Hey, I know that guy on TV! Who would have thought your hobby would have taken you to this point. The laser cut backing on the mirror you made was a nice touch too. So creative. Can't wait to see what you come up with next and where your passion takes you. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Chip! It was a lovely way to close out the year and it's given me more inspiration to keep going at the same rate in 2023 :D

I started doing basic hand engraved logos on the front of mirrors a few year back, only owned a Dremel & some hand drawing skills. Slowly but surely I've invested in products to help me speed things up & help improve quality. Sandblaster, compressors, air brushes, etc. And since I found this channel it has really inspired me to try & push things further. And although I haven't attempted it yet, I have bought in the glue & gold leafing to give glue chipping a try, as a result of this channel. And now finding out it's a dying craft, that's pushed me to stick to it even more. I actually thought things like this were on the increase. Well done for getting some recognition in what you do m8, and thanks for any info you've gave out. You're helping keep it alive in more ways than one.

Thanks mate I really appreciate it, and it's great to hear you're getting the kit together to start making reverse glass signs. I started out the same way as you, using a dremmel on the front of the mirror. The problem with that is you get a double reflection so it looks blurry on the fine details. When I figured the sand blast method I was over the moon and haven't looked back since :D

Congratulations Paul. Very well deserved, and thank you for all the wonderful videos you have given us. One step better than videos would be actual workshops, or one day 'taster' sessions. Please let me/us know if you ever plan a workshop as I want to be at the front of the queue!! Thanks again.

Thanks Ian! I doubt I'll ever be offering 'in person' workshops because I'd need Public Liability Insurance and my facilities wouldn't pass a safety inspection 💀

Reality hurts ... in the 70's I'd pin stripe a car, van, truck in Detroit almost daily besides my airbrush mural work. In Australia one artist in he 30's was doing "Reverse Images" on pub signs ... he also won The Archibald Prize, Australia's highest art prize started in 1921. After the 2nd world war their was a shortage of plate glass and building materials here in Australia, so many pieces were acid stripped for the 5-10 mm glass. If you own one of those from that time, they are now worth upwards of $30,000 AUS.. Paul's updated art work is fantastic... and FREE. ... Good on Ya' Paul!

Hi Paul, my name is Tony, I live in Ottawa, Canada. I run a small sign and apparel shop and I am always looking for something new and happened onto your videos. VERY INTERESTING and I am FASINATED, I need to try your processes. I have watched most of your KZfaq videos at least once, some more than once. I am wondering if you could answer a few questions and maybe point me in the right direction. To start, do you have list or video of the items, materials, tools, chemicals you use? Is there anything specific about the glass you use and how thick is the glass you typically used? I see in your videos that you use a variety of processes, I will start with "etching cream ** (acid)" mixed with water and something else ... what is that something else? I see you also use media blasting, what media are you using, is it aluminum oxide? I see also that you are using a laser for some of your work. Is the process variation acid/blast/laser intended only to get different texture results? ** I understand the danger of using acid so no law suites here! When you apply gold leaf, are you wetting the glass with just distilled water or is there something mixed in to make the old leaf adhere? One last question ... can you suggest any books or other videos on the subject. Oh ya, sorry one more ... if I can figure out a way ... can I buy you a beer for your time taken to respond! cheers and thank you so much for your help and inspiring videos1

Hi Tony, it's nice to hear from you. I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos! In answer to your questions: - I only use plate glass (also called float glass) and the thickness depends on the size of the piece. 4mm for anything up to 20 inches in the largest dimension, the 6mm for anything over that. - I mix Mica flakes with the water and acid mix. This is what creates the stippled pattern - Blasting media is 120 grit aluminium oxide - I rarely use the laser for glass work because the results are inferior to using a sand blaster. The laser fractures the glass rather than just etching the surface so it doesn't take paint as weel and the etch isn't as clean as a sandblasted finish - I use distilled water with leaf gelatine to apply the gold. You should check out my most recent video for a detailed breakdown of the process and materials - 3 must have books are: Mastering Layout by Mike Stevens, Gold Leaf Techniques by Kent H Smith & Signwriting tips, tricks and inspiration by Joby Carter Thanks very much for offering to buy me a beer! You can do so with this link: www.buymeacoffee.com/happygilder Let me know if you need any help along the way, and I strongly recommend joining the facebook group. It's full of new and experienced artists all helping each other out.
