the end of the world!

Springs on this super easy just undo lower shock absorber bolt and it will lower rear axle alowing sping to pop out

Those discs don’t even need doing, they look fine to me! I took my insignia for tyres before and they said I needed my brakes doing all round, but then my regular garage never mentioned them a couple months later when I got the MOT done. There’s a lot of people around that’ll have your eyes out

I seem to remember mr brewer of wheeler dealers purchased an Audi TT a few seasons ago,he appeared to get off major financial output on the car, one cheap fix was fixing a gearbox issue for relatively nothing! In his programs I don't think he totally comes clean about expenditure.buying car's of this age and model Will cost,I hope you show an extensive video with all the repairs mentioned.

I think the way to go is a few DIY jobs and acces the parts yourself joel but get someone to do the rear springs for you a dangerous job if your not to mechanical minded good luck and keepnthe updates coming another good video joel 👍

Rear camber doesn’t look good. I had an independent modify mine by slight elongating holes to get more adjustment. Was either that or adjustable tie bars which were pricey. I never had an issue with it and he’d done loads this way.

Those Audi main stealer prices are eye watering. Genuine Audi parts and Audi labor prices on a car or that age is a waste of money. Glad your not going down that route. Most cars of that era maintenance & repair jobs are DIY with the help of KZfaq videos and some forum Googling. Your young, do a basic electronics course, practice with a soldering iron and how to use a multi meter, you will then be then be able to tackle car wiring and electronic troubleshooting. Fixing that air bag connection under the seat and the indicator button would then be a breeze. It will save you many garage trips and a lot of wedge. Get your hands dirty 💪

A video doing a full service, the suspension bits and either tarting it up to resell, or perhaps turn it into a track car would be a great mini series.
