Iván Fischer is the founder and Music Director of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. VPRO Vrije Geluiden travelled to Iván Fischer's hometown Budapest. He was in the middle of recording the 7th symphony, composed by Gustav Mahler. A eclectic piece and a challenge for most conductors.
We follow Fischer during the recordings and also to important places of his youth. Fischer lived across the street from the Hungarian Operahouse. The same operahouse where Gustav Mahler was artistic director in 1888. We also take a look at Iván Fischer as composer.
A documentary by Odette Toeset and Melchior Huurdeman.
This video was recorded for VPRO Vrije Geluiden: music program made by the Dutch public broadcast organization VPRO

Is the less performed of his symphonies! Such a shame, it's a very interesting piece, very magical seems to me.

Very cool. I never loved the 7th, but I must dig into it a bit more now. Great doco!

Fascinating. A great musician and human being. I always appreciate the self-effacing manner in which Melchior Huurdeman conducts interviews: his unobtrusiveness allows us to get really close to his subjects.

I don't know where Fischer gets this story about Maher's "crazy walk" being echoed in the opening rhythm, it's a very strange story. As I recall, the rhythm is attributed to Mahler taking a boat ride on a nocturnal lake near his vacation house. Makes a lot more sense than people contorting themselves to accompany the composer on a walk.

I sat at the empty concert hall at that event when Fischer and BFO recorded the last movement. It was one of my greatest musical experience. They played the movement 3 times. It is interesting that as far as I know they recorded this symphony years ago already. So they recorded two times but Channel Classics never issued any of them.

Interesting that he switches between Hungarian and English during the rehearsal, seemingly at random. Does the orchestra have a large amount of non-Hungarians?

The oboists are most of the time foreigners, maybe he invited other musicians for the recording, but most of the regular players of the orchestra are Hungarians.

There is Dr Sigmun Freud's testemony of general psycho-phisycal condition of Gustav Mahler and he said in that medical document that he has problem with right leg wich he dragged while walking and we can today say that this is authentic testimony regarding Dr Freud's reputation.

I saw Mr. Fischer conducting Die Berliner with Mahler's 3rd. It was a BIG disappointment. Mr. Fischer seemed to ignore all of Gustav Mahler's tempi recommendations. It was nearly as bad as Bernstein's performance with Die Wiener. So, he doesn't seem to be first choice for Mahler's symphonies. I prefer Mehta, Jansons, Haitink and even Eschenbach.

Fischer can have some ups and downs, but his ups are VERY good. For example, his Mahler 3rd with Budapest was stupendous. For Bernstein, his first Mahler 7 was better than the Vienna as it revealed what the piece was about. Also, Fischer’s tempi is probably just his interpretation or how he views it. Just my opinion
