Hi Isabel, I’m a 64 year-old grandmother and I just wanted to give you a tip that I learned from my grandmother. We used to make pomegranate jelly. It is the best jelly. If you take a large pot or bowl and fill it with water crack, open your pomegranates and take out the seeds underwater the seeds sink and everything else floats, and then your hands don’t get stained. Your channel is the best. Love, Cheryl.

I’ve got a fridge drawer full of pomegranates that I grew, and a freezer shelf full of them that my niece grew. Thanks for the tip about the jelly. One of my favorite ways to use them, is just to eat them. I’ll sit near our two pomegranate trees, under the pergola, open them with my thumbnails, picking out and eating the arils one-by-one, marveling at the geometry of the fruit, then tossing the bits I don’t eat (peel & pith) back to the trees, to nourish the next growing season. The variety of pomegranates we have, is called Utah Sweet, the fruit color is very pale - almost white; the skin varies from a greenish-yellow to pinkish-yellow, never turning red, like what we’d find in a store. Cheers! 😊

One thing to consider, is living in an Intentional Community. Years ago, “commune” was the operative word, though there are reasons why that’s a less-than-ideal word sometimes. The point is, all over the world, there are people who chose to live near one another, bartering skills and wares with each other, taking care of others via our strengths and letting them care for us with theirs. For some of us, that might simply mean as a multi-generational household; for others, maybe more like a small village or town. It can be done; it isn’t always fun. Sometimes, necessity invents such community, and we must learn to adapt to “society” vs “living in our own cave”. There is a season for everything. A time to be alone and times not to be. You’re finding your way - Paths don’t have to be straight lines from A to B. It’s OK to be on the long and winding road. Cheers! 😊

Isabel, what about Hannah, Raquel, and Hitomi? I've enjoyed all those friendships you've had. I loved going on that vicarious trip to Florida when you and Hannah danced on the sand and went kayaking down the river. And you and Raquel climbing up the mountain in the spring flowers, and how nicely you sang together. You and Hitomi scared me as you hiked that steep cliffside in Switzerland but always kept a happy spirit in the rain.

I also feel like I haven’t had close friends in years (I have been very isolated because of health problems). So I can relate to what you say. Loneliness can be really hard to deal with. I try to focus on the people I do have around me and remember that loneliness is a feeling that passes and also that you can make new friends in any stage in life. I also notice that a lot of people struggle with it these days. Especially people in their twenties like us. I hope this can make you feel a bit less alone ❤ you’re video’s have helped me a lot during times of isolation.

I haven't had close friends in a long time too. My best friend committed suicide and my next closest friend lives very far away, so I totally feel what she's saying too. Honestly, hearing it from Isabel made me start crying, and reading and talking about it here has made me feel a bit better. I'm reminded to cherish my children and mother, who are around me, and to remember that we're never really alone. You guys are all strangers but still I feel like we're all Isabel's friends when I come here. I thank her for that! Thank you Isabel! ❤

I think a pretty typical part of aging is losing a certain number of friends. I went from having a fairly large group of friends that I saw on a very regular basis, to only having 1 that I see on any kind of regular basis, 1 that I get to see occasionally but speak to quite often, and 1 that I rarely see but speak to frequently. I had the same feelings of being left out when I'd see the people in my old friend group continuing to hang out, go on trips, having dinners together, go camping together, etc. It took me several years to realize, and be OK with the fact, that we've grown apart so much because our lives are significantly different, and our interests no longer align. I'm OK with it now. I love the close friends I have, even if I don't actually see them much. It's absolutely quality over quantity. I feel happier than I have in a long time after coming to that realization. I really love the type of life you're living, but without a doubt, it's pretty isolating. You are so blessed to have a close and loving family, and a wonderful, supportive partner in Logan, but I do hope you find peace within your other relationships.

@@amadamiaaa We are the ones who decide what our priorities are. I live alone I do it all, inside, out side, one of the things I do is make my own bread it is one of the easiest things you can possibly make. I don't like bread that's bought, it just something I do like making my meals from scratch, you are what you eat. I like to know what I am eating. I make 2 or 3 batches at a time split the loves freeze them, bought bread is so expensive you could buy a bag of flour for what you paid for three loves of bread. I am thrifty don't believe in wasting money that could be put to better use. We can do what ever we put our minds to, I am not one to make excuses. The one thing about living alone you can't make excuses because if you don't do it it doesn't get done, one thing for shore you don't have time to make excuses you get it done feel good about yourself after. We were given life to live I enjoy living it doing what needs to be done.

I think making friends can be really hard when we are not following very constant routines that make us be around others all the time... In germany we have a recepy thats very similar to your bread pudding! We call it Arme Ritter or Rostige Ritter. My grandma used to do this when I was a child, since it was so easy to make. You basically take left over bread (either soft or hard - when its hard its more delicious tho) and let it sink in a mixture with eggs and milk until it gets soggy. Depending how hard the bread is it takes longer. After that you put them into a frying pan, wait until they're golden brown, dunk them into cinnamon and sugar and its ready to eat. Its so simple, but so delicious and it reminds me of my childhood everytime my grandma makes it for me! :)

I know your wedding will be so beautiful. I get what you say about not having friends! My friendships have dwindled as I’ve changed as a person- and struggling to find people who I have anything real in common with as an adult is pretty tough. I can’t stand drama and small talk, but everyone seems to only want to bond on negative things. No one is deep and lighthearted and curious. I want deep conversations, and not many people can offer that. I want people who are connected to themselves and to life. So so hard to find.

I understand the loneliness you were describing, i dont have friends or a community, most people have become so distant from each other or new ideas, i miss my mom and grandma so much, i sew all the time as well as bake, i do have a small spot of land but no where to walk so i make due with what blessings i do have, you inspire me to believe the younger generation i observe is still in tough with nature and the simpler ways to live

Awww- sorry you feel so isolated from people.... You do have friends! But I know internet subscribers are not the same thing as in person. I hope it is some small comfort knowing that many who enjoy and appreciate your videos really do care about you personally. I love it when you cook over a fire outside- or in the ground, like in this video- it's so cool! The rustic, comforting vibe of your videos always makes me feel so happy and peaceful. Seriously, of all the videos I watch on the internet- yours are, hands down, the best/ my favorite. And coming from the entertainment industry where I have had many production/ behind the scenes jobs, I truly appreciate all the effort that goes into creating what looks like an effortlessly beautiful documentary. I sincerely hope you can find a way to fulfill that desire for more genuine human interaction. Best to you!!!! 🙂

Hi Isabel, in Argentina we call the bread pudding "Budín de pan" but here's the twist, which you can maybe try next time: let the bread soak for longer and maybe give it a whisk before cooking.... some people even use their mixers/blenders for a lighter texture, so it feels more like a pudding and you cant even tell it's bread 🥰 Hope you can try it! xo

Your food always looks so nice. Like the ingredients are just right, which makes the presentation very appealing. If you ever give up on KZfaq or look to change your content, I can envision a successful “Isabel’s Vintage Bakery” in a small town. Put in a few wood stove ovens, hold cooking workshops and even have a garden area to do your open air and in-ground dishes. You would have people flocking in from miles around. ♥️✌🏼🙂

I really resonate with what you're saying about community - I make KZfaq videos in a similar spirit as you and after a year of full time traveling across the continent and now making my first tiny home out in the middle of nowhere... it has been amazing AND the not-so-obvious trade off is a closer community. Then again I think that it's not just where we live but also a societal and cultural issue where we've really sort of forgotten how to build and sustain community in the ways that a lot of us crave. Anyway, thank you for sharing your stories and thoughts with us - sending love from my little corner of the world to yours 💛💛💛

Isabelle, I just finished a 3 hour cooking spell on chocolate shortbread biscuits. I’m an old guy and boys did not do cooking in the 1970’s, we had woodwork and metalwork, consequently I struggle even with basic terms. eg half a cup of shortening? But so far they have worked and some of my children want more. Good luck with the baking, it brings me pleasure and I can imagine my late wife helping. Social media appears to be just destructive garbage, maybe I’m just not social enough. Even though we have this stuff called media, we are moving further apart and lonliness is epidemic. It doesn’t matter where we travel most people just stare at their phones. Is that how to live? Good luck, thanks for your story.

She does not live far away from people. A few thousand people live in the valley she lives in. She has four neighbors a stones throw away from her “cottage” (she drives past four houses from the road to her house). Watch some of her dip in the river clips, you can see the house on the other side of the river. There’s a house just past her house. She’s also NOT an hour from a grocery store. There is a convenience store with food less than 2 miles away, a full grocery store in the town 11 miles away and a medium city about 30 miles (45 minutes) away. How do I know? I’ve lived in that exact area, drove the road that parallels that river, shopped in the same stores, had coffee at several local shops, etc.

Every time I watch your videos, I get inspired to cook something new! My fiance and I moved into a bus about 2 years ago. The loneliness you discuss in your video is very relatable. Living away from society and living an off grid lifestyle is truly one of the most challenging things I've ever done. Watching your videos makes me feel less alone and I thank you for that. As we prepare to move deeper into the woods, I plan on continuing to watch your content and learning from the best. Thank you for the inspiration and the yummy recipe ideas!

Thank you so much for your vulnerability and honesty! I think the majority of people can relate to everything you said. When we're kids, we intuitively seek connection. We love without reserve, and friendships are born easily. As we get older, we get hardened by experience and retreat to the safe and known people and routines in our life. I've had those moments myself, wondering where all the friends went...where all the real connections went...and how do we get them back in a way that doesn't seem awkward and forced? I appreciate knowing I'm not alone in that! I love your videos and appreciate all the warmth you put out into the world!
