Reason's why I love Starfire is because she always seems to be the most sweetest person, threw different interpretations.

I personally think the reason starfire turned more "cold and sexual", like they say in the video, is because, knowing that, pretty much EVERY person she ever loved,where eventually killed, or left her. All the people she cared about,were eventually gone. Now she's just, looking for the love and attention she had lost. She thinks that,maybe, the love she had lost,she might get it back, by having sex with other people. The reason why they say she is "cold", is not that she's like that. She has just been left, SO MANY TIMES, that she just doesn't wants it to happen again,but she knows she has to keep fighting. So she eventually starts to remain strong. She's not cold,she's just a person with a bad past, that decided to keep going.

Maybe she's colder because of all she's lost? Even Dick Grayson isn't sticking by her from what you said. So she intentionally uses her body to attract men because she knows she can. Same with the sex being a coping mechanism, wanting to find some kind of pleasure or happiness in life. Even if it's just physical and temporary.

I am so sick of all the hating for the new Starfire. She is the smartest, strongest, most caring and all around most capable of the team. Yes the way she's drawn is way oversexualized. But shouldn't a character be based on... well character, instead of looks?

one needs to get into the comic and character which takes time. the first impression of starfire is very different from what most people are used to and not in a good way. she may be great and interesting but thatd take some time to get into. i myself was not pleased with it and stopped reading. However, i am most attached to the teen titans show version of her and the 180 it pulls in that respect is mostly the reason. I know ill get back to it later however

She sucks now because she's not starfire anymore she's completely different and that's why people dislike her. You can give better traits to a character but that takes away from the character itself and ruined it. Tim Drake for example. In his new 52 version. They don't show his struggle to be Robin physically. That takes away from what makes Tim, Tim. Tim became a great Robin by overcoming his physical shortcoming in comparison to the two previous robins by being superior smart wise.

Oh my goodness. I need to stop commenting. But I literally teared up when you started talking about how Starfire has no one and needs Dick. And I feel bad, because Dick is ALWAYS shipped with Barbara I feel. (Besides for mostly TT (The show) Fans. And I love Barbara, and I get that they have a LOT of history, but Starfire is always being called a slut, but as you said, that is just the way Tamaraneans, tend to be. (Lustful, Sensual), but she really did love Dick, and was really passionate about him. People can say what they want, but I will always love Kori.

By the way, I try to avoid New 52 (ESPECIALLY AFTER THEY DECIDE TO KILL OFF DICK, I know they always kill of characters in comics (and 99% of the time they come back) But I said, NO MORE KILLING OFF THE ROBINS. I said no. New 52 already wasn't ding great with me, but to do that? No. Anyway . . . Got off topic, what I was going to say is, I said that ^ about 'Real' Starfire . . . Original? The show? Yeah.

The new Starfire comic that has come out has made her a lot like her counterpart in the Teen Titans show. She is very naive and goofy and fun like she is in the show. There is a bit in the comic where she is in a jewellery store selling something and the person says that it is worth "3 big ones" and it shows her thinking and what she is imagining is 3 elephants. The Starfire in this new comic is light years better than the new 52 version.

Hi! Please check the comments first as I've already replied to this type of comment a million and one times. So, Mar'i was from an alternative universe and was the daughter of Dick Grayson and Starfire in that universe. She was NOT the daughter of Starfire in the main universe and as such is not the daughter of the Starfire I talk about in this video so mentioning her would've been pointless.
@HTakara82

ItsSuperEffective Yeah, I went through several comments and didn't see any xD. Anywho, alternate realities are common place in american comics. So I think it's still worth mentioning.
@ItsSuperEffective
@ItsSuperEffective 10 жыл бұрын
Not really. Yes alternative realities are common in american comics. I've been reading them for long enough to understand how they work. Now, this is where a lot of confusion happens and WHY Mar'i was not worth mentioning. She was the daughter of dick grayson and starfire of her universe, but NOT the daughter of dick grayson and starfire in the main universe and as such her parents are totally different people from the characters I talk about in this video. Think of it like this. If I did a video on a person named Steve and down the road from him somebody who was also named Steve ate a pie. I wouldnt mention that Pie in the original Steves video because it has nothing to do with him, it was just a person who shared the same name who ate the pie, not the main Steve. Think of characters in "alternative universes" in the same way, they are characters with the same name, but they are different people and that really needs to be established.
@HTakara82
@HTakara82 10 жыл бұрын
ItsSuperEffective True enough, I always viewed all alternate universes to be canon, more so in Marvel comics though. Like each spiderman (spectacular/amazing/etc) are all different peter parker's, but events in all of them are canonical still.
@ItsSuperEffective
@ItsSuperEffective 10 жыл бұрын
Well, in DC alternate universes are still Canon, but the people in them are different people. The best example is Supergirl and Powergirl, they're each universes equivalent of each other, but they are different people with very different personalities.

Well Starfire sure does sound like she was written as someones sexual desire on paper. I agree with you that the Starfire in the Teen Titans series was great and should have left enough content for others to follow. Since writers like to change things and make one simply story into a Jerry Springer slugfest and make their lives a living hell not just to the character but to the readers, respectfully! Writers don't always have a finished story in mind until enough content has been developed to establish a great story arc, or a weird one!

I so miss the cartoon teen titans. It was something that was geared more towards teenagers and adults then kids because some of the subject matter. I mean they really did kill characters off which blew my mind. Though I like the adult titans I really wish someone would do a direct to DVD movie on them, like they did Batman:Under the Red Hood. That video was super cool. Thanks for the video and the comic history lesson. I've been out of the loop since the early 90s due to closing of our local comic stores and bookstores cutting back on comics.

From my knowledge, which may be wrong, for the new 52 Starfire. From what I have heard, Starfire lost her memories, in a way, forcing herself to forget about them, since they were so tragic. Including those about Dick. She has made herself forget everything and whenever asked about, she would know or feel great pain. With that said making her almost emotionless and cold, as you said. And to help her feel emotions and feel normal again, she resorts to having meanless sex with others, to help get some kinda of feeling, to feel alive. Now I know its sounds a lottle weird but I think that is how it is. Also right now she is still currently on Earth and is still dating Roy Harper, which was said in the latest issue of the comic. Other then that, the video was fantastic and I learned a lot about my favorite character, so I thank you!

I love this video! Starfire is one of my favorite characters and you provide so much depth and information about her that most fans of Teen Titans that I know of, just gloss over or they just focus on her cheerful persona more often seen in the first cartoon series...honestly, why does "Go!" even exist...and therefore portray her as too sunshiny or a ditz and any possibility at a serious tone just makes me go, "X'hal! Do your research!" Also, thank you for mentioning she was the fourth character to go by that name, I've only known of one other and I believe that's Leonid...Kevlar? Before becoming Red Star. As for the new 52 Starfire, I haven't read the comics directly, but I have read what's been done to the new character and I'm with you, I hate it. I was so dismayed by how Koriand'r's been changed. Kory is not meant to be a cold character! Not all of the time anyway. Did they mix her up with her sister? And what's with the outfit? If the cartoon Starfire can freak out over her outfit from the majority of the comic issues, I'd bet she'd faint upon sighting the new 52 one.

This video was actually a really good one. Great job explaining Starfire's origins! I agree that DC should make Starfire more like the way she is in the Teen Titans cartoon (which I love!). She's so girly and cute that way. I also think Red Hood and the Outlaws would be a better story if they didn't screw up Starfire's personality (the operative word being "screw").

Hi ItsSuperEffective, I'm new to your channel (just subbed) and I want to say that I really enjoy your analysis on comics here, especially this new Starfire. I totally agree with you that while sensuality and sexuality have always been a part of her character, it almost seems like the writers are now playing it as a main focus for her. It's a little disgusting and degrading imho. Granted I know that females in comics have never really been portrayed very, well for lack of a better word "realistically" (perfect bodies and skin tight revealing costumes abound), but I'm finding nowadays the female characters are being shown as little more than sex toys and eye candy. I can really see this in the way that they kinda sexed up Harley Quinn and Catwoman, like that whole controversy with her looking sexy while about to commit suicide and Catwoman and Batman going at it like two horny teenagers in some recent issue. As a good ol' red blooded male comic book enthusiast, I like me some sexy chicks as much as the next guy, but I think that you gotta put story first. Otherwise we might as well just be buying issues of Heavy Metal, not that I don't read Heavy Metal or think that Heavy Metal is bad. I just personally think that there are so many things you can do with female characters in comics besides just sexing em up. What do you think of the new direction that their taking with a lot of female characters in comics nowadays? Do you feel like it alienates female readers too? Because I happen to know a few women who like comic books like I do and they are downright appalled by some of the goings on in comics on the part of female characters. Sorry for such a long post but keep up the great work! See you on the next vid!

I completely agree! As a female reader;) haha I don't mind them being sexy but going over bored and just focusing on that is crazy and boring. I hate how they are making Harley Quinn sexy as I always loved her as the crazy personality and felt that her charm wasn't using her sex appeal. Where as catwoman's and ivy are known for being sexy and using that against male characters to get their way. I hate how every female character seems to be going down the same road.I want to be supportive but it just makes me so frustrated.

you know when you think about it there is someone in the marvel universe who understands starfire: skaar. think about it they come from ravaged planets, their both royalty, they both have evil siblings who are mad with power and they are both spirited warriors. some of their diffrences is that starfire focuses on the positives, skaar focusses on the negitives, starfire is ignorent and skaar is intelligent, starfire can fire blasts of energy and skaar has the old power. i can see these two being great friends if they met. if starfire and skaar met skaar would be able to relate to her to a degree but the diffrence is is that skaar had it much worse on sakaar since he had to fight and kill just to survive day to day, he was responsible for his planets destruction and his mothers spirit cast him out. but im willing to bet if these two became friends and starfire took skaar to tamaran he would feel right at home.

I recently read Red Hood and the Outlaws and I actually liked this portrayal of Starfire. When you read it you find out that she's still scarred by the way her and Dick Graisons relationship ended and she just wanted to keep Roy at arms length. I don't really care if she wants to have sex with every guy character, but that's not the case. She develops actual feelings for Roy and it's not like her character is this extremely sexual 2D character. After reading Starfire 2015 they tried to make her look less seductive, but she remains secure with her sexuality but makes these ditzy like decisions which isn't like the previous portrayal of Starfire

I agree, I beileve the Starfire in Redhood wasn't chosen because of her storyline. The writers just wanted a sexual superhero to fight in Outlaws and they just choose from a random pool of female superheros and picked Starfire. There is no problem with her being more sexual but they took out too many of her personal traits in Redhood.

6:40 filthy nastaaaayyyyy!!! Great video by the way. I always wowonder why the teen titans don't have a movie. Then again, i think with too many characters to be explained in a single movie actually is way harder to control. That's why the avengers only happens after they have you watch hours and hours of the individual characters so it works. It's still too chaotic, but but at least it has footing. Sonic heroes had 4 teams of 3 so that's 12 main characters but only 1 enemy. Eggman. In shadow the hedgehog and the sonic adventure series, you fight the usa government and eggman. But again, sonic adventure 1 sucked for the same reason, some people love sonic adventure games, but i know it's easyier to love than hate when there's multiple games based on similar agendas.

Agreed, both the Titans group that inspired the Teen Titans show and the Teen Titans show are better...hell, Teen Titans Go! new series has a better Starfire lol Before, when Starfire was sexual it was entirely seeking true love, which is what all women should be doing regardless and eventually men(when we get past the novelty of sex lol). BUT, instead she is a hoe fo' sho :(

Great work on this piece. Starfire is a very underrated character in DC. How do you feel about the heavy anime Teen Titans cartoon? I would prefer if they just did these characters seriously and used the 1980s origin stories to make an amazing cartoon. It's too bad that cyborg is supposed to be part of the Justice League now--it really messes with this team.

You know, if they had just translated the comics I would've probably just ignored the cartoon and just read the comics, but since they did their own thing with it, I had a reason to watch it. The anime style helped the feel the story the cartoon was going for, and by not going too in depth with their origins they made the characters more human.

After reading the first issue of Red Hood and the Outlaws, I was extremely put off as well. But a friend convinced me to keep reading the series because he swore to me that they fixed her. There was the issue where they explain how Jason and Kory met that showed a whole different side to her character. There was an entire arc where the team goes with Kory to save Tameran and she effectively captains a starship and her memory issues were later revealed to be a mental defense mechansim to block out painful memories(apparently something really bad happened between her and Nightwing). While this Starfire is a lot more distant than her television counterpart I think it fits. She would have issues connecting with others(as you pointed out she really doesn't have anyone) and being a slave for several years would also cause mental problems. Whatever happened between her and Dick really messed with her. I mean she completely isolated herself for a year that should give a clue as to her mental state. I guess all I'm getting at is as the comic has gone they've developed her character more and I'm really enjoying where this new Starfire is going. I would recommend giving the comic a second chance and see if any of the changes they made make her character any more appealing.

you know when you think about it there is someone in the marvel universe who understands starfire: skaar. think about it they come from ravaged planets, their both royalty, they both have evil siblings who are mad with power and they are both spirited warriors. some of their diffrences is that starfire focuses on the positives, skaar focusses on the negitives, starfire is ignorent and skaar is intelligent, starfire can fire blasts of energy and skaar has the old power.

Honestly, my view of why she changed is she saw how unfair the world was time and time again. She thinks no one will love her, so she gives up her body in order to try and feel at least a sliver of what she used to feel. She’s cold, but can you blame her? She’s been tortured to great lengths by many different people, rejected by the one she thought would love her, who she loved. Imagine your planet was destroyed, and then you realize it might be back. Possibly with the people that you loved, only to have your hopes destroyed. Everyone you loved turned against you, so you realize love is worthless at this point, and use sex to try to grasp at the one little thing you think is impossible for you, but that you crave more than anything. Nah, I understand it
