The meaning of them referencing Mafia in the song is a direct connection to the game Mafia you play with a group of friends where if you get chosen as the Mafia, you basically lie and try to fool people thinking it's not you and try to get everyone else out and you win in the end. So the song is about them liking a boy and acting "like the Mafia" around him aka pretending they don't like him and try to fool him, until the very end where they reveal they liked him the whole time and win him over.
