YES! I work at a doggy daycare and there was a German Shepard that would come by frequently, the parents never really trained him his whole life. They recently had a baby, dropped the dog off at a shelter, the couple was then told to take him back to buy more time to find him a new home. Unfortunately, they did not find him a home and he was put down :(

Think of it similar to the dog being the older sibling. They start to act up to get attention. For this dog that turned into an obsession with the baby. Look how easily he quit that when they went back to giving him some more attention like he likely got before the baby came. The main thing here was just getting his brain working and thinking rather than just sitting in anxiety mode all day long.

That's trueeee. More enrichment exercise will be needed for him

Make sure you have someone bring something home that smells like the baby before you come home from the hospital, so your pup has a chance to get used to the new smells!

Dogs are not people. They can’t sit down with a psychologist and talk their problems out. Symptom management is generally all we can do. The goal is behavior modification. It’s very possible that once the baby gets bigger and gains some agency, they won't need these techniques anymore.

They're not management so much as counter conditioning. They were already doing some management (baby gate) but now they have incompatible behavior (go settle, use snuffle mat) paired with positive conditioning around the baby. We don't need to speculate about his inner motivations if we can change his emotional and arousal state - and Victoria has done both.

@@Jamie-lw1lo I respect your point of view and agree to an extent, but I still believe that trying to understand the inner motivations of any sentient being is our duty as the so-called "superior species" - that's why we have empathy. Changing the behaviour through conditioning is fine, but it's a shallower level of operating, and one I've personally outgrown in my practice.

@@Calistake047I’m not a dog professional or even experienced with dogs but isn’t the dogs inner motivation very obvious to see hence Victoria’s counter conditioning worked a treat? It looks like the dog was the baby of the house getting the parents full attention then along came baby and took all the attention away and became the focus instead. He was probably neglected as it was covid and they would have been solo parenting making it likely he was not walked or enriched and meant to cope with all these negative changes. By training a) the parents started giving him attention even though the baby was around b) he got a space to chill (not punishment but something positive - his space) These finally brought his stress hormones down and calmed him down to the point he can start relaxing and switching his thinking brain on again. Baby is no longer associated with negative and anxiety provoking emotions so he can now co-exist and even start making friendships with the child. The underlying emotional trigger was addressed perfectly. Dog looks like he now feels safe on walks and at home and has gone back to his normal self. He also started getting attention again which means the neglect he initially felt went away. Hopefully they manage to be more mindful with any further babies or the behaviour could come back.

Well they are. Or at least can be very easily without proper training, and barely anyone trains them properly.

There’s two ways: One the u-turn. Just turn and walk away before the full reaction. Usually there’s a sign like tenseness or a wrinkled forehead or ear position, scruff. Never let the full reaction happen. You can also build up to just using “watch me”. This teaches dogs the power of choice: they don’t have to look, they don’t have to go to the stressor. They can make a better choice. Two: every time you see the Jack Russel give all the rewards. Whatever your dog likes: food, toy, squeaker. Again don’t let the reaction happen. Be upbeat. Be distracting. Literally get in their face but in a silly exciting way “oh who’s that, is that your friend” very upbeat. Associate the stressor with good things. And it makes the stressor a good thing You can do either or both.

You need to turn into the dog and have him focused on you. If he's just walking backwards he's still being rewarded by seeing what he wanted to. Use treats if needed or whatever motivates your dog the most to pay attention to you.

My fur baby is a trained mal/ sheperd mix. There more babies the more energy and time you put into them so nor much overlap

I call my dogs furbabies all the time 🤗 they're both very well mannered and trained! I think it's just a general term people use, but I could see how if you see a lot of people who have bad dogs use it, it can be seen in a negative light

Since they are so smart, it could be resource guarding behavior. Newborns take a lot of time and attention, and I am 100% certain that the dog noticed the change. Whenever the mom touches the baby and picks her up it also triggers Ziggy which is a huge sign of resource guarding. The baby is the one receiving attention, which is a resource, and that's why he's reacting so negatively.

​@@user-zq4ng2rw2dsome people have no idea about their dogs behaviours. They think if a dog isn't biting the child it is fine. If a dog is sharply barking they are aggressive. I think if people just pretended their little dogs were German Shepard, there would be a lot more understanding.

This dog should not be in a home with young children. It cannot be trusted regardless of how much training.

How can you be so blind? The dog is actively lunging and jumping up at the baby when the mum is carrying her. The intense stare and constant watching of the baby is predatory behavior and a sign of aggression. Just because he hasn't physically attacked her yet doesn't mean the intent isn't there. These are all warning signs, and eventually, that dog would have bitten her. It was only a matter of time.

However, re homing is only best if it’s what is best for everyone involved. It’s always best to find a professional to help you help your furry friend, and preferably before you give birth. It allows you to get stuff in place to keep the baby safe, and help the furry friends feel safe.

@@smartbics2gaming that’s not what I am saying at all! If you read what I wrote, I even said a child’s safety is important. Sometime animals bond with us, and it would be more damaging to the furry ones to just get rid of them instead of working with them to train them. Granted if you can’t train them to be a safe member of your family with children, then of course you should re home, as that would be what’s best for everyone! However, you should always do everything in your power to train any pet to be good neighbors in the home, even if it means getting professional help. I also think you should start training them to be good neighbors towards babies and children the minute you start thinking about having children, and reinforce your bond with your furry ones before any baby or child comes into the picture so they’re less likely to get stressed or jealous and misbehave.

I agree. As much as I love my dog, if its shows severe aggression toward my child, I'd have to rehome them with someone who is a better fit.

to be fair, not a single dog, even the most well behaved should never be left unsupervised with a baby. And the family actually mentioned they didn’t have a possibility to get help due to lock down. Ziggy is not aggressive, he’s anxious. A lot of work can fix it 🙂 Guidance and correct techniques are the key.

Never get an animal then. Though I'm sure you're a child that doesn't understand the world. Only children say things like "it's the shelter or the taxidermist." You also don't know anxiety from aggression which means you really should never have a dog.

@@margaritapolakova9560In general, a baby shouldn't be left unsupervised anyway. As you said, this isn't even aggression it's just anxiety. If it was aggression they'd have been bit by now. The only time he came close to aggression was when he got picked up while barking which is understandable. All the emotion and adrenaline happening at that moment and you just scoop him up.. yeah anything's likely to happen for even the calmest and friendliest of dogs.

That’s awful. He was their baby, and then they replaced him with something that cried and took all their time. Of course he needed some training to deal with that. They should have dealt with it sooner of course.

​@@stillwatersfarm8499 It is not a baby. Their baby is their baby. That dog is an animal acting defensive against the baby for just existing. The dog has no rights of seniority. Certainly would never give it a right to behave this way to a baby regardless.

The dog is not the villain. The dog is just a dog, and the owners created the problem and need to correct it.

The dog was their baby, and then they replaced it. It’s not hard to understand why he’s upset. They just need to teach their dog that he’s a dog. Don’t pick him up. Possibly even don’t let him up on furniture for a time. Crate training so he has personal space. If our toy gets upset at a stranger, we say “go to your bed”. She goes straight there. At night when we are tired of throwing the ball, we say “go to your chair”. She has a chair that she sits on, and she’ll go chill there. We don’t feed her from our plates. She’s a dog - a beloved dog, not a baby.

That is exactly what you shouldn't do. Victoria and good dog trainers dont do that because it doesn't work, and it can backfire by making the dog aggressive. Image you pick up a highly anxious dog and trap it into "submission" the dogs adrenaline is pumping and it will want to escape, many dogs would lash out in that situation and bite and I wouldn't blame them because its a natural physiological reaction in that situation (fight or flight). Even if the dog doesn't bite they aren't taught anything. Instead of this old, outdated and disproven method Victoria works with tge dog to find the underlying cause and tries to remedy that, it takes time and effort (because all training does) but it has the best chance of success.

Please don't get a dog in first place if you have superiority complex don't have a dog if you are about to bring baby home let that one dog find a better loving home and owner who can train him and build trust because after bringing an animal you won't be able to train trust control love once you have a child you will feel insecure always and say things like that instead let that dog have a chance with good owners please for love of God.
