Great podcast! I've had a similar but opposing problem with vets where I took my 8 month old pup in for treatment for a eye infection from a cat scratch, I booked the appropriate time of day, he was fed and rested and worn out after a play session - nice and calm. Then the vet greeted him in the room by getting him with a high pitched voice, pets and excitement which got the pup excited and she was unable to get a good look at the eye and made it out that it was the dogs fault. Not saying that her job wouldve been any easier without the excitement because he was in a lot of pain, but I was very disappointed. I would expect a vet to know not to get a dog into play-Mode when doing an examination, especially as something as delicate and invasive as the eye

Awesome opinion from a very knowledgeable & realistic vet! I’m here in PA too & so glad he called out Greenfield puppy mills Lancaster PA! I’m a volunteer MAD rescue & we’re seeing an influx of these dogs with bad genetics; missing ears, aggression, etc. It would be amazing if you could do a PSA/FB post/ podcast to dissuade people from getting Malinois/Dutchies & other working breeds unless people have researched them & are willing to put the time & commitment they require. The shelters & rescues are so overwhelmed with these gorgeous animals because people see movies & videos & think they’re cool. I have an IGP Malinois- I know the time it takes. Please share your influence to educate more people that these dogs are not for everyone. Appreciate your consideration 🐾

Excellent podcast, Ivan! I would urge you to get Dr. Michelle Kutzler on the podcast. She is one of the leading veterinary surgical teachers in the United States, who has openly stated that neuters and spays are in fact “harmful” to our pets and had a goal of teaching hormone sparing techniques. I think this topic would be perfect for your podcast and for those of us serious pet owners, one worth diving into.

Great point by the vet. Many successful dog trainers have a skewed view of dog owners not realizing the vast majority who need help the most would never even consider hiring a trainer and don’t even realize they need help.

'Playing vets' was a great game to play when we had a senior and a puppy. Really good for the pup to wait its turn and senior dog could show the behaviour first- checking teeth, looking in ears, etc. nice activity for a rainy day and low impact for an oldie. Miss my old boy just remembering it. Always a legend at the vets. Great podcast as always Ivan- thank you.

So simple, let the owner calm down and don’t approach the dog incorrectly yet I see so many vets do the opposite it’s really ridiculous.

In Germany it is against the law to castrate or de-sex a dog. You would need a valid medical reason for doing so.

Very interesting to get the POV of a vet. If he comes back on again, please can you ask him what he thinks about the whole idea of spaying and neutering in the first place. Maybe have an idea of why we alter the natural state of the animal in the first place. I have read that there is no real impact on the number of unplanned litters (primary reason for spay/neuter) where there are spayed or non-spayed animals. I would love to know more about that and the nexus of why we alter the animals chemistry in the first place if there is not an evident impact on unplanned litters. Again, I am not sure of the data, it is something I have come across numberous times.

Can dogs on kibble be overeating because they are not getting what they need from that garbage? My dog on a raw diet self regulates and is never overweight.

This was so good ❤ keep up the good work. 1:06:44 is my experience of dairy cow (15 years) saying that if i try to get a cow to stop producing milk, i start with stop give pellets (high energy feed) and give her hay instead of high energy alfalfa and milk her intermittent schedule like once every 24 hours for a few days and then less and less and then stop all together. But i am not super experienced of this specific thing. But search out info from highly educated people from dairy cow industry.
