Gotta love these old tennis broadcasts. You always had to guess the score, or if you were lucky you could see it on the board in the background.

Ummmm not quite. I'll give him 9.5 and Mac 10.0 Stefan did however have a bit more power and a couple years on John so as he got into the tour after a few years he pretty much owned John but they were always fantastic matches to watch. And don't forget: Mac #1 in singles AND Dubs. Yeah that.

Love watching these old matches. Hell, it's been so long that I didn't even remember who won, so the suspense was there :). Strong work by Edberg here, just a kid facing the #1 player in the world. And respect to Lendl too - he was an incredible competitor who didn't get the love he deserved at the time.

At least two things from this vid is different from today: 1) AU Open was played on grass - not sure why they changed to hardcourt? 2) Swedes were actually good at tennis back then!

When considering Lendl's Grand Slam titles, one should know that the Australian Open was played on grass (by far Lendl's weakest surface) until 1988, when he was 28 years old...

Great era (second only to Roger/Rafa/Novak)… Lendl was the start of the new power hitting game, the father of modern tennis. Edberg had the most beautiful and effective volleys, the greatest serve and volley ever.

@@redd605McEnroe played it a couple of times on grass (83, 85) but never did well. The grass courts at the Australian Open were weird. Slower than Wimbledon with a weird bounce, the courts were also built on a slope to assist drainage, which meant you were hitting the ball uphill from one end, downhill from the other. It was said that it really disturbed a lot of good servers. Might be one of the reasons why Boris Becker never did well on the grass there either.

I do not think so, but you cannot argue about people's taste. Pure serve and volley matches with just a few strokes per rallye could have been rather boring, especially with big servers like Ivanisevic, Krajicek, Sampras, etc. It was literally just a serve and not much more. The contrast of styles made it interesting though with serve and volleyers against baseliners/counter punchers.
