I have had the Bentleeville rail yard on my layout for years. But, I have never actually finished it. As a part of my NEW layout, I just hunkered down and got it done. I painted and ballasted the track, installed the lighted structures, some cool LED details, and some general details! From a Regular Guy perspective, this is just totally the bomb! I cannot wait for you to follow me through the process!

@@ItsMyRailroad My grands and great grands and I connect with trains as well. There's just something about model trains that us kids of all ages love. Quick little story that you may already know. A dept store saw Lionels first little electric train that he made and asked it they could use it in a store display to bring attention to some of their merch. They set it up and in a few days he got a call. "didn't help the merch but we sold the train, can you make us some more?" The rest, as the say, is history. I'm sure I took a bit of license in telling the story, but that was basically how electric trains got started.

So funny when I was Bennet's age my uncle Jim always set up an H.O. train table in his basement for Christmas. He is an artist, so his layout although temporary was so detailed. The funny part is when I would ask "can we play with the trains" his reply often was " they are sleeping" and that worked for me. We can't wake up the trains now can we.

You say it’s not rocket science using foam to form the grades for the rail crossings. Well, the only degree I got was to become a RN & I never thought about all the uses for foam, like grade crossings so you must be smarter than at least one nurse. Love your channel and your attitude! Cool 😎 yard Steve. The beauty is indeed in the detail. However, not too much emphasis on the rivets. Because, when your beholders can’t really see it, wouldn’t it go beyond what is intended for. Anyhow, adding to that point, pun intended; the little story you conveyed about your grandson enjoying the ‘it’s my railroad’ together with his pops is truly what model railroading is about, as far as I’m humbly concerned. Of course it’s about building our very own worlds. And to share that with our children and grandchildren will just teach them, in this virtual age, there’s worlds beyond which are tactile and can actually be touched and be played with. Like it’s the real thing. That’s something what your grandson will remember and hopefully will pass on to his kids and grandkids. That very tactile aspect is what enhances our imagination and creativity. Love it. Thanks 🙏 for sharing.

I love the practical tips you lay out! Watching you use the compound to make the crossing point reminded me very much of watching a crew do the very same thing with asphalt one day. They raked it into the crossing, rolled it out ... and then had a GP-40 that was standing by roll through the hot asphalt, squeezing the mix off the rails and leaving behind a nice channel for the wheels. :-) Keep it up! I love this project, and the reaction of your grandson is EXACTLY what I am hoping for in days to come with my own.

Nice yard scene Steve. Have a suggestion. If you have a place for a saw mill coming up, move the steam yarder and the other bits of old logging equipment there. It would look like it belongs there , better than as part of a yard scene.
