I don't think IU has confirmed anything but many fans believe this song is a tribute to her friends who were Kpop idols who committed suicide in the last few years, the cartoon girl in the white dress represents Sulli and the lizard/dragon represents Jonghyun, there's also Hara but I'm not sure what represents her

This song makes me smile and cry at the same time, such a poetic song, such a fantastic collab! Forever we young!

The official explanation by IU is that the song is about growing up, turning 28, about leaving beautiful memories behind etc. However, many people have a theory that this song is dedicated to the friends IU lost, three idols that lost their life to suicide recently. Both the lyrics and MV can be interpreted that way. I totally get where people are coming from, but the topic of suicide is taboo in many Asian countries so it's no surprise that no "official " explanation would touch upon it. Personally, I got the sad vibe even before I read the lyrics, then I read them and teared up.

IU lost two of her closest friends both idols jonghyun and sulli thru su*cide .. iu fans says that the lizard or zalamander represents jonghyun since he likes salamander while the white girl ridin in it was sulli.. they are now soaring high in the sky.. and iu still meet them thru her memories.. when sulli was still alive a tv show MC asked her if what is her happiest moment?, Sulli responds : "I've never been happy" So IU asked her in this song IU: "so are you happy now? Finally happy now are you"

Most of the theories of this song consist of 3 of her close friends Sulli, Jonghyun and Goo Hara who unfortunately took their own lives. There were a lot of references of them for example sulli, I’m positive the girl in the white being “set free” in the animation is her because there was no mole on her cheek so it couldn’t of been IU and it reminded me of sulli. Also the m/v gave me sulli vibes but idk if that’s just me. Jonghyun loved charmander a lot and the dragon the girl was flying on could be Jonghyun, and a lot of people aren’t talking about this because iu was closer to Jonghyun and sulli but Hara’s nickname was Iguana (I’m pretty sure). The name of the song, eight, 8, if you put 8 sideways you get ♾ which is the infinity symbol, all of her friends are gonna be with her and in her memories forever. First time I listened to this song I was multitasking but when I looked up at the music video I saw iu’s animation crying and smiling and then I saw the girl in the white and immediately I thought of sulli. When I searched up the lyrics after hearing “So are you happy now” I immediately started crying and I couldn’t stop. Ig that’s when it hit me that all these idols that we only knew on camera had a much deeper relationship with their peers and friends and if it affected us fans so much, I can’t imagine how much it affects friends of those lost. Anyways this song was so beautiful and I hope IU, Yoongi, Sulli, Jonghyun and Hara are all happy now.

at the end of the mv, where the words repeat “so are you happy now? finally happy now?” iu looks happy as she got to relive her memories. but then she looks cold as she looks into the camera. as if she’s looking at us, the audience. asking us, “so are you happy with what you’ve done? pushing people to the edge where they had to make that horrible decision?”

Yoongi raps then sings a little bit is 😘😍. This song is beautiful. It’s such a bittersweet song. Love both of them.

This MV and song is so special and I cried so much when I found out the meaning, her tribute to Jonghyun, Sulli and Hara. The lizard represents Jonghyun and the girl in white could represent Sulli and Hara. In her memories, they will forever be happy and they don't need to worry about parting. When the girl in white jumped off the cliff, the dragon was there to catch her and they went to heaven together, they are not alone anymore while IU smiles happy/sad in the airplane. I listened to SHINee since debut, same with f(x) and KARA these groups helped spread the Hallyu wave in North America so their all very special to me and when I found out one by one what happened to them because of hurtful online comments and negativity it broke my heart because I still see that repeating pattern happen every day whether between fans, celebrities and youtubers channels. Yoongi and BTS, in general, have really become the voice to fight back against online hatred and speak up for those without voices to stop the anger. On IU TV, IU said the title "eight" is because she's 28 years old (just like her past songs 23, and palette). And the cameraman asked her what's the story of this MV, and IU never tell the story instead she told us to watch the MV so we know what story of this music. But, i feel it's really clear that this MV tributed for her friends.

I'm convinced that Yoongi is the Lizard 😂 for me the lyrics reminded me of people IU had contact with like Jonghyun, Sulli that...you know. It's like she's talking about them, that she'll never forget them and they'll always be in her memory. That she'll always remember the great times she had with them and that she's happy to have such good memories with them. But the song also strikes me as one you think about when you get sad that you aren't a child anymore. It's like she's longing to be a child again, the dragon and crazy adventure represents the seemingly nonexistent boundaries, creativity you have as a child and the freedom. She's looking back at those times with a smile and says that she'll never forget that feeling. That's how interpret the song in both ways. It's an absolutely gorgeous and I find myself slipping a tear whenever I listen to it

This music video has many interpretations I think the white dress woman is IU because she wears the same dress as IU at 8:40 and her mole is the same as IU's. I watched the music video first as well and it sounded happy and relaxing but after reading through the lyrics, i got this huge lump in my throat and felt so melancholic knowing what the meaning of the song was. Actually iguana was nickname for hara, and peach was also nickname for sulli. you can find it peach lamp near sofa in this music video. in her dream, a girl who wear white dress is sulli and dragon is hara, who changed her body iguana to dragon like poketmon .. so when they saw each other across by window of the airplane, IU saw her dead friends arw now get together freely going to the heaven.. and she smiled with tears..😢 .

Someone else mentioned this but I thought it was really fitting but he basically said Yoongi is a really emotional rapper who always brings that aspect into his songs. This duo was magical together and I love seeing when the boys get a chance to work with other artists because we get to see different sides to their music. the place where she is asks her if she wants to save her all memories, and she chooses yes, so we she her memories overtime as they are saved the theory behind the music video is that the lizard at the vey start is her friends waching over her. then each of her friends gets their own character in the mv, Sulli is the first represented in the mv. the house which iu is in is a 2 story country house which is where sulli was sadly last found and is where iu and sulli used to hang out together. they begin to fly on an aeroplane and the thunder storm represents the chaos of loosing someone without being able to control anything (if you look closely the lizard disappears) iu wakes up and see it isnt just a nightmare she is gone she goes outside and sees a girl in white which is Sulli happy in heaven. then next show is Jonghun who is a dragon with wings as his nickname is 'charmander' (the pokemon) and so is a dragon. it is also thought that one of the lizards is Goo Hara as her nickname is 'iguana'. it is sad that they are all gone but through this song we all get closure being able to see a happy side this song give iu closure being able to say good bye to her friends. As IU wakes up you hear the lyrics "are you happy no. finally happy now" echoed in the background. it contrasts the start where she asks her friends if they are happy without pain anymore, instead she looks angry as she asks the haters if they are happy with the outcome.
