Next to Lionel, I think LGB is my favorite model train manufacturer. (P.s. Stainz is pronounced "Sch-tohns". It's loosely modeled after a real narrow gauge engine from Austria that's in preservation)

I got a starter set from my grandfather back in 85. The Stainz still runs, I only took it out during Christmas. Over the years it got dirty and dusty, and many parts fell off or broke. I did restore it cosmetically recently, well worth it.

Here's a tip for the next time you want to clean lgb locomotives and wagons: put them under the shower and rinse them off with a little distance! Water from above doesn't bother this material, the LGB is made to be used outdoors come sun, rain or snow! Dry off after the shower and everything is fine. only obvious parts, such as the box on the unimog, should of course not get wet.

Wow TrainBoy, your great grandfather has a very interesting backstory on focusing the things he enjoyed, even with the ups and downs he still has a great backstory, even after he got the LGB set from his trip in germany, even after his passing, and now having your great grandfathers LGB train set, your grandfather will still be very proud of you on taking care of his LGB train set. 🙂

LGB were pioneers of G scale trains, and built them to a very high standard. One of the more unique aspects of LGB locomotives, and cars, is they were built such that if they were doused with water, you could pick them up, let them dry off, and it wouldn't phase them.
@ItsTrainBoy

They’re VERY worth checking out or the investment my friend! :) This may sound silly but any time I’m in a sad or rough spot, they save the day pretty quickly. They can be built outside in almost any weather, take over a living room, and (AS LONG AS YOUR CONTROLLER DOESN’T DIE) you’re in business!! It is pretty expensive though so maybe check out Bachmann Lil’ Big Haulers or Piko first should LGB push it?

My Great Uncle Jack used to collect Lionel models throughout his life and had his basement in his house - a house he built himself, by the way - with a model railway set-up. He was also a military veteran, though he didn’t fight the Second World War. Instead, he used to fly radio-controlled drones used for Anti-Air training out in Arizona before returning home back east. One of my cousins has the full collection now as he - unfortunately - passed away back in 2018 at the age of 89. However, I ended up with a few other things, including a propeller for one of those drones he… “procured.”

I've got some LGB motive power (ALCO in Rio Grande paint scheme), some mixed rolling stock, and some track from Aristo-Craft; they were all from a friend of my grandmother's on my dad's side of the family (they passed away a few years ago). Need to get a new transformer as the one I received with it doesn't work. Just need a better house that allows for a proper workbench setup to do maintenance on it and outside space for a G Scale layout to be setup.

That Brake Van actually wasn't LGB. Rather, it was "Playmobil". Playmobil was a cheaper, more child centered set of trains that LGB introduced in the late 1970's, early 1980's. The idea behind these was to allow children to play with trains which wouldn't break the first moment a child touched them. The playmobil trains weren't as detailed as the LGB ones, and were also primarily made out of plastic. In any case, that brake van was an add-on to a set that Playmobil offered which had a number of small 4 wheel side dump tipper cars, and a small diesel locomotive. As offered, the set came with two tipper cars, a locomotive, and a number of posable figures. Addons included the side dump cars, and that little brake van you have.
@ItsTrainBoy
@ItsTrainBoy Жыл бұрын
That is interesting, the Brake Vans are sold by LGB though? They probably started as Playmobil and LGB took the molding or vice versa; it’s LGB branded though 😅 Playmobil is something I’m pretty fond of too personally but I’m not sure it can hold a torch to the nostalgia I have for LGB? I’ll have some Playmobil content coming soon too so that’ll be a fun add on
@exveefan
@exveefan Жыл бұрын
@@ItsTrainBoy I'm pretty sure that brake van is 100% LGB design, back when the company once offered 3V Battery Powered stock in the 1970s. If you look at LGB catalogs from 1975 onwards, they used the same wagon frame for a wine barrel car and a cable car. LGB and Playmobil did collaborated back in the 80s?, LGB use to provide the brass tracks for Playmobil sets, (and maybe motor blocks to, but that's up for debate.) And at the same time, Playmobil provided the people included for the LGB Battery Powered sets around the same time.
@SocieteRoyale
@SocieteRoyale Жыл бұрын
I have the van and bought it from the LGB catalogue some time in the 90s. They did collab with Playmobile as we used to order the track from them as it was cheaper than through LGB weirdly
@SkarloeyBoi

No that brake van is entirely LGB, it has nothing to do with Playmobil and was not designed or made by them. It was part of a series of small 4 wheel fieldbahn cars they made
