Part 2 • The Getty's - A Traged...
Once upon a time there was a man so rich, that in order to count out his money by noted dollar bills it would have taken a whole lifetime. Behind the walls of his English county house he lived as best he could with the terrible label the press had given him “J. Paul Getty, The Richest Man In The World”.
This film is a powerful account of how the Getty dynasty became tormented by its own wealth and filled with tragedy after tragedy. J. Paul Getty was started out as a driven man, wanting only to prove his dying father wrong in assuming that he could not run the family oil business, with this obsession he went on to become the richest man in the world.
This fact however did not provide Getty with happiness, one of his sons killed themselves, one died during childhood and the other was disinherited. In this two part series we hear from his family as they provide some insight into the legacy that J. Paul Getty left behind.

So, let me get this straight... before the old man’s death, he wanted to leave something behind for all of mankind to benefit and the only idea he could come up with was to build himself yet another huge home and fill it with artwork? What a guy.

I was thinking exactly the same. Instead of helping the poor, he enriched himself with expensive art collections. Yes, his rich circle of friends would go to his palace to praise him on his exquisite taste. How does that help the poor and ordinary working people ? What a hyprocrite !

About 45 years ago, Paul Getty the 3rd, his girlfriend and his mother came into the furniture store I worked at. We had them fill out a credit app. When I saw the name Getty (being aware of the kidnapping), I couldn't help but check to see if the young redheaded boy was missing his ear. It was gone. Imagine, a Getty needing to apply for credit.

Thank you for this documentary as I was always a bit curious. In the 50’s early 60’s as a young girl, my family lived in Malibu and everytime we drove on PCH past where his huge marble structure overlooked the ocean, I wondered about it … and many years later seeing online so many photographs owned by Getty. A very sad story.

I found it to be extremely sad and disturbing , that John Paul the 3d never received any psychological therapy after the kidnapping. That boy had to be traumatized, yet his family didn't want the embarrassments of him seeing a "shrink". They had enough money to have it done in secret. I feel that he fell into drugs as a direct result, of not having received therapy.

For anyone curious as to why Paul would blame himself for Talitha's death, I did a little research and found that she became fed up with the drug scene Paul was indulging in and prepared to divorce him. He understood her reason (chiefly that she wanted to focus on regaining her health, sense of identity, and take care of their son) and bought her a separate home where she stayed with their son. Her divorce lawyer convinced her to go back to Paul in a faux reconciliation attempt to persuade the judge that she had tried one last time to make the marriage work and while she was with Paul, she overdosed on heroin. That's where his guilt comes from and he was in a deep depression for several years afterward (I'm curious as to who took care of their son; perhaps Talitha's family, as Paul was really in no shape physically or psychologically to do so).

@@gaylemc2692 You're welcome. It's a really sad story. Talitha was a beautiful woman and they made a handsome couple, but once heroin entered the scene everything went awry. It's just as terrible that Paul's own son, Paul III, went through his own hell with heroin, basically living out the rest of his later years as a vegetable. I'm glad he and his father reconciled, though, before either of them passed away and I'm also glad that Paul III's children seem to be doing much better than most of the older family members and even some of their similar-aged cousins. Andrew Getty, who appears in this, was found dead in his home under strange circumstances some years back and I know his death had to be painful for his family to deal with.

I think if you took a hard, cold look at him and realized what his priorities were then he wasn't that bad. Not saying he made good choices in life, as he had disastrous marriages and almost no emotional connection with his own sons, but if you saw the man for who and what he was, then things could turn out all right for you as happened with Penelope Kitson. She wisely never married him nor had a child by him and he left her well set after his death.

they "are the cause of so many havinng less" -- I dont agree at all. I used to work with the extremely rich and I can tell you that they work incredibly hard , are disciplined and are extremely demanding of themselves. They do not tolerate mediocrity in themselves and would be successful in anything they do. they happen to turn their attention and focus on making money - which is a skill. They also do not waste money and are very aware of every penny spent. They will pay for their children to have nice lives and they expect their children to excel in school and become professionals. The expect their children to work and support themselves. they do not waste their money on women, drugs etc ....

My cousin, an ardent environmentalist, went to see Getty about setting up a charitable prize late in Getty’s life. He told me it was a bizarre visit. At the end of the meeting he needed a taxi to leave. He was direct to a pay phone in the house to call for a taxi. So strange and miserly. But the Getty Prize was set up.
